iron ( Rev_18:12 ) : P Cairo Zen II. 59144 .10 (B.C. 256) τῶν ι― τα (λάντων ) τ̣[οῦ σιδήρ ]ου , ten talents of iron, P Petr II. 13(1) .10 (B.C. 258 253) τὸν σίδηρον ἐνέχυρα θήσουσιν , they will put their iron (tools) in pledge (Ed.), and P Oxy I. 84 .14 (A.D. 316) payment ὑπὲρ τιμῆς σιδή [ρο ]υ ἐνεργοῦ , for the price of wrought iron. This last document shows us also σιδηροχαλκεύς , and P Lond 121 .356 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 95) σιδηρόψυχος , both adjectives new to the lexicons. A.D. 350) (= II. p. 318), where directions are given to arrest a man and σιδηρῶσαι αὐτόν , put him in irons, on a charge of selling stolen camels. MGr σίδερο .

σίδηρος σίδηρος, doric σίδα_ρος, ὁ, "iron", Lat. ferrum, Hom. , etc.: iron was the last of the metals brought into common use by the Greeks: hence it is πολύκμητος, "wrought with much toil", Hom. : and was of high value, pieces of it being given as prizes, Il. It mostly came from the north and east of the Euxine, Σκύθης ς. Aesch. like Lat. ferrum, anything made of iron, an iron tool or "weapon, a sword or knife, an axe-head", etc., Hom. , etc. "a place for selling iron, a smithy, a cutler's shop", Xen.
