ὄζω [page 439] With the use of this verb in Joh_11:39 (cf. Exo_8:14 ) cf. PSI IV. 297 .3 (V/A.D. ?) δριμὺ ὀ̣[σ ]δομένου τοῦ σώματος , the body emitting a pungent odour : for the form ὀσδομένου see the editor s introduction. When word was brought to Athens of the death of Alexander, Demades denied the report, since, had it been true, the whole earth would long ago have been filled with the stench of the body πάλαι γὰρ ἂν ὅλην ὄζειν νεκροῦ τὴν οἰκουμένην (Plut. Phoc. 22).

"to smell or savour" of a thing, Lat. sapere aliquid, Κρονίων ὄζων "smelling of" musty antiquity, id=Ar. impers., ὄζει ἀπ᾽ αὐτῆς ὡσεὶ ἴων "there is a smell" from it as of violets, Hdt. ; ὄζει ἡδὺ τῆς χρόας "there is a" sweet "smell from" the skin, Ar. ;—so c. dupl. gen., ἱματίων ὀζήσει δεξιότητος "there will be an odour of" cleverness "from" your clothes, id=Hdt.
