οὗτος, αὕτη, τοῦτο, demonstrative pronoun (cf. Curtius, p. 543), Hebrew ζΖδ, ζΙΰϊ, this; used:
I. absolutely.
1.
a. this one, visibly present here: Mat_3:17; Mat_17:5; Mar_9:7; Luk_7:44; Luk_9:35; 2Pe_1:17. Mat_9:3; Mat_21:38; Mar_14:69; Luk_2:34; Luk_23:2; Joh_1:15; Joh_1:30; Joh_7:25; John 9:8 f, 19 ; Joh_18:21; Joh_18:30; Joh_21:21; Act_2:15; Act_4:10; Act_9:21; according to the nature and character of the person or thing mentioned, it is used with a suggestion either of contempt, as Mat_13:55; Mar_6:2; Luk_5:21; Luk_7:39; Luk_7:49; Joh_6:42; Joh_6:52; Joh_7:15; or of admiration, Mat_21:11; Act_9:21; cf. Wahl, Clavis apocryphor. V. T., p. 370.
b. it refers to a subject immediately preceding, the one just named: Luk_1:32; Luk_2:37 (R G L); Joh_1:2; Joh_6:71; 2Ti_3:6; 2Ti_3:8, etc.; at the beginning of a narrative about one already mentioned, Mat_3:3; Luk_16:1; Joh_1:41 (); ; Act_7:19; Act_21:24. this one just mentioned and no other: Joh_9:9; Act_4:10 (ἐν τούτῳ); ; 1Jn_5:6; such as I have just described, 2Ti_3:5; 2Pe_2:17. καί οὗτος, this one just mentioned also, i. e. as well as the rest, Luk_20:30 R G L; Heb_8:3. καί τοῦτον, and him too, and him indeed, 1Co_2:2.
c. it refers to the leading subject of a sentence although in position more remote (Winers Grammar, § 23, 1; (Buttmann, § 127, 3)): Act_4:11; Act_7:19; Act_8:26 (on which see Γάζα under the end); 1Jn_5:20 (where οὗτος is referred by (many) orthodox interpreters incorrectly ((see Alford at the passage; Winers Grammar, and Buttmanns Grammar, the passages cited)) to the immediately preceding subject, Christ); 2Jn_1:7.
d. it refers to what follows; οὗτος, αὕτη ἐστι, in this appears ... that etc.; on this depends ... that etc.: followed by ὅτι, as αὕτη ἐστιν ἡ ἐπαγγελία, ὅτι, 1Jn_1:5; add, ; by ἵνα, Joh_15:12; 1Jn_3:11; 1Jn_3:23; 1Jn_5:3; 2Jn_1:6; τοῦτο ἐστι τό ἔργον, τό θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἵνα, Joh_6:29; Joh_6:39 f.
e. it serves to repeat the subject with emphasis: οὐ πάντες οἱ ἐξ Ἰσραήλ, οὗτοι Ἰσραήλ, Rom_9:6; add, ; (L marginal reading οἱ τοιοῦτοι); Rom_7:10; Gal_3:7; it refers, not without special force, to a description given by a participle or by the relative ὅς, ὅστις; which description either follows, as Mar_4:16; Mar_4:18; Luk_8:15; Luk_8:21; Luk_9:9; Joh_11:37; followed by a relative sentence, Joh_1:15; 1Pe_5:12; or precedes: in the form of a participle, Mat_10:22; Mat_13:20; Mat_13:22; Mat_24:13; Mat_26:23; Mar_12:40; Luk_9:48 (ὁ ... ὑπάρχων, οὗτος); Joh_6:46; Joh_7:18; Joh_15:5; 2Jn_1:9; Act_17:7; (and R G in Rev_3:5); or of the relative ὅς, Mat_5:19; Mar_3:35; Luk_9:24; Luk_9:26; Joh_1:33 (here L marginal reading αὐτός); ; Rom_8:30; 1Co_7:20; Heb_13:11; 1Jn_2:5; 2Pe_2:19; in the neuter, Joh_8:26; Rom_7:16; 1Co_7:24; Php_4:9; 2Ti_2:2; or of a preceding ὅστις, Mat_18:4; in the neuter Php_3:7. ὅσοι ... οὗτοι, Rom_8:14; Gal_6:12; also preceded by εἰ τίς, 1Co_3:17 (here Lachmann αὐτός); ; Jas_1:23; Jas_3:2; by ἐάν τίς, Joh_9:31; cf. Winers Grammar, § 23, 4.
f. with αὐτός annexed, this man himself, Act_25:25; plural these themselves, Act_24:15; Act_24:20; on the neuter see below, 2 a. b. etc.
g. As the relative and interrogative pronoun so also the demonstrative, when it is the subject, conforms in gender and number to the noun in the predicate: οὗτοι εἰσιν οἱ υἱοί τῆς βασιλείας, Mat_13:38; add, Mark 4:15 f, 18; αὕτη ἐστιν ἡ μεγάλη ἐντολή, Mat_22:38; οὗτος ἐστιν ὁ πλάνος (German diesesind), 2Jn_1:7.
2. The neuter τοῦτο a. refers to what precedes: Luk_5:6; Joh_6:61; Act_19:17; τοῦτο εἰπών, and the like, Luk_24:40 (T omits; Tr brackets WH reject the verse); Joh_4:18; Joh_8:6; Joh_12:33; Joh_18:38; διά τοῦτο, see διά, B. II. 2 a.; εἰς τοῦτο, see εἰς, B. II. 3 c. β.; αὐτό τοῦτο, for this very cause, 2Pe_1:5 (Lachmann αὐτοί); cf. Matthiae, § 470, 7; Passow, under the word, C. 1 a. at the end (Liddell and Scott, under the word, C. IX. 1 at the end; Winer's Grammar, § 21, 3 note 2; Kühner, § 410 Anm. 6); μετά τοῦτο, see μετά, II. 2 b. ἐκ τούτου, for this reason (see ἐκ, II. 8), Joh_6:66; Joh_19:12; from this, i. e. hereby, by this note, 1Jn_4:6 (cf. Westcott at the passage). ἐν τούτῳ, for this cause, Joh_16:30; Act_24:16; hereby, by this token, 1Jn_3:19. ἐπί τούτῳ, in the meanwhile, while this was going on (but see ἐπί, B. 2 e., at the end, p. 234a), Joh_4:27. τούτου χάριν, Eph_3:14. plural ταῦτα, Joh_7:4 (these so great, so wonderful, things); μετά ταῦτα, see μετά, II. 2 b. κατά ταῦτα, in this same manner, Rec. in Luk_6:23, and (others, τά αὐτά or ταῦτα). it refers to the substance of the preceding discourse: Luk_8:8; Luk_11:27; Luk_24:26; Joh_5:34; Joh_15:11; Joh_21:24, and very often. καθώς ... ταῦτα, Joh_8:28.
b. it prepares the reader or hearer and renders him attentive to what follows, which tires gets special weight (Winer's Grammar, § 23, 5): 1Jn_4:2; αὐτό τοῦτο ὅτι, Php_1:6; τοῦτο λέγω followed by direct discourse, Gal_3:17 (see λέγω, II. 2 d.). it is prefixed to sentences introduced by the particles ὅτι, ἵνα, etc.: τοῦτο λέγω or φημί followed by ὅτι, 1Co_1:12 ((see λέγω as above); 1Co_7:29); ; γινώσκεις τοῦτο followed by ὅτι, Rom_6:6; 2Ti_3:1; 2Pe_1:20; 2Pe_3:3; λογίζεσθαι τοῦτο ὅτι, Rom_2:3; after ὁμολογεῖν, Act_24:14; after εἰδώς, 1Ti_1:9; ἐν τούτῳ ὅτι, 1Jn_3:16; 1Jn_3:24; 1Jn_4:9 f; τοῦτο, ἵνα, Luk_1:43; εἰς τοῦτο, ἵνα, Act_9:21; Rom_14:9; 2Co_2:9; 1Pe_3:9; 1Pe_4:6; 1Jn_3:8; διά τοῦτο, ἵνα, 2Co_13:10; 1Ti_1:16; Phm_1:15; τούτων (on this neuter plural referring to a single object see Winers Grammar, 162 (153); (cf. Riddell, Platonic Idioms, § 41)), ἵνα, 3Jn_1:4; ἐν τούτῳ, ἐάν, 1Jn_2:3; ὅταν, 1Jn_5:2; τοῦτο αὐτό, ἵνα, on this very account, that (see a. above (but others take it here as the accusative of object; see Meyer at the passage (for instances of αὐτό τοῦτο see Buttmann, § 127, 12))), 2Co_2:3; εἰς αὐτό τοῦτο, ἵνα, Eph_6:22; Col_4:8; ὅπως, Rom_9:17. In the same manner τοῦτο is put before an infinitive with τό for the sake of emphasis (Winers Grammar, § 23, 5; Buttmann, § 140, 7, 9, etc.): 2Co_2:1; before a simple infinitive, 1Co_7:37 (here R G prefix τοῦ to the infinitive); before an accusative and infinitive Eph_4:17; before nouns, as τοῦτο εὔχομαι, τήν ὑμῶν κατάρτισιν, 2Co_13:9, cf. 1Jn_3:24; 1Jn_5:4.
c. καί τοῦτο, and this, and that too, and indeed, especially: Rom_13:11; 1Co_6:6, L T Tr WH also in 8; Eph_2:8; καί ταῦτα, and that too, 1Co_6:8 Rec.; Heb_11:12; (so καί ταῦτα also in classical Greek; cf. Devar. edition Klotz i., p. 108; Viger. edition Herm., p. 176f; Matthiae, § 470, 6).
d. ταῦτα, of this sort, such, spoken contemptuously of men, 1Co_6:11 (cf. Sophocles O. R 1329; Thucydides 6, 77; Livy 30, 30; cf. Bernhardy (1829), p. 281; (Winers Grammar, 162 (153))).
e. τοῦτο μέν ... τοῦτο δέ, partly ... partly, Heb_10:33 (for examples from Greek anth. see Winers Grammar, 142 (135); Matthiae, ii., § 288 Anm. 2; (Kühner, § 527 Anm. 2)).
f. τουτ' ἐστιν, see εἰμί, II. 3, p. 176{b} .
II. Joined to nouns it is used like an adjective;
a. so that the article stands between the demonstrative and the noun, οὗτος ὁ, αὕτη ἡ, τοῦτο τό (cf. Winers Grammar, § 23 at the end; Buttmann, § 127, 29): Mat_12:32; Mat_16:18; Mat_17:21 (T WH omits; Tr brackets the verse); ; Mar_9:29; Luk_7:44; Luk_10:36; Luk_14:30; Luk_15:24; Joh_4:15; Joh_7:46 (L WH omit; Tr brackets the clause); ; Act_1:11; Rom_11:24; 1Ti_1:18; Heb_7:1; Heb_8:10; (1Jn_4:21); Rev_19:9; Rev_20:14; Rev_21:5; Rev_22:6. etc.; τοῦτο τό παιδίον, such a little child as ye see here, Luk_9:48; cf. Bornemann at the passage (who takes τοῦτο thus as representing the class, 'this and the like;' but cf. Meyer (edited by Weiss) at the passage).
b. so that the noun stands between the article and the demonstrative (cf. Winer's Grammar, 548 (510)); as, οἱ λίθοι οὗτοι, the stones which ye see lying near, Mat_3:9; Mat_4:3; add, Mat_5:19; Mat_7:24 (L Tr WH brackets τούτους), (Tr marginal reading WH marginal reading αὐτῆς); Mat_10:23, etc.; Mar_12:16; Mar_13:30; Luk_11:31; Luk_23:47; Joh_4:13; Joh_4:21; Joh_7:49; Joh_11:9; Joh_18:29; Act_6:13; Act_19:26; Rom_15:28; 1Co_1:20; 1Co_2:6; 1Co_11:26; 2Co_4:1; 2Co_4:7; 2Co_8:6; 2Co_11:10; 2Co_12:13; Eph_3:8; Eph_5:32; 2Ti_2:19; Rev_2:24, and very often (which construction is far more frequent with Paul than the other (see Winer's Grammar, as above)); it is added to a noun which has another adjective, ἡ χήρα ἡ πτωχή αὕτη, Luk_21:3; πάντα τά ῤήματα ταῦτα, Luk_2:19; Luk_2:51 ((T WH L marginal reading omit; L text Tr marginal reading brackets ταῦτα); ἀπό τῆς γενεάς τῆς σκολιᾶς ταύτης, Act_2:40).
c. Passages in which the reading varies between οὗτος ὁ and ὁ ... οὗτος: viz. οὗτος ὁ, Mar_14:30 L text T Tr WH; Joh_4:20 R L marginal reading; Joh_6:60 R G; Joh_7:36 R G; Joh_9:24 L WH Tr marginal reading; Joh_21:23 L T Tr WH. ὁ ... οὗτος, Mar_14:30 R G L marginal reading; Joh_4:20 G L text T Tr WH; Joh_6:60 L T Tr WH; John vii 36 L T Tr WH; Joh_9:24 G T Tr text; Joh_21:23 R G; etc.
d. with anarthrous nouns, especially numerical specifications (Winer's Grammar, § 37, 5 N. 1): τρίτον τοῦτο, this third time, 2Co_13:1; τοῦτο τρίτον, Joh_21:14 (Jdg_16:15; δεύτερον τοῦτο, Gen_27:36; τοῦτο δέκατον, Num_14:22; τέταρτον τοῦτο, Herodotus 5, 76). (The passages which follow, although introduced here by Prof. Grimm, are (with the exception of Act_1:5) clearly instances of the predicative use of οὗτος; cf. Winers Grammar, 110 (105) note; Buttmann, § 127, 31; Rost § 98, 3 A.
c. α. following): τοῦτο πάλιν δεύτερον σημεῖον ἐποίησεν, Joh_4:54; τρίτην ταύτην ἡμέραν ἄγει, this is the third day that Israel is passing (but see ἄγω, 3), Luk_24:21 (κεῖμαι τριακοστην ταύτην ἡμέραν, this is now the thirtieth day that I lie (unburied), Lucian, dial. mort. 13, 3); οὐ μετά πολλάς ταύτας ἡμέρας (see μετά, II. 2 b. (Winers Grammar, 161 (152); Buttmann, § 127, 4)), Act_1:5; οὗτος μήν ἕκτος ἐστιν αὐτῇ, this is the sixth month with her etc. Luk_1:36; αὕτη ἀπογραφή πρώτη ἐγένετο, Luk_2:2 L (T) Tr WH; ταύτην ἐποίησεν ἀρχήν τῶν σημείων, Joh_2:11 L T Tr WH.

οὗτος [page 467]
A few of the prepositional phrases with this common demonstrative pron. may be illustrated διὰ τοῦτο , on this account, cf. P Ryl II. 84 .5 (A.D. 146) τὴν ἄνεσιν τὴν διὰ τοῦτο γενομένην τῶν ὑπαρχόντων , the ensuing remission of the lands (Edd.) : ἐκ τούτου , for this reason, Joh_6:66 cf. ib. 81 .24 ( c. A.D. 104) ἐκ τούτου δὲ [φανε ]ρόν ἐστιν [καὶ ] μηδένα χρῇζειν , it is evident from this that nobody wants it (Edd.), BGU II. 423 .17 (a son to his father ii/A.D.) (= Selections , p. 91) με ἐπαίδευσας καλῶς , καὶ ἐκ τούτου ἐλπίζω ταχὺ προκόσ (= ψ )αι τῶν θε [ῶ ]ν θελόντων , you have brought me up well, and for this reason I hope to be quickly promoted, if the gods will : τούτου ἕνεκα , for this purpose, cf. P Oxy I. 113 .28 (ii/A.D.) ἐὰν δ᾽ ἄρα μή , ἅμα τῷ υἱῶι μου ἐξέρχομαι τούτου ἕνεκα , otherwise I and my son will come for this purpose (Edd.) : ἐπὶ τούτων , upon this, in the meanwhile, cf. PSI VI. 598 .21 (iii/B.C.) περὶ ὧν γράψω Ἑρμαφίλωι καὶ Ἵππωνι καὶ Ἡρακ̣λ̣ε̣ι̣τωι· διωμολογήθη γὰρ ἐπὶ τούτ̣ων , where, however, the editor prefers the meaning in their presence : and κατὰ ταῦτα , in the same way, Luk_6:23 v.l. cf. ib. III. 235 .28 (ii/A.D.) κατὰ ταῦτα δὲ ἀξιῶ , and in the same way I ask.
The abrupt ταῦτα ( sc γίνεται ) of the boy s letter P Oxy I. 119 .15 (ii/iii A.D.) (= Selections , p. 103) ἀμ μὴ πέμψῃς , οὐ μὴ φάγω , οὐ μὴ πείνω . ταῦτα , if you don t send, I won t eat, I won t drink. There now, may be paralleled from the inscrr., as C. and B. ii. p. 386, No. 232 .21 , where a certain Gaius sums up his principles with the words ταῦτα , φίλοι , and ib. p. 700, No. 635, where a protest is uttered against Christian teaching in the words οὐκ ἤμην· ἐγενόμην· οὐκ ἔσομαι· οὐ μέλι μοι ὁ βίος· ταῦτα . See Evans CQ xv. (1921), p. 24, and add the long metrical epitaph and curse, BCH iii. p. 144, which ends with ταῦτα , so much, in a line by itself : see Ramsay Luke , p. 274. For the expressive αἱ χεῖρες αὗται in Ac 20 .84 , these hands (stretching them out), Field ( Notes , p. 133) compares Philost. Her. p. 162 (ed. Boiss.) : εὶπόντος γοῦν ποτε πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἀχιλλέως , Ὦ Παλάμηδες , ἀγροικότερος φαίνῃ τοῖς πολλοῖς , ὅτι μὴ πέπασαι τὸν θεραπεύσοντα , Τί οὖν ΤΑΥΤΑ , ἔφη , ὦ Ἀχιλλεῦ ; τὼ χεῖρε ἄμφω προτείνας .
The combination αὐτὰ ταῦτα is found in P Oxy IV. 743 .38 (B.C. 2) ἵνα αὐτῷ αὐτὰ ταῦτα ὑποδίξω , in order that I may inform him of these very things, similarly PSI III. 235 .28 (ii/A.D.), cf. ib. IV. 343 .7 (B.C. 256 5) ἠσχολήμεθα πρὸς αὐτοῖς τούτοις . In P Meyer 13 .11 (A.D. 141) an ass is sold τοῦτον τοιοῦτον ἀναπόριφον , such as it is, without the possibility of its being returned : cf. P Ryl II. 158 .13 (A.D. 138?), P Oxy I. 95 .18 (A.D. 129). A fem. form ταύτων , explained by Mayser Gr. p. 113 as due to false analogy with the sing., was formerly found in P Lond 24 .23 (B.C. 162) (= I. p. 13) περὶ ταύτων , but Wilcken (UPZ i. p. 213) now reads περὶ ταῦτ᾽ ὧν : see, however, P Tebt I. 24 .98 (B.C. 117). There are traces in the inscrr. and papyri of a vulgar form τοῦτος , which survives in MGr : see Dieterich Untersuchungen , p. 197.
