Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
μικρός [page 412]
In P Leid N ii. 12 (B.C. 103) (= I. p. 69) we hear of a Νεχούτης μικρός in a context which shows, according to the editor (p. 74), that the reference is to age rather than to stature : see further Deissmann BS p. 144 f. Other exx. are not so clear. P Gen I. 28 .11 (A.D. 136) ἀγ ]οράσαι παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Στοτοήτιος ἐπικαλουμένου Μικροῦ πυρόν , is not encouraging to the meaning junior , though, after all, there is no reason why Stotoetis junior should not be the father of a family. In any case the frequent occurrence of the formula makes it probable that it has a constant meaning : see P Eleph 17 .11 (B.C. 223 222) Πρενέβ̣θιος Ἰστφήνιος καὶ Ψεντεὴς μικρὸς ἀπολέγονται τὴν γῆν κτλ ., P Tebt I. 63 .35 (B.C. 116 115) γεω (ργὸς ) Πετερμοῦθις μι (κρὸς ) Ἀμμενέως , and P Goodsp Cairo 30 vii. μικ . quater other persons of the same name figure in this ledger, twice without description, then Ἀφρ . τέκτονι , ποιμένι Ἀφρ ., and Twice before a lacuna. In P Oxy XIV. 1666 .4 (iii/A.D.) a certain Pausanias writes περὶ τοῦ μεικροῦ Παυσανίου evidently his son stating that he desired to be transferred to cavalry regiment, A similar application of the adj. to children is very common. We may cite, by way of example, P Lond 893 .7 (A.D. 40) (= P Ryl II. p. 381) καλῶς π [οιή ]σ̣ε̣ι̣ς ἐξαυτῆ (ς ) πέμψας μοι τ̣ο̣, ν̣ μεικρόν , please therefore send me the child immediately (Edd.), P Fay 113 .14 (A.D. 100) εἰκθύας ( l. κοστὰ ) τοῦ μικροῦ , 12 drachmas worth of fish for the little one s four-hundredth-day festival (Edd.), P Lond 899 .6 (ii/A.D.) (= III. p. 208) ἔπεμψα τῇ μ̣ικρᾷ ᾠὰ ιβ̄ , I sent twelve eggs to the little one, P Giss I, 78 .7 (ii/A.D.) ἡ μικρά μου Ἡραιδ [ο ]ῦς γράφουσα τῶι πατρὶ ἐμὲ ο̣ὐκ ἀσ̣π̣άζεται κ [α ]ι̣, διὰ τί οὐκ ο̣ἶ̣δα , P Oxy III. 530 .26 (ii/A.D.) . ., which seems to include Thaisous), and ib. 533 .27 (ii/iii A.D.) ἀσπάσασθε τὸν μεικρὸν Σερῆνον καὶ Κοπρέα καὶ το [ὺ ]ς ἡμῶν πάντας κατ᾽ ὄνομα (a grown-up Serenus figures earlier in the letter). Other exx. of the adj. are P Meyer 12 .10 (A.D. 115) οὐλὴ δακτύλῳ μικρῷ χειρὸ (ς ) ἀριστερᾶς , P Giss I. 20 .16 (ii/A.D.) See also for μικρόν τι , as in 2Co_11:1 ; 2Co_11:16 , P Par 47 .3 ( c. πρόσωπόν ) μου πόποτε , and for κατὰ μικρόν P Petr II. 11 (1) .7 (iii/B.C.) (= Selections , p. 8), where Polycrates writes to his father that he does not get his money ἀθροῦν , in a lump sum, but κατὰ μικρόν , in small instalments. For the comparative see Chrest. II. 372 v. 17 (ii/A.D.), where a soldier is described as ἐ [ν ] χώρτῃ καὶ οὗτος ὁ μεικρότερος .
