It takes the dative after it, and denotes accompaniment and fellowship, wheter of action, or of belief, or of condition and experience; (according to the grammarians (cf. Donaldson, New Crat. § 181; Krüger, § 68,13,1; Kühner, ii, p. 438); Winer's Grammar, 391 (366), a fellowship far closer and more intimate than that expressed by μετά although in the N. The preposition occasionally passes into what is almost an instrumental sense, as in P Par 12 17 (B.C. 157) σὺν τοῖς θεοῖς καὶ τῇ σῇ τύχῃ ἐκ θανάτου σέσωμαι . See also P Tebt I. 20 5 (B.C. 113) χαριεῖ σὺν σοὶ αὐτὸν εἰσαγαγών , you will do me a favour by personally introducing him (Edd.) (cf. 1Co_15:10 ). (4) Σύν = in fellowship with, as a technical term in magic ritual, appears in such passages as P Par 574 2999 ( c. A.D. 300) λαμβάνω σε σὺν ἀγαθῆ Τύχη καὶ ἀγαθῶ Δαίμονι , and the cursing leaden tablet of iii/B.C. CIA Append. (= IG III. iii.) 108 δήσω ἐγὼ κείνην . . . σύν θ᾽ Ἑκάτ (η )ι χθονίαι καὶ Ἐρινύσιν both cited by Deissmann LAE 2 , pp. 255, 303. For the NT formula σὺν Χριστῷ we must again refer to Deissmann, who in his monograph Die neutestament-liche Fortmel in Ckristo Jesu (Marburg, 1892) has shown that σὺν Χριστῷ nearly always means the fellowship of the faithful with Christ after their death or after His coming. In this connexion he adduces elsewhere (see LAE 2 p. 303 n. 1 ) a striking parallel to Php_1:23 in a graffito from Alexandria, probably of the Imperial period, where a deceased person is addressed in the words εὔχομαι κἀγὼ ἐν τάχυ σὺν σοὶ εἷναι , I would that I were soon in fellowship with thee. (5) For σύν c. gen. cf. Ostr 240 .5 (A.D. 159) σὺν Μηνοφίλου , and P Lond 113. 4 .19 (A.D. 595) (= I. p. 209) σὺν μισθοῦ ὅλου . (6) For the pleonastic καί after μετά in Php_4:3 (cf. Deissmann BS p. 265 f.) we can now compare σὺν καί in PAS iii. 612 (Phrygia Imperial) σὺν καὶ τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς (cited by Hatch, JBL xxvii. (1908), p. 143).

Verb, as κτείνω, σύν may refer to two things, "to kill one person as well as another", or, "to join with another in killing." of the completion of an action, "altogether, completely", as in συμπληρόω, συντέμνω. joined with numerals, σύνδυο "two together or by twos, two and two"; so σύντρεις, σύμπεντε, etc., like Lat. bini, terni, etc. συν- before β μ π φ ψ, becomes συμ-; before γ κ ξ χ, συγ-; before λ, συλ-; before ς, συσ-, but before στ, συ-, as συστῆναι.

σύν (old Att. ξύν), prep. with dative, expressing association, fellowship and inclusion. It gradually gave way to μετά, with genitive (cf. LS, see word; Bl., §41, 3), and is therefore comparatively infrequent in NT, being rare in Mat.4, Mrk.6, Jhn.3, and elsewhere (exx. Jas.1:11, 2Pe.1:18) only in Lk (Gosp. and Ac) and Paul. With, together with: of companionship and association, Luk.2:13, Jhn.21:3, Act.10:23, al.; εἶναι σύν τινι, Luk.7:12, Act.4:13, Php.1:23, al.; of partisanship, Act.4:13; οἱ σύν τινι, of attendants, companions or colleagues, Mrk.2:26, Luk.5:9, Act.5:17, al.; of assistance, ἡ χάρις τ. θεοῦ σὺν ἐμοί, 1Co.15:10; of two or more things together, almost = καί, Luk.23:11, Act.3:4 10:2 14:5 23:25, Eph.3:18; σὺν Χριστῷ ζῆν, 2Co.13:4; besides (FlJ, LXX), σὺν πᾶσι τούτοις, Luk.24:21.
