1. to make great, magnify (Vulg.magnifico): τινα or τί, properly, of dimension, Mat_23:5 (here A. V. enlarge); passive to increase: of bodily stature, ἐμεγαλύνθη τό παιδάριον, 1Sa_2:21; so in a figure, 2Co_10:15, of Paul, that his apostolic efficiency among the Corinthians may increase more and more and have more abundant results (others refer this to 2; see Meyer (edited by Heinrici) in the place cited). metaphorically, to make conspicious: Luk_1:58 (on which see ἔλεος, 2 a.).
2. to deem or declare great, i. e. to esteem highly, to extol, laud, celebrate: Luk_1:16; Act_5:13; Act_10:46; Act_19:17. (often so in classical Greek also); passive equivalent to to get glory and praise: ἐν τίνι, in a thing, Php_1:20.

With the use of this verb in the pass, in Php_1:20 (cf. LXX Psa. 39:17 [MT Psa_40:16 ], Psa_69:5 [MT Psa_70:4 ]) in the sense of get glory and praise, cf. the Christian letter P Oxy XII. 1592 .8 (iii/iv A.D.) where a woman writes to her father αἰδε (= ἐδε ) ξά [μ ]ην σου τὰ γράμματα , κ (ύρι )έ μου π (άτε )ρ , καὶ πάνυ ἐμεγαλύνθην καὶ ἠγαλλείασα ὅτει τοιοῦτός μου π (ατ )ὴρ τὴν μνήμην ποιεῖται . In MGr μεγαλαίνω and μεγαλώνω are both found.
