μουσικός [page 418]
In an action before the Emperor Claudius in which Isidorus, the Gymnasiarch of Alexandria, raises a complaint against King Agrippa, the Emperor taunts Isidorus with the fact that he is the son of a female musician ἀσφαλῶς [ἐ ]κ μουσικῆς εἶ , Ἰσίδωρε , and receives the answer ἐγ ]ὼ μὲν οὔκ εἰμι δοῦλος οὐδὲ μουσικῆς [υἱ ]ός , ἀλλὰ διασήμου πόλεως [Ἀ ]λεξαν [δρ ]εί [ας ] γυμνασίαρχος ( Chrest. 1. 14 iii. 8 ff. ). From P Flor I. 74 .6 (A.D. 181) συμφωνίας πάσης μουσικῶν τε καὶ ἄλλων , P Oxy X. 1275 .9 (iii/A.D.) συμφωνίας αὐλητῶν καὶ μουσικῶν (cf. Rev_18:22 ), T. Grassi (in SAM iii. p. 130) concludes that μουσικοί was not a merely general term, but denoted a special class of performers. Cf. however P Oxy III. 519 .5 (account of public games ii/A.D.) ὑπὲρ μου [σ ]ι [κῆς (δραχμαὶ ) . . .
