ὀλολύζω [page 446] This NT ἅπ . εἰρ . ( Jas_5:1 ) occurs in the curious spell for transforming a goddess into the appearance of an old woman, P Lond 125 verso .30 (V/A.D.) (= I. p. 124) ὀλολύξασ᾽ ἡ γραῦς φεύξεται ὅπως μὴ εὐκόλως αὐτὴν ἀπολύσῃς . For the subst. see P Leid W xxi. 30 (ii/iii A.D.) (= II. p. 155 ) ἔσω προσβαλόμενος μύκησαι ὀλολυγμός ( l. μόν ), P Lond 121 .323 (iii/A.D.) (=1. p. 94) μὴ φωνὴ μὴ ὀλολυγμὸς μὴ σιυριγμός ( l. συριγμός ), and .769 (p. 109). For the adj. ὀλολυγαῖος see Kaibel 546 .6 (Imperial) ὀλολυγαία νυκτερίς , a howling bat, and for ὀλολύκτρια (not in LS) applied to a woman crying aloud at a sacrifice see Syll 566 (= .3 982) .35 (ii/B.C.). The words are onomatopoetic : cf. ὑλακτέω , Lat. ululare.
