For a description of the Praefect as ὁ τοῦ νομοῦ βοηθός , helper of the district, see P Giss I. 46 .11 (time of Hadrian) ἀξιοῦμέν σε τὸν τοῦ νομοῦ βοηθὸν διακοῦσαι ἡμῶν , and cf. P Oxy III. 488 .23 (ii/iii A.D.) προσφεύγω σοι τῶι κυρίῳ καὶ πάντων βοηθῷ . For the word in its widest connotation it is sufficient to cite P Oxy IV. 743 .20 (B.C. 2) εἰ καὶ π [ρ ]ὸς ἄλλους εἶχον πρᾶγμα , βοηθὸν αὐτοῦ γ [ε ]νέσθαι διὰ ἣν ἔχομ̣ε̣(ν ) πρὸς ἑατοὺς φιλίαν , for although I (?) have had trouble with others you must assist him for the sake of our friendship (Edd.), and P Lond 410 .8 ( c.
