κατακόπτω [page 327]
For this verb in the derived sense of beat, bruise, as in Mar_5:5 (cf. Wycliffe betynge hymsilf, and see Field Notes , p. 27), we may cite P Lips I. 37 .20 (A.D. 389) ἔπειτα κατέκοψα [ν ] π̣[ληγ ]αῖς αὐτὸν κατά τ [ε ] τῶν σκελῶν καὶ κατὰ τῶν ἄλλων μελω̣ [ν ] τοῦ σώματος , and the illiterate PSI IV. 313 .10 (iii/iv A.D.) πλῆγές μαι κατέκοψεν καθ᾽ ὅλου τοῦ σώματος . The editor suggests a new word κατακοπτικόν in the magic P Lond 121 .430 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 98), but the line in which it occurs has been intentionally obliterated, and the context is wholly wanting.
