ἀναδείκνυμι: 1 aorist ἀνέδειξα (imperative ἀνάδειξον; from Sophocles down); to lift up anything on high and exhibit it for all to behold (German aufzeigen); hence, to show accurately, clearly, to disclose what was hidden (2Ma_2:8; 2Ma_6:1-31): Act_1:24 (show which of these two thou hast chosen). Hence, ἀναδείκνυμι τινα, to proclaim anyone as elected to an office, to announce as appointed (king, general, etc., messenger): Luk_10:1 (2Ma_9:14; 2Ma_9:23; 2Ma_9:25 2Ma_10:11 2Ma_14:12; 2Ma_14:26; 1Es_1:35 1Es_8:23; Polybius 4, 48, 3; 51, 3; Diodorus 1:66; 13, 98; Plutarch, Caes. 37, etc.; Herodian, 2, 12, 5 (3), others). Frequent in inscrr., in a sacrificial sense, e.g. Syll 553 .14 (iii/ii B.C.) ἀναδεικνύωσι τῷ Διί (ταῦρον ). Nearer to the sense of Act_1:24 is the astrological phrase in Vettius Valens, p. 119 .25 ἐὰν δὲ Ζεὺς μαρτυρήσῃ Κρόνῳ , νόμιμος γάμος ἀναδειχθήσεται ἢ καί τινας ἐξευγενίσουσιν . Note Syll 329 .12 (B.C. 86) κέκρικεν ἀναδεῖξαι τὸν πρὸς Μιθραδάτην πόλεμον , which comes near our declare war : so in OGIS 441 .49 ex suppl. ).
