Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἀξιόω [page 51] ἀξιόω is very common in legal documents = claim, e.g. P Oxy I. 37 i. 21 (A.D. 49) (= Selections , p. 50) ἀξιῶι ταῦ [τα ] φυλαχθῆ [ν ]αι , I demand that these (documents) be preserved (in the record), ib. II. 237 vi. 14 (A.D. 186) ἀξιῶν τότε ἃ προσήνεγκα α̣ὐτῇ ἀνακομίσασθαι , claiming to recover what I had made over to her. It also frequently occurs in the weakened sense request, ask, as P Eleph 19 .18 (iii/B.C.) ἀξιῶ σε ἀνακαλέσασθαι Μίλωνα , P Par 49 .10 ff. (B.C. 164 58) (= Witkowski .2 , p. 70) τοῦ δὲ ἀδελφοῦ σου συμπεσόντος μοι . . . καὶ ἀξιώσαντός με , P. Oxy IV. 805 (B.C. 25) ἀξιῶ δὲ ἀντιφωνεῖν [μ ]οι πυκνότερον , P Giss I. 20 .23 (ii/A.D.) ἀξιώσεις οὖν δίστιχον αὐτῶι γ̣ραφῆναι (can this mean you will arrange that . . . ?). For ἀξιόω of prayer (as LXX Jer_7:16 ; Jer_11:14 ) cf. P Par 51 .22 (a dream from the Serapeum, B.C. 160) (= Selections , p. 20) ἠξίωκα τὸν Σάραπιν καὶ τὴν Ἶσιν λέγων· Ἐλθέ μοι , θεὰ θεῶν κτλ ., and Syll 816 .1 (ii/i B.C.) ἐπικαλοῦμαι καὶ ἀξιῶ τὸν θεὸν τὸν ὕψιστον . . . ἐπὶ τοὺς δόλωι φονεύσαντας κτλ . (See Deissmann LAE p. 423 ff.) The verb occurs in OGIS 201 .7 (the Silco inscription, vi/A.D.) αὐτοὶ ἠξίωσάν με , where Dittenberger renders, dignitatem meam regiam agnoverunt. For a similar use of the noun ἀξίωμα , see P Tebt I. 33 .4 (B.C. 112) (= Selections , p. 30) ἐν μίζονι ἀξιώματι κα [ὶ ] τιμῆι . For the LXX usage of ἀξίωμα = request, petition ( Est_3:5-8 ; Est_7:2 f. etc.), Deissmann ( BS p. 92 f.) refers to the confirmation afforded by the inscriptions, e.g. Syll 303 .6 (before B.C. 146) περὶ ἧς (χώρας ) ἐπιδοὺς ἀξίωμα βασιλεὺς Θρᾳκῶν Κότ [υς ] . . . ᾔτει τ [ὴν π ]άτριον ἡμῶν χώραν . Frδnkel on Perg I. 13 .1 (iii/B.C.) describes it as very rare : see his exx.
