νῦν, and νυνί (which see in its place), adverb now, Latinnunc (the Sept. for ςΗϊΘΜδ; (from Homer down)); 1. adverb of Time, now, i. e. at the present time; a. so used that by the thing which is now said to be or to be done the present time is opposed to past time: Joh_4:18; Joh_9:21; Act_16:37; Act_23:21; Rom_13:11; 2Th_2:6; 2Co_7:9; 2Co_13:2; Php_1:30; Php_2:12; Php_3:18; Col_1:24, etc.; frequently it denotes a somewhat extended portion of present time as opposed to a former state of things: Luk_16:25; Act_7:4; Gal_1:23; Gal_3:3; specifically, the time since certain persons received the Christian religion, Rom_5:9; Rom_5:11; Rom_6:19; Rom_6:21; Rom_8:1; Gal_2:20; Gal_4:29; 1Pe_2:10; 1Pe_2:25; or the time since man has had the blessing of the gospel, as opposed to past times, equivalent to in our times, our age: Act_7:52; Rom_16:26; 2Co_6:2; Eph_3:5; Eph_3:10; 2Ti_1:10; 1Pe_1:12; 1Pe_3:21,(cf. Epistle ad Diogn. 1 [ET]). b. opposed to future time: Joh_12:21; Joh_13:36 (opposed to ὕστερον); ; Rom_11:31; 1Co_16:12; νῦν καί εἰς πάντας τούς αἰῶνας, Jud_1:25; used to distinguish this present age, preceding Christ's return, from the age which follows that return: Luk_6:21; Luk_6:25; Eph_2:2; Heb_2:8; 2Pe_3:18; 1Jn_2:28; with ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ added, Mar_10:30. c. Sometimes νῦν with the present is used of what will occur forthwith or soon, Luk_2:29; Joh_12:31; Joh_16:5; Joh_17:13; Act_26:17. with a preterite, of what has just been done, Mat_26:65; Joh_21:10; or very lately (but now, just now, hyperbolically, equivalent to a short time ago), νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, Joh_11:8; cf. Kypke at the passage; Vig. ed. Herm., p. 425f with a future, of those future things which are thought of as already begun to be done, Joh_12:31; or of those which will be done instantly, Act_13:11 (here others supply ἐστι; Winers Grammar, § 64, 2 a.); or soon, Act_20:22 (here πορεύομαι merely has inherent future force; cf. Buttmann, § 137, 10 a.). d. with the imperative it often marks the proper or fit time for doing a thing: Mat_27:42; Mar_15:32; Joh_2:8. Hence, it serves to point an exhortation in ἄγε νῦν, come now: Jas_4:13; Jas_5:1 (where it is more correctly written ἄγε νῦν, cf. νῦν [page 431] The classical phrase τὰ νῦν = now, which in the NT is confined to Acts, is found in P Oxy IV. 743 .30 (B.C. 2) where the writer states with reference to a certain Damas καὶ τὰ νῦν ἐπειπέπομφα αὐτὸν πάντα συνλέξαι , and now I have dispatched him to collect them all ( i.e. rents) (Edd.) : cf. BGU IV. 1114 .17 (B.C. 4) τανῦν συγχωρεῖ ὁ Ἵμερος κεκομίσθαι κτλ ., P Oxy IV. 811 ( c. A.D. 1) καὶ τὰ νῦν εἴ σοι φαί [νε ]ται γράψον αὐτῷ . In PSI VI. 609 .10 (iii/B.C.) τό τε παρε̣λ .̣ον ( l. παρελθὸν ?) ἐχφόριον καὶ τ̣ο̣, νῦν ἑτοιμάσας , τὸ νῦν is probably equivalent to τὸ τούτου τοῦ ἔτους ἐχφόριον : see the editor s note. The formula ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν , henceforth, as in Luk_1:48 al. , 2Co_5:16 , is common, e.g. P Oxy III. 479 .6 (A.D. 157) βούλομαι ἀναγραφῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἐπὶ τοῦ ὑπάρχοντός μοι μέρους οἰκίας . . .
