D., under the word , under the end; Gardthausen, Palaeogr., p. 27): Rev_5:1; λῦσαι τάς σφραγας, ibid. (Rec.); ἀνοῖξαι, ibid. (5 G L T Tr WH), ; . b. a signet-ring: Rev_7:2. c. the inscription or impression made by a seal: Rev_9:4 (the name of God and Christ stamped upon their foreheads must be meant here, as is evident from ); 2Ti_2:19. d. that by which anything is confirmed, proved, authenticated, as by a seal (a token or proof): Rom_4:11; 1Co_9:2. σφραγίς [page 618] a seal : cf. P Oxy I. 113 .23 (ii/A.D.) ἐρωτηθεὶς ἀγ [ό ]ρασόν μοι σφραγ (ῖδα ) ἀργυροῦν , I beg you to bring me a silver seal (Edd.), ib . I. 117 .15 (ii/iii A.D.) ῥάκη δύο κατασεσημημμένα [τ ]ῇ σφραγεῖδί μου , two strips of cloth sealed with my seal. In ib . XVI. 1886 .6 (v/vi A.D.) τοῦτο π [αραδοὺ ]ς ἐδεξάμην τὴν αὐτοῦ σφρ̣α̣γ̣ι̣̑ [δα , the editors understand the word as = either a signet-ring or a bond. For the use of σφραγίς to denote the impression of a seal for attesting or closing, cf. P Oxy I. 106 .22 (A.D. 135) where a certain Ptolema acknowledges the receipt of a Will ἐπὶ τῶν αὐτῶν σφραγείδων , with the seals intact (Edd.), which she had deposited ἑπὶ σφραγίδων , under seals in the archives, and now wished to revoke, and P Fay 122 .8 ( c . A.D. 100) τὰς δὲ λοιπὰς ὑπὸ τὴν ἀμφοτέρ [ω ]ν σφραγεῖδα ἐάσας , leaving the remaining (artabae of mustard) under the seal of you both. See also Ev. Petr. 8 ἐπέχρισαν ἑπτὰ σφραγῖδας (as in Rev_5:1 ).
