Defilement

1 sermons

In the Bible, defilement refers to a state of moral or ceremonial impurity that renders a person, object, or place unacceptable for divine service or community life. The concept is often tied to the laws of cleanliness and holiness outlined in the Torah, particularly in books like Leviticus. For instance, Leviticus 11 addresses dietary laws that define clean and unclean animals, while Leviticus 15 details various bodily discharges that lead to ritual impurity. In this context, defilement can be understood as a barrier to one's relationship with God, as seen in Isaiah 64:6, where the prophet states that "all our righteous acts are like filthy rags," highlighting the pervasive nature of sin and its defiling effects.Furthermore, defilement also carries a moral dimension in biblical texts. Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament challenge traditional notions of ritual purity by emphasizing inner purity over external observance. In Mark 7:15, He declares, "Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them," indicating that moral defilement stems from the heart and one's actions rather than mere physical or ceremonial impurities. This shift points to a deeper understanding of holiness and the need for transformation from within, central to the teachings of Christ.
