ὄψιμος, ὄψιμον (ὀψέ), late, latter (Homer, Iliad 2, 325; ὀψιμωτατος σπόρος, Xenophon, oec. 17, 4f; ἐν τοῖς ὀψιμοις τῶν ὑδάτων, of the time of subsidence of the waters of the Nile, Diodorus 1, 10; (cf. Lob. ad Phryn., p. 51f)): ὄψιμον ὑετόν, the latter or vernal rain, which falls chiefly in the months of March and April just before the harvest (opposed to the autumnal or πρώϊμος (cf. B. D. under the word )), Jas_5:7 (but L T Tr WH omit ὑετόν, the Sinaiticus manuscript and a few other authorities substitute καρπόν); the Sept. for ξΗμΐχεωΡ, Deu_11:14; Jer_5:24; Hos_6:3; Joe_2:23; Zec_10:1.

late, as in Jas_5:7 (cf. Exo_9:32 : also Xen, Oec. xvii. 4), occurs in PSI IV. 433 .2 (B.C. 261 0) τὰ μὲν οὖν παρ᾽ ἐμοὶ ὄψιμα ὄντα ὑπάρξει εἰς φυτείαν . For the comparative cf. P Flor II. 134 *.9 (A.D. 260) ὁ καιρὸς νῦν ἐστιν ὀψιμώτερος , the season is now rather late, similarly P Fay 133 .9 (iv/A.D.), and for the adverb cf. P Tebt I. 72 .361 (B.C. 114 3) διὰ τ [ὸ ] ὀψίμως σπαρῆν [αι , and P Oxy III. 474 .24 (A.D. 184 ?) οὐδέν ἐστιν τὸ καλούμενον ὀψίμως ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ περιγεγραμμένον .
