ὅπως (from πῶς and the relative ὁ), with the indicative, a relative adverb but, like the Latinut, assuming also the nature of a conjunction (cf. Winer's Grammar, 449 (418f)). I. As an adverb; as, in what manner, how; once so in the N. T. in an indirect question, with the indicative: οὐκ ἔγνως, ὅπως κτλ., Luk_24:20, where cf. Bornemann, Scholia etc. II. A conjunction, Latinut, answering to the German dass, that; in classical Greek with the optative, and subjunctive, and future indicative; cf. especially Klotz ad Devar. ii. 2, p. 681ff But the distinction observed between these constructions by the more elegant Greek writings is quite neglected in the N. T., and if we except Mat_26:59 L T Tr (ὅπως θανατώσουσιν) (1Co_1:29 Rec.elz), only the subjunctive follows this particle (for in Mar_5:23, for ὅπως ... ζήσεται, L text T Tr WH have correctly restored ἵνα ... ζήσῃ); cf. Winers Grammar, 289 (271); Buttmann, 233f (201f); (214 (185)). 1. It denotes the purpose or end, in order that; with the design or to the end that; that; a. without ἄν after the present, Mat_6:2; Mat_6:16; Phm_1:6; Heb_9:15; after ἐστε to be supplied, 1Pe_2:9; after the perfect, Act_9:17; Heb_2:9; ὅπως μή, Luk_16:26; after the imperfect, Mat_26:59 (R G (see above)); Act_9:24; after the aorist, Act_9:2; Act_9:12; Act_25:26; Rom_9:17; Gal_1:4; ὅπως μή, Act_20:16; 1Co_1:29; after the pluperfect, Joh_11:57; after the future, Mat_23:35; and Rec. in Act_24:26; after an aorist subjunctive by which something is asked for, Mar_5:23 Rec.; after imperatives, Mat_2:8; Mat_5:16; Mat_5:45; Mat_6:4; Act_23:15; Act_23:23; 2Co_8:11; ὅπως μή, Mat_6:18; after clauses with ἵνα and the aorist subjunctive, Luk_16:28; 2Co_8:14; 2Th_1:12. Noteworthy is the phrase ὅπως πληροθη, i. e. that according to God's purpose it might be brought to pass or might be proved by the event, of O. T. prophecies and types (see ἵνα, II. 3 at the end): Mat_2:23; Mat_8:17; Mat_12:17 (where L T Tr WH ἵνα); . b. ὅπως ἄν, that, if it be possible, Mat_6:5 R G; that, if what I have just said shall come to pass, Luk_2:35; Act_3:20 () (R. V. that so); ; Rom_3:4 (Buttmann, 234 (201)); examples from the Sept. are given in Winer's Grammar, § 42, 6. 2. As in the Greek writings also (cf. Winers Grammar, 338 (317); (Buttmann, § 139, 41)), ὅπως with the subjunctive is used after verbs of praying, entreating, asking, exhorting, to denote what one wishes to be done: Mat_8:34 (here L ἵνα); ; Luk_7:3; Luk_10:2; Luk_11:37; Act_8:15; Act_8:24; Act_9:2; Act_23:20; Act_25:3; Jas_5:16; after a verb of deliberating: Mat_12:14; Mat_22:15; Mar_3:6 (from which examples it is easy to see how the use noted in II. arises from the original adverbial force of the particle; for συμβούλιον ἐδίδουν ... ὅπως αὐτόν ἀπολέσωσιν, they took counsel to destroy him is equivalent to how they might destroy him, and also to to this end that they might destroy him; cf. Kühner, § 552 Anm. 3, ii., p. 892).

ὅπως hopōs 53x can function as a conj., how, in what way or manner, by what means, Mat_22:5 ; Luk_24:20 ; conj. that, in order that, and ὅπως μή , that not, lest, Mat_6:2 ; Mat_6:4-5 ; Mat_6:16 ; Mat_6:18 ; Act_9:2 , et al. freq.

ὅπως [page 454] (1) An interesting use of ὅπως , in which it is virtually a conjunction = in which case, is seen in such passages as P Tebt II. 414 .32 (ii/A.D.) ἡ ληνὲ (= ὶ )ς τοῦ Ἀγαθανγέλου ἐστίν , ὅπως τοῖς παιδίο <ι >ς δοθῇ , the trough belongs to Agathangelus, so let it be given to the children (Edd.). See further Proleg. p. 177 n .1 . (2) For ὅπως , like πῶς , used in the sense of ὡς , ὅτι (cf. Blass Gr. p. 230 f.), we may recall the letter of the prodigal BGU III. 846 .16 (ii/A.D.) (= Selections , p. 95) οὐκ οἶδες , ὅτι θέλω πη̣ρο̣̣ς γενέσται , εἰ γνοῦναι , ὄ̣π̣ως ἀνθρόπῳ [ἔ ]τ [ι ] ὀφείλω ὀβολόν ; do you not know that I would rather be a cripple than be conscious that I am still owing anyone an obolus? Deissmann ( LAE , p. 179 n. .28 ) finds a beginning of this usage in Luk_24:20 , the only place in the NT where ὅπως is construed with the ind. (but cf. Mat_26:59 A). (3) Ὅπως , in order that, is seen c. subj. with ἄν in PSI V. 512 .8 (B.C. 253 2) ἐγὼ δὲ προ̣̣ς τοὺς μελισσοργοὺς ἐπορεύθην ὅπως ἂν εἰδήσω ὡς πωλῖται , I went to the bee-keepers that I might know how it is sold, and without ἄν in such passages as P Par 46 .16 (B.C. 153) γέγραφά σοι ὅπω [ς ] Ἀπολλωνίῳ παραγγείλῃς , P Ryl II. 139 .19 (A.D. 34) διὸ ἀξιῶι γράψαι τῶι τῆς κώιμης ἀρχεφόδῳ ὅπως ἀναζήτησιν ποιήσηται , and P Tebt II. 419 .4 (iii/A.D.) πέμψον τὴν ὄνον ὅπως σφραγισθῇ .
