ἐξαιτέω, ἐξαίτω: 1 aorist middle ἐξητησαμην; to ask from, demand of (cf. ἐκ, VI. 2). Middle to ask from (or beg) for oneself: τινα, to ask that one be given up to one from the power of another in both senses, either for good, to beg one from another, ask for the pardon, the safety, of someone (Xenophon, an. 1, 1, 3; Demosthenes, p. 546, 22; Plutarch, Per. 32; Palaeph. 41, 2); or in a bad sense, for torture, for punishment (Plutarch, mor., p. 417 d. de defect. orac. 14; in secular authors often with this sense in the active); so of Satan asking the apostles out of the power and keeping of God to be tried by afflictions (allusion being made to Job_1:1-12): Luk_22:31 (Test xii. Patr., p. 729 (test. Benj. § 3) ἐάν τά πνεύματα τοῦ Βελιάρ εἰς πᾶσαν πονηρίαν θλίψεως ἐξαιτησωνται ὑμᾶς).

Field ( Notes , p. 76) takes the aor. mid. ἐξῃτήσατο in Luk_22:31 as indicating the success of the requisition, and paraphrases, Satan hath procured you ( obtained you by asking, RV marg.) to be given up to him ; cf. Syll 330 .15 (i/B.C.) ὅτε ἰδίαν χάριν ἐξαιτησάμενοι Πόπλιόν τε Αὐτρώνιον καὶ Λεύκιον Μαρκίλιον . See for the act. ib. 168 .29 (iv/B.C.) δι᾽ ὅπερ ἐξαιτή [σαντος αὐτὸν (Λυκοῦργ̣ον ) Ἀλεξάνδρου ὁ δ ]ῆμος ἀπέγνω μὴ συνχωρῆ [σαι μηδὲ λόγον ποιεῖσθαι τῆς ] ἐξαιτήσεως , and BGU III. 944 .8 (iv/v A.D.) ἐξῄτησας τήν μισθαποχήν ( receipt for pay ).
