STRONGS NT 3313: μέροςμέρος, μέρους, τό (μείρομαι to share, receive one's due portion) (from Pindar, Aeschylus, Herodotus down), a part; i. e.:
1. a part due or assigned to one (German Antheil): ἀφαιρεῖν, τό μέρος τίνος (genitive of person) ἀπό or ἐκ τίνος (genitive of the thing), Rev_22:19; ἔχειν μέρος ἐν with the dative of the thing, Rev_20:6; μέρος ἔχειν μετά τίνος (participation in the same thing, i. e.) to have part (fellowship) with one, Joh_13:8; hence, as sometimes in classical Greek (Euripides, Alc. 477 (474)), lot, destiny, assigned to one, Rev_21:8; τιθέναι τό μέρος τίνος τινων, to appoint one his lot with certain persons, Mat_24:51; Luk_12:46.
2. one of the constituent parts of a whole;
a. universally: in a context where the whole and its parts are distinguished, Luk_11:36; Joh_19:23; Rev_16:19; with a genitive of the whole, Luk_15:12; Luk_24:42; where it is evident from the context of what whole it is a part, Act_5:2; Eph_4:16; τό ἕν μέρος namely, τοῦ συνεδρίου, Act_23:6; τοῦ μέρους τῶν Φαρισαίων, of that part of the Sanhedrin which consisted of Pharisees, Act_23:9 (not Lachmann); τά μέρη, with the genitive of a province or country, the divisions or regions which make up the land or province, Mat_2:22; Act_2:10; with the genitive of a city, the region belonging to a city, country around it, Mat_15:21; Mat_16:13; Mar_8:10; τά ἀνωτερικά μέρη, the upper districts (in tacit contrast with τά κατώτερα, and with them forming one whole), Act_19:1; τά μέρη ἐκεῖνα, those regions (which are parts of the country just mentioned, i. e. Adverbial phrases: ἀνά μέρος (see ἀνά, 1), 1Co_14:27; κατά μέρος, severally, part by part, in detail, Heb_9:5 (see κατά, II. 3 a. γ.); μέρος τί (accusative, absolutely) in part, partly, 1Co_11:18 (Thucydides 2, 64; 4, 30; Isocrates, p. 426 d.); ἀπό μέρους, in part, i. e. somewhat, 2Co_1:14; in a measure, to some degree, 2Co_2:5; (Rom_15:24); as respects a part, Rom_11:25 : here and there, Rom_15:15; ἐκ μέρους as respects individual persons and things, severally, individually, 1Co_12:27; in part, partially, i. e. imperfectly, 1Co_13:9; 1Co_13:12; τό ἐκ μέρους (opposed to τό τέλειον) (A. V. that which is in part) imperfect (Luth. well,das Stückwerk), 1Co_13:10. (Green (Critical Note on 2Co_1:14) says "ἀπό μέρους differs in Paul's usage from ἐκ μέρους in that the latter is a contrasted term in express opposition to the idea of a complete whole, the other being used simply without such aim"; cf. Bernhardy (1829) Syntax, p. 230; Meyer on 1Co_12:27.)
b. any particular, German Stück (where the writer means to intimate that there are other matters, to be separated from that which be has specified): ἐν τῷ μέρει τούτῳ, in this particular i. e. in regard to this, in this respect, 1Pe_4:16 R; 2Co_3:10; 2Co_9:3; with a genitive of the thing, Col_2:16 (where see Lightfoot); τοῦτο τό μέρος, namely, τῆς ἐργασίας ἡμῶν (branch of business), Act_19:27, cf. Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
μέρος [page 398]
The varied applications of μέρος , which we find in the NT, can all be illustrated from the vernacular, (1) The meaning of a part assigned to one, as in Rev_22:19 , is seen in P Strass I. 19 .5 (A.D. 105) τοῦ ὑπ̣άρχον̣τ̣ος αὐτῶι μέρ [ο ]υ̣ς̣ ἑνὸς ἀ̣πὸ μερω̣ν ἐννέα , and the Christian P Heid 6 .17 (iv/A.D.) (= Selections , p. 126) παρακαλῶ [ο ]ὖν , δέσποτα , ἵνα μνημον [ε ]ύῃς μοι εἰς τὰς ἁγίας σου εὐχάς , ἵνα δυνηθῶμεν μέρος τῶν (ἁμ )αρτιῶν καθαρίσεως , I beseech you, master, to remember me in your holy prayers, that I may be able (to receive) my part in the cleansing of sins. (2) For μέρος = the constituent part of a whole, as in Luk_11:36 , cf. P Petr II. 13 (3) .2 (B.C. 258 3) τὸ πρὸς νότον [τ ]οῦ ὀχυρώματος τεῖχος , μέρος μέν τι αὐτοῦ πεπτωκός ἐστιν , the wall to the south of the prison, part of it has fallen (Ed.), BGU IV. 1123 .8 (time of Augustus) διαιρεθήσεται εἰς μ̣ε̣[ρη ] ἴσα καὶ ὅμοια τρία , P Ryl II. 145 .14 (A.D. 38) ἔδωκεν πληγὰς πλείους εἰς πᾶν μέρος τοῦ σώματος , and P Hamb I. 54 i. 14 (ii/iii A.D.) ἰς τὰ ἄνω̣ μέρη with reference to the upper reaches of the Nile. Similarly with Mat_15:21 cf. P Leid M i. 8 (ii/B.C.) (= I. p. 59) οἰκίας . . . τῆς οὔσης ἐν ἀπὸ νότου μέρει Διοσπόλεως τῆς μεγάλης , and with Act_23:6 , where the word has the force of party, cf. P Oxy X. 1278 .24 (A.D. 214) ἕκαστον δὲ μέρος π [α ]ραδοῦν [αι ἑ ]κ̣α̣τέρῳ τὸν αὐ [τ ]ὸν περιστερεῶνα , each party is to deliver to the other the said pigeon-house, P Flor I. 47 .17 (A.D. 213 17) where an ἀντικαταλλαγή is written out in four copies εἰς τὸ παρ᾽ ἑκατέρῳ μέρει εἶναι δισσήν , and the late P Lond 1028 .18 (vii/A.D.) (= III. p. 277) τοῦ πρασίνου μέρ (ους ), the green faction. (3) Μέρος in the sense of branch or line of business, as in Act_19:27 (cf. .25 ), is seen in P Flor I. 89 .2 (iii/A.D.) (as amended Berichtigungen , p. 147) δικαιοδο̣[της διέ ]πων τὰ μέρη τῆς διοικήσεως . (4) For the derived sense of matter ( 2Co_3:10 ; 2Co_9:3 ) cf. P Ryl II. 127 .21 (A.D. 29) διὸ ἀξιῶι συντάξαι τῷ τῆ (ς ) Εὐημερείας ἀρχεφόδωι ἀναζητῆσαι ὑπὲρ τοῦ μέρους , wherefore I request you to order the archephodus of Euhemeria to inquire into the matter, and similarly ib. 140 .17 (A.D. 36) : see also Menandrea , p. 69 .107 τὸ τοιουτὶ μέρος ( all this kind of thing ) | οὐκ ἀκριβῶς δεῖ φρ [άσαι ] σοι , and p. 10 .17 . (5) From this again we have the meaning nature, as in P Tor II. 8 .35 (ii/B.C.) καθ᾽ ὃ ἂν μέρος ἢ εἶδος παρασυνγραφῆς , quaecumque demum fuerit natura aut species infractionis (Ed.), see the note on p. 58, apud Polybium τοῦτο τὸ μέρος saepe est hoc, haec res ; rei ergo intimam substantiam ac rationem significat. (6) Adverbial phrases are very common, e.g. (a) ἀπὸ μέρους ( 2Co_2:5 ) in BGU IV. 1201 .15 (A.D. 2) εὕροσαν ἀπὸ μέρους τὰς θύρας κατακεκαυμέν [ας , they found the doors partly burnt down, P Tebt II. 402 .2 (A.D. 172) λόγος ἔργου ἀπὸ μέρ [ο ]υς γενομένου πρὸς τῷ πλινθουργίῳ , account of the work partially done at the brick-factory (Edd.), and P Oxy XIV. 1681 .9 (iii/A.D.) ἀπὸ μέρους πεῖραν , partial proof ; (b) ἐκ μέρους ( 1Co_12:27 ) in P Lond 1166 .14 (A.D. 42 ) (= III. p. 105) ἔν τι̣[νι ἡμέ ]ρᾳ ἢ ἐγ μέρους ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ , BGU II. 538 .35 (A.D. 100 101) παραδό (= ώ )σομεν τὸν κλῆρον ὡς καὶ ἐγ μερους παρειλήφαμεν , and P Ryl II. 233 .6 (ii/A.D.) τὰ μέλαθρα . . . ἐκ μέρους σήμερον ήρμολόγηται , the beams have to-day been partly fixed ; (c) κατὰ μέρος ( Heb_9:5 ) in P Tebt I. 6 .24 (B.C. 140 139) τῶν κατὰ μέρος ἐθνῶν , the several associations, ib. II. 382 .24 (B.C. 30 A.D. I) ὀμνύο . . ποιήσειν πάντ [α ] τὰ [κ ]ατὰ δύο μέρηι ἀπὸ μερῶν πέντε ἐπειμερείζειν δὲ . . ., I swear that I will perform all that pertains to the two shares out of five shares and will divide . . .. : cf. Cic. ad Att. xiii. 22. 2 τὰ κατὰ μέρος , of a detailed account. MGr μέρος , part, side, region, locality.
