διατελέω, διατέλω; to bring thoroughly to an end, accomplish, (cf. διά, C. 2); with the addition of τόν βίον, τόν χρόνον, etc., it is joined to participles or adjectives and denotes the continuousness of the act or state expressed by the prcp. or adjective (as in Herodotus 6, 117; 7, 111; Plato, Apology, p. 31 a.); oftener, however, without the accusative it is joined with the same force simply to the participles or adjectives: thus, ἄσιτοι διατελεῖτε, ye continue fasting, constantly fast, Act_27:33 (so ἀσφαλεστερος (others, ἀσφαλεστατος) διατελει, Thucydides 1, 34; often in Xenophon; Winers Grammar, 348 (326); (Buttmann, 304 (261))).

B.C. 250) διατελο [ῦ ]μεν τοὺς φόρους εὐτακτοῦντες εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν διὰ τὴν παρ᾽ ὑμῶν σκε̣[π ]η̣ν , we have long administered with regularity the revenues of the temple on account of your protection (Edd.), P Lond 42 .4 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 30, Selections , p. 9) εἴηι ἂν τοῖς θεοῖς εὐχομένη διατελῶ , it would be as I am continually praying to the gods, BGU I. 287 .7 (a libellus A.D. 250) (= Selections , p. 115) καὶ ἀεὶ θύων τοῖς θεοῖς διετέλεσα , P Oxy IX. 1204 .16 (A.D. 299) διετέλεσεν γοῦν ὑπηρετούμενος τῇ σῇ τοῦ ἐμοῦ κυρίου τάξει . In P Oxy I 120 verso .10 (iv/A.D.) we have μὴ ἆρα αἱ ἡμέραι τὰ πάντα διατελοῦσι ; Can time accomplish everything after all? (Edd.). From the inscrr. it is sufficient to quote Syll 393 .4 (Roman) which also shows the adj. διατελοῦς ἀρετῆς ἕνεκεν [ἧς ἔχων ] διατελεῖ . . . The standing intransitive use with participle, recognisable in all but one of the instances quoted above, can be illustrated to any extent.

διατελέω fut. -τελέσω attic -τελῶ "to bring quite to an end, accomplish", Eur. , Xen. absol., mostly with a part. added, "to continue being or doing" so and so, Hdt. , Plat. :—but the part. is sometimes omitted, δ. πρόθυμος "to continue" zealous, Thuc. : also simply "to continue, go on, persevere", Plat. : "to live on", id=Plat.
