Αἴγυπτος, , ἡ (always without the article, Buttmann, 87 (76); Winers Grammar, § 18, 5 a.), the proper name of a well-known country, Egypt: Mat_2:13; Act_2:10; Heb_3:16, etc.; more fully γῆ Αἴγυπτος, Act_7:36 (not L WH Tr text), Act_7:40; Act_13:17; Heb_8:9; Jud_1:5 (Exo_5:12; Exo_6:26, etc.; 1Ma_1:19; Bar_1:19 f, etc.); ἡ γῆ Αἴγυπτος, Act_7:11; ἐν Αἰγύπτου namely, γῆ, Heb_11:26 Lachmann, but cf. Bleek at the passage; Buttmann, 171 (149); (Winer's Grammar, 384 (359)). In Rev_11:8 Αἴγυπτος is figuratively used for Jerusalem, i. e. for the Jewish nation viewed as persecuting Christ and his followers, and so to be likened to the Egyptians in their ancient hostility to the true God and their endeavors to crush his people.
