Thayer's Greek Lexicon

ἔνι equivalent to ἔνι, the accent being thrown back, same as ἐν, used adverbially (Winer's Grammar, § 50, 7 N. 2) for ἐνεστι, is in, is among, has place, is present (Homer, Odyssey 21, 218; Thucydides 2, 40): Gal_3:28 (three times); Col_3:11; Jas_1:17; with addition of ἐν ὑμῖν, 1Co_6:5 (where Rec. ἐστιν); in secular authors from Sophocles and Thucydides on very often, it can be, is possible, is lawful; (here some would place James, the passage cited). The opinion of many (e. g. Fritzsche on Mark, p. 642; Meyer on Galatians, the passage cited; cf. Ellicott ibid.) that ἔνι is a contracted form for ἐνεστι is opposed by the like use of παρά, ἀνά, which can hardly be supposed to be contracted from πάρεστι, ἀνεστι; cf. Krüger, § 9, 11, 4; Winers Grammar, 80 (77); Göttling, Lehre v., Accent etc., p. 380; (Chandler § 917f; Buttmann, 72 (64); Lob. Path. Element. ii. 315).

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἔνι [page 215] BGU IV. 1141 .8 (B.C. 14) ὅτι δὲ ἐν τῇ πρώτῃ μου ἐπιστολῇ οὐθὲν ἁμάρτημα ἔνει ( l. ἔνι ), P Oxy IX. 1218 .5 (iii/A.D.) οὐδὲν δύσκολον ἔνι ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας σου . In P Iand 11 .8 (iii/A.D.) ὅτι ἀπρ ]ε̣πιά ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἔνι , the editor renders οὐκ ἔνι fieri non potest, and compares P Strass I. 35 .19 (iv/v A.D.) φρόντ [ι ]σόν μου δὲ περὶ τῶν ἐλεω̣ν̣ . . ., ἐπιδὴ ἐν Ἀλεξανδρίᾳ οὐκ ἔνει . The above exx. show ἔνι = ἔνεστι , and practically equivalent in meaning to the simple ἐστί , cf. Sir_37:2 , 4Ma_4:22 , and see Thackeray Gr. i. p. 257. The form ἔνι is regarded as the prep. ἐνί , the Ionic form of ἐν , strengthened by a more vigorous accent, like ἔπι , πάρα , and used with an ellipsis of the substantive verb (Lightfoot on Gal_3:28 ; cf. Hort on Jas_1:17 ). See also Boisacq, p. 247 n. .2 , Dieterich Untersuch. p. 225.
