Dominion

In the Bible, "dominion" refers to the authority and stewardship granted by God, particularly over creation. The concept is most notably introduced in Genesis 1:26-28, where God creates humanity in His image and commands them to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth." Here, dominion implies a responsibility to govern and manage the earth in a way that reflects God's character and intentions, emphasizing stewardship rather than exploitation. The term also appears in other contexts, such as Psalm 8:6, which states, "You have given him dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet." This reinforces the idea that dominion is a divinely ordained role that includes care and responsibility for creation. In the New Testament, dominion can be seen in a spiritual sense as well, where believers are called to exercise authority in Christ and live righteously (Matthew 28:18-20). Overall, biblical dominion encompasses both authority and responsibility, underscoring the relationship between humanity, God, and the created order.
