to rub to rub something under pressure to make it smaller By rubbing the heads of wheat, the disciples were able to remove the chaff and the so-called ‘beards,’ the stiff projections arising from each kernel. This process would be equivalent to threshing and would thus be condemned by the Pharisees as work on the Sabbath.

The fact that up till now ψώχω is attested only in Lk 61, and (in the middle) in Nicander 7heriaca, 610, cannot be stressed for Luke’s medical knowledge, but is rather a mere statistical accident: see Cadbury 7.81. xlv. (1926), p. 199.
