1. a Greek by nationality, whether a native of the main land or of the Greek islands or colonies: Act_18:17 Rec.; Ἕλληνες τέ καί βάρβαροι, Rom_1:14.
2. in a wider sense the name embraces all nations not Jews that made the language, customs, and learning of the Greeks their own; so that where Ἕλληνες are opposed to Jews, the primary reference is to a difference of religion and worship: Joh_7:35 (cf. Meyer at the passage); Act_11:20 G L T Tr (cf. B. D. American edition, p. 967); Act_16:1; Act_16:3; (Act_21:28); 1Co_1:22-23 Rec.; Gal_2:3 (Josephus, Antiquities 20, 11, 2); Ἰουδαῖοι τέ καί Ἕλληνες, and the like: Act_14:1; Act_18:4; Act_19:10; Act_19:17; Act_20:21; Rom_1:16; Rom_2:9-10; Rom_3:9; Rom_10:12; 1Co_1:24; 1Co_10:32; 1Co_12:13; Gal_3:28; Col_3:11. The word is used in the same wide sense by the Greek church Fathers, cf. Otto on Tatian, p. 2; (Sophocles' Lexicon, under the word). The Ἕλληνες spoken of in Joh_12:20 and Act_17:4 are Jewish proselytes from the Gentiles; see προσήλυτος, 2. (Cf. B. D. under the word etc. (especially American edition).)

In the ordinance of Euergetes II. P Tebt I. 5 .168 (B.C. 118) Ἕλληνας = probably. . .all non-Egyptian soldiers, whether Macedonians, Cretans, Persians, etc. The editors compare the opposition between Greeks and Egyptians later in the same decree. This illustrates excellently the familiar antithesis between Jews and Greeks, so pronounced in Mar_7:26 , to which an exact parallel is quoted below.
