ὅτι (properly neuter of ὅστις), a conjunction (from Homer down) (Latinquod (cf. Winers Grammar, § 53, 8 b.; Buttmann, § 139, 51; § 149, 3)), marking:
I. the substance or contents (of a statement), that;
1. joined to verbs of saying and declaring (where the accusative and infinitive is used in Latin): ἀναγγέλλειν, Act_14:27; διηγεῖσθαι, Act_9:27; εἰπεῖν, Mat_16:20; Mat_28:7; Mat_28:13; Joh_7:42; Joh_16:15; 1Co_1:15; λέγειν, Mat_3:9; Mat_8:11; Mar_3:28; Luk_15:7; Joh_16:20; Rom_4:9 (T Tr WH omit; L brackets ὅτι); , and very often; προειρηκέναι, 2Co_7:3; before the ὅτι in Act_14:22 supply λέγοντες, contained in the preceding παρακαλοῦντες (cf. Buttmann, § 151, 11); ὅτι after γράφειν, 1Co_9:10; 1Jn_2:12-14; μαρτυρεῖν, Mat_23:31; Joh_1:34; Joh_3:28; Joh_4:44; ὁμολογεῖν, Heb_11:13; δεικνύειν, Mat_16:21; δηλουν, 1Co_1:11; διδάσκειν, 1Co_11:14. after ἐμφανίζειν, Heb_11:14; δῆλον (ἐστιν), 1Co_15:27; Gal_3:11; 1Ti_6:7 (where L T Tr WH omit δῆλον (and then ὅτι simply introduces the reason, because (Buttmann, 358 (308) to the contrary))); φανεροῦμαι (for φανερόν γίνεται περί ἐμοῦ), 2Co_3:3; 1Jn_2:19. It is added to verbs of swearing, and to forms of oath and affirmation: ὄμνυμι, Rev_10:6; ζῶ ἐγώ (see ζάω, I. 1, p. 270{a} ), Rom_14:11; μάρτυρα τόν Θεόν ἐπικαλοῦμαι, 2Co_1:23; πιστός ὁ Θεός, 2Co_1:18; ἐστιν ἀλήθεια Χριστοῦ ἐν ἐμοί, 2Co_11:10; ἰδού ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ, Gal_1:20; cf. Fritzsche, Ep. ad Romans, ii., p. 242f; (Winers Grammar, § 53, 9; Buttmann, 394 (338)); to verbs of perceiving, knowing, remembering, etc.: ἀκούειν, Joh_14:28; βλέπειν, 2Co_7:8; Heb_3:19; Jas_2:22; θέασθαι, Joh_6:5; γινώσκειν, Mat_21:45; Luk_10:11; Joh_4:53; 2Co_13:6; 1Jn_2:5, etc.; after τοῦτο, Rom_6:6; εἰδέναι, Mat_6:32; Mat_22:16; Mar_2:10; Luk_2:49; Joh_4:42; Joh_9:20; Joh_9:24; Rom_2:2; Rom_6:9; Php_4:15 f, and very often γνωστόν ἐστιν, Act_28:28; ἐπιγινώσκειν, Mar_2:8; Luk_1:22; Act_4:13; ἐπίστασθαί, Act_15:7; νόειν, Mat_15:17; ὁρᾶν, Jas_2:24; καταλαμβάνειν, Act_4:13; Act_10:34; συνιέναι, Mat_16:12; ἀγνοεῖν, Rom_1:13; Rom_2:4; Rom_6:3, etc.; ἀναγινώσκειν, Mat_12:5; Mat_19:4; μνημονεύειν, Joh_16:5; to verbs of thinking, believing, judging, hoping: λογίζεσθαι, Joh_11:50 L T Tr WH; after τοῦτο, Rom_2:3; 2Co_10:11; νομίζειν, Mat_5:17; οἶμαι, Jas_1:7; πέπεισμαι, Rom_8:38; Rom_14:14; Rom_15:14; 2Ti_1:5; 2Ti_1:12; πεποιθέναι, Luk_18:9; 2Co_2:3; Php_2:24; Gal_5:10; 2Th_3:4; Heb_13:18; πιστεύειν, Mat_9:28; Mar_11:23; Rom_10:9; ὑπολαμβάνειν, Luk_7:43; δοκεῖν, Mat_6:7; Mat_26:53; Joh_20:15; ἐλπίζειν, Luk_24:21; 2Co_13:6; κρίνειν τοῦτο ὅτι, 2Co_5:14 (15); to verbs of emotion (where in Latin now the accusative and infinitive is used, nowquod): θαυμάζειν Luk_11:38; χαίρειν, Joh_14:28; 2Co_7:9; 2Co_7:16; Php_4:10; 2Jn_1:4; ἐν τούτῳ ὅτι, Luk_10:20; συγχαίρειν, Luk_15:6; Luk_15:9; μέλει μοι (σοι, αὐτῷ), Mar_4:38; Luk_10:40; to verbs of praising, thanking, blaming (where the Latin usesquod): ἐπαινεῖν, Luk_16:8; 1Co_11:2; 1Co_11:17; ἐξομολογεῖσθαι, Mat_11:25; Luk_10:21; εὐχαριστεῖν, Luk_18:11; χάρις τῷ Θεῷ, Rom_6:17; χάριν ἔχω τίνι, 1Ti_1:12; ἔχω κατά τίνος, ὅτι etc. Rev_2:4; ἔχω τοῦτο ὅτι, I have this (which is praiseworthy) that, Rev_2:6; add, Joh_7:23 (but here ὅτι is causal; cf. Winer's Grammar, § 53, 8 b.); 1Co_6:7; to the verb εἶναι, when that precedes with a demons. pronoun, in order to define more exactly what thing is or wherein it may be seen: αὕτη ἐστιν ὅτι (Latinquod), Joh_3:19; ἐν τούτῳ ὅτι, 1Jn_3:16; 1 John 4:9 f, 13, etc.; περί τούτου ὅτι, Joh_16:19; οὐχ οἷον δέ ὅτι (see οἷος), Rom_9:6; to the verbs γίνεσθαι and εἶναι with an interrogative pronoun, as τί γέγονεν ὅτι etc., what has come to pass that? our how comes it that? Joh_14:22; τί (L marginal reading τίς) ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος, ὅτι, Heb_2:6 from Psa_8:5. τίς ὁ λόγος οὗτος (namely, ἐστιν), ὅτι, Luk_4:36; ποταπός ἐστιν οὗτος, ὅτι, Mat_8:27; τίς ἡ διδαχή αὕτη, ὅτι, Mar_1:27 Rec.; add Mar_4:41.
2. in elliptical formulas (Buttmann, 358 (307); (Winer's Grammar, 585 (544) note)): τί ὅτι etc., equivalent to τί ἐστιν ὅτι (A. V. how is it that), wherefore? Mar_2:16 R G L (others omit τί; cf. 5 below, and see ὅστις, 4); Luk_2:49; Act_5:4; Act_5:9. οὐχ ὅτι for οὐ λέγω ὅτι, our not that, not as though, cf. Buttmann, § 150, 1; (Winer's Grammar, 597 (555)); thus, Joh_6:46; Joh_7:22; 2Co_1:24; 2Co_3:5; Php_3:12; Php_4:11. ὅτι is used for εἰς ἐκεῖνο ὅτι (in reference to the fact that (English seeing that, in that")): thus in Joh_2:18; (Meyer (see his note on 1Co_1:26) would add many other examples, among them Joh_9:17 (see below)); for ἐν τούτῳ ὅτι, Rom_5:8; for περί τούτου ὅτι, concerning this, that: so after λαλεῖν, Mar_1:34; Luk_4:41 (others take ὅτι, in these examples and those after διαλογ. which follow in a causal sense; cf. Winer's Grammar, as below (Ellicott on 2Th_3:7)); after λέγειν, Joh_9:17 (see above); after διαλογίζεσθαι, Mat_16:8; Mar_8:17 (after ἀποστέλλειν σπιστολας, 1Ma_12:7). See examples from classic authors in Fritzsche on Matthew, p. 248f; (Meyer, as above; cf. Winer's Grammar, § 53, 8b.).
3. Noteworthy is the attraction, not uncommon, by which the noun that would naturally be the subject of the subjoined clause, is attracted by the verb of the principal clause and becomes its object (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 66, 5; B § 151, 1 a.); as, οἴδατε τήν οἰκίαν Στεφανᾶ, ὅτι ἐστιν ἀπαρχή, for οἴδατε, ὅτι ἡ οἰκία Στεφανᾶ, κτλ., 1Co_16:15; also after εἰδέναι and ἰδεῖν, Mar_12:34; 1Th_2:1; so after other verbs of knowing, declaring, etc.: Mat_25:24; Joh_9:8; Act_3:10; Act_9:20; 1Co_3:20; 2Th_2:4; Rev_17:8, etc.; ὅν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Θεός ὑμῶν ἐστι, for περί οὐ (cf. Luk_21:5) ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι, Joh_8:54.
4. As respects construction, ὅτι is joined in the N. T.
a. to the indicative even where the opinion of another is introduced, and therefore according to classical usage the optative should have been used; as, διεστείλατο ... ἵνα μηδενί εἴπωσιν, ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός, Mat_16:20; add, ; , etc.
b. to that subjunctive after ὀυτ μή which differs scarcely at all from the future (see μή, IV. 2, p. 411a; (cf. Winer's Grammar, 508 (473))): Mat_5:20; Mat_26:29 (R G; others omit ὅτι); Mar_14:25; Luk_21:32; Joh_11:56 (where before ὅτι supply δοκεῖτε, borrowed from the preceding δοκεῖ); but in Rom_3:8 ὅτι before ποιήσωμεν (hortatory subjunctive (cf. Winers Grammar, § 41 a. 4 a.; Buttmann, 245 (211))) is recitative (see 5 below), depending on λέγουσι (Winers Grammar, 628 (583); Buttmann, § 141, 3).
c. to the infinitive, by a mingling of two constructions, common even in classic Greek, according to which the writer beginning the construction with ὅτι falls into the construction of the accusative with an infinitive: Act_27:10; cf. Winers Grammar, 339 (318) N. 2; (sec. 63, 2c.; Buttmann, 383 (328)). On the anacoluthon found in 1Co_12:2, according to the reading ὅτι ὅτε (which appears in the Sinaiticus manuscript also (and is adopted by L brackets T Tr WH (yet cf. their note))), cf. Buttmann, 383f (328f).
5. ὅτι is placed before direct discourse (`recitative' ὅτι) (Buttmann,sec. 139, 51; Winer's Grammar, § 65, 3 c.; § 60, 9 (and Moulton's note)): Mat_2:23(?); ; Mark ( T Tr WH (see 2 above); but see ὅστις, 4); (cf. Buttmann, 237 (204)); Luk_1:61; Luk_2:23; Luk_4:43; Luk_15:27; Joh_1:20; Joh_4:17; Joh_15:25; Joh_16:17; Act_15:1; Heb_11:18; 1Jn_4:20; Rev_3:17, etc.; most frequently after λέγω, which see II. 1 a., p. 373{a} bottom (Noteworthy is 2Th_3:10, cf. Buttmann, § 139, 53.)
II. the reason why anything is said to be or to be done, because, since, for that, for (a causal conjunc.; Latinquod,quia,quom,nam); (on the difference between it and γάρ cf. Westcott, Epistles of John, p. 70);
a. it is added to a speaker's words to show what ground he gives for his opinion; as, μακάριος etc. ὅτι, Mat_5:4-12; Mat_13:16; Luk_6:20; Luk_14:14; after οὐαί, Mat_11:21; Mat_23:13-15; Mat_23:23; Mat_23:25; Mat_23:27; Mat_23:29; Luk_6:24; Luk_10:13; Luk_11:42-44; Luk_11:46; Luk_11:52; Jud_1:11; cf. further, Mat_7:13; Mat_17:15; Mat_25:8; Mar_5:9; Mar_9:38 (G Tr marginal reading omit; Tr text brackets the clause); Luk_7:47; Luk_23:40; Joh_1:30; Joh_5:27; Joh_9:16; Joh_16:9-11; Joh_16:14; Joh_16:16 (T Tr WH omit; L brackets the clause); Act_1:5, and often; or is added by the narrator, to give the reason for his own opinion: Mat_2:18; Mat_9:36; Mar_3:30; Mar_6:34; Joh_2:25; Act_1:17; or, in general, by a teacher, and often in such a way that it relates to his entire statement or views: Mat_5:43; 1Jn_4:18; 2Jn_1:7; Rev_3:10.
b. ὅτι makes reference to some word or words that precede or immediately follow it (cf. Winers Grammar, § 23, 5; § 53, 8 b.; Buttmann, § 127, 6); as, διά τοῦτο, Joh_8:47; Joh_10:17; Joh_12:39; 1Jn_3:1, etc. διά τί; Rom_9:32; 2Co_11:11. χάριν τίνος; 1Jn_3:12. οὕτως, Rev_3:16. ἐν τούτῳ, 1Jn_3:20. ὅτι in the protasis, Joh_1:50(); . It is followed by διά τοῦτο, Joh_15:19. οὐχ ὅτι ... ἀλλ' ὅτι, not because ... but because, Joh_6:26; Joh_12:6.
III. On the combination ὡς ὅτι see ὡς, I. 3.

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
ὅτι [page 463]
(1) For ὅτι , that, introducing an objective clause after verbs of knowing, saying, etc., cf. P Tebt II. 409 .8 (A.D. 5) εἰδὼ [ς ὅ ]τι ἐξνιύουσίαν αὐτῶν ἔχει καὶ Λυσίμαχος καὶ σύ , I knew that both you and Lysimachus had plenty of them (Edd.), P Fay 109 .5 (early i/A.D.) νομίσας ὅτι (cf.Mt 5 .17 ) κιχρᾷς μοι αὐτούς . consider that you are lending them ( sc. staters) to me (Edd.), BGU III. 846 .4 f. (ii/A.D.) (= Selections , p. 93) γεινώσκειν σαι θέλω , ὅτι̣ οὐχ [ἥλπ ]ιζον , ὅτι ἀναβένις ( l. ἀναβαίνεις ) εἰς τὴν μητρόπολιν , I wish you to know that I had no hope that you were coming up to the metropolis, ib. .9 αἴγραψά σοι , ὅτι γυμνός εἰμει , I wrote you that I am naked, and P Tebt II. 420 .4 (iii/A.D.) οἴδατε ὅτι ἀπὸ ζημίας ἠμί , You know that I am blameless. Ὅτι , however, is frequently omitted, e.g. BGU III. 815 .3 (ii/A.D.) γεινόσκιν σε θέγω [τὴ ]ν ἐπιστολήν σου ἔλαβε (corrected by another hand into ἔλαβα ) : similarly in the NT. The periphrasis with ὅτι has superseded acc. c. inf. in nearly all NT writers, but the two constructions have been mixed in P Oxy II. 237 v. 8 (A.D. 186) δηλῶν ὅτι εἰ τὰ ἀληθῆ φανείη μηδὲ κρίσεως δεῖσθαι τὸ πρᾶγμα : cf. Act_27:10 and Aristeas 125. In Mar_9:11 ; Mar_9:28 the AV rightly takes ὅτι = τί , why : for this use of ὅτι in indirect interrogation, see the exx. in Field Notes , p. 33.
(2) Ὅτι recitativum , when it is practically equivalent to our quotation-marks, is seen, as in Mat_7:23 al. , in P Oxy IV. 744 .11 (B.C. 1) (= Selections , p. 33) εἴρηκας δὲ Ἀφροδισιᾶτι ὅτι μή με ἐπιλάθῃς , you told Aphrodisias Do not forget me, P Oxy I. 119 .10 (ii/iii A.D.) ( = Selections , p. 103) ἡ μήτηρ μου εἶπε Ἀρχελάῳ , ὅτι ἀναστατοῖ με , my mother said to Archelaus, He upsets me, and ib . VII. 1064 .5 (iii/A.D.) γενόμενος πρὸς Ἀχιλλᾶν πυνθανόμενος περὶ σοῦ ἔφη ὅτι ἐν τῇ Ψώβθει ἐστίν , I went to Achillas and inquired about you and he said He is at Psobthis. Cf. the construction in such passages as P Oxy III. 533 .15 (ii/iii A.D.) εἴπατε Ζωίλῳ τῷ ἀπὸ Σεντὼ γνεωργῷ ὅτ [ι ] κατὰ τὰς συνθήκας φρόντισον τοῦ χαλκοῦ , tell Zoilus the cultivator from Sento that in accordance with the agreements he must look after the money (Edd.), and P Tebt II. 416 .17 (iii/A.D.) μετάδε̣(= ο )ς καὶ Ἀκουτᾶτι τῷ ἀδελφῷ ὅτι ἐὰν χρίαν τινὸς ἔχῃ ἡ γυνή μου ποίησον αὐτῆς̣ τὴν χρίαν ἕως ἔλθω , tell my brother Akoutas also to do anything that my wife requires until I come (Edd.). For the redundant ὅτι , cf. further P Oxy XIV. 1668 .6 (iii/A.D.) πρότερον μὲν ἔλεγεν ὅτι ἢ δός μο̣ι̣ (ἀρτάβας ) ῑβ̄ , ἢ λαβὲ (ἀρτ .) ι̣β̄ , formerly he said Either give me 12 artabae or take 12 art (Edd.), ib. 1682 .9 (iv/A.D.) ἀναγκαίως δὲ καὶ ἡμεῖν ἐπίστειλον ὅτι εἰ ἦς ἐπιδημήσασα , do you by all means send word to us whether you have arrived (Edd.).
(3) ὅτι , as a causal particle, because, may be illustrated by P Par 48 .19 (B.C. 153) καλῶς οὖν ποιήσεις παραγίνεσθαι ἡμῖν εἰς Ποεί , ο̣[τι καταπλεῖν μέλλομεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα , BGU II. 423 .16 (a soldier to his father ii/A.D.) (= Selections , p. 91) ἵνα σου προσκυνήσω τὴν χεραν , ὅτι με ἐπαίδευσας καλῶς , that I may kiss your hand, because you have brought me up well, and ib. III. 846 .9 (ii/A.D.) (= Selections , p. 94) α̣ἰδ [υ ]σ̣οπο [ύ ]μην ( l. ἐδυσωπούμην ) δὲ ἐλθεῖν εἰς Καρανίδαν ὅτι σαπρῶς παι̣ρ̣ι̣πατῶ ( l. περιπατῶ ), but I was ashamed to come to Karanis, because I am going about in rags.
(4) A few miscellaneous exx. may be added. P Oxy I. 37 i. 12 (report of a lawsuit A.D. 49) (= Selections , p. 49) ὅτι δὲ ταῦτα ἀληθῆι λέγωι , ἔστιν γράμματα αὐτῆς δι᾽ ὧν ὁμολογεῖ εἰληφέναι , and in proof that I am telling the truth, there are the documents in which she admits that she has received them (wages). For the consecutive ὅτι in Joh_7:35 Bauer ( HZNT ad l. ) cites Pelagia-Legenden , p. 20, τί διδοῖς τοῖς ἀμνοῖς σου , ὅτι ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἔχουσιν ; A similar ex. is cited by Radermacher ( Gr. p. 160) from the Acta Christophori , ed. Usener 68, 18 : τοιοῦτοι γάρ εἰσιν οἱ θεοὶ ὑμῶν , ὅτι ὑπὸ γυναικὸς ἐκινήθησαν . With the NT οὐχ ὅτι ( 2Th_3:9 al. ) cf. μὴ ὅτι in P Lond 42 .23 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 30, Selections , p. 10), μὴ ὅτι γε τοσούτου χρόνου ἐπιγεγονότος , not to speak of so much time having gone by. In the difficult 1Ti_6:7 Parry reads οὐδ᾽ ὅτι (= nedum ) with a similar meaning : see his note ad l. , and for a different view Field Notes , pp. 212, 243. In 2Co_5:19 al. ὡς ὅτι is taken by Blass Gr. .2 p. 321 f. as = Attic ὡς c. gen. abs. (Vg quasi ), but in papyri of late date ὡς ὅτι often means merely that, e.g. CPR I. 19 .3 (A.D. 330) πρώην βίβλια ἐπιδέδωκα τῇ σῇ ἐπιμελείᾳ ὡς ὅτι ἐβουλήθην τινὰ ὑπάρχοντά μου ἀποδόσθαι , where Wessely (p. 58) notes ὡς ὅτι seem combined, where the single word would be adequate, and cites as a further ex. Papyrus No. 6085 ὡς ὅτι χρεοστεῖται ἐξ αὐτοῦ ὁ κύρις Ἰανός .
A superfluous ὅτι in ὡς ὅτι c. superlat. is seen in Roberts-Gardner 65 .17 (B.C. 101 100 or 100 99) (β )οῦν ὡς ὅτι κάλλιστον παρήγαγον . The editors compare CIA ii. 482 .48 (B.C. 41 30) παραστήσαντες ὡ ]ς ὅτι κάλλιστα θύματα .
