Commentators cite Dio Cass. lxvi. p. 1094 τῶν ἐν μέσῳ κραυρουμένων ( being parched ) καὶ τεφρουμένων ( being overwhelmed with ashes ) a description of an eruption of Vesuvius, and Lycophron Cass . 227 τεφρώσας γυῖα Λημναίῳ πυρί . The adj. τεφρός , ash-coloured, is used of a bird in PSI VI. 569 .6 (B.C. 253 2) ἄλλος ( sc . ὄρνις ) ἄρσην τεφρὸς ὀξυ [ωπής , cited by Preisigke Wφrterb. s.v .
