This word, which in its metaphorical sense of newly-converted is confined to Christian literature (cf. 1Ti_3:6 ), is of frequent occurrence in the papyri in the original meaning of newly-planted (cf. Psa. 127꞉ 3 [MT Psa_128:3 ]), e.g. P Ryl II. 138 .9 (A.D. 34) εἰς τὰ νεώ (=ό )φυτα τῶν ἐλαιώνων , into the young plantations in the olive-yards (Edd.), BGU II. 563 i. 9 al. (ii/A.D.) ἀπὸ νεοϕ̣υ̣τ̣[ων , P Tebt II. 311 .18 (A.D. 134) ἐν τῷ λεγω (=ο )μένῳ Νεω (=ο )φύτῳ γύῳ , in the so-called Newly-planted field (Edd.), and P Oxy VI. 909 .16 (A.D. 225) χώματος ἀμπελ [ι ]κοῦ κτήματος νεοφύτου , the embankment of the newly-planted vineyard.
