Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

βραδύς [page 117] The adverb is common in signatures with reference to those who were unskilled in writing e.g. BGU II. 543 .17 (B.C. 27) ἔγραφεν ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ Ζήνων Ζήνωνος ἀξιωθεὶς διὰ τὸ βραδύτερα αὐτὸν γράφειν , P Fay 97 .37 (A.D. 78) ἔγραψεν ὑπὲρ [αὐτ ]οῦ βραδέω (ς ) γράφοντος , BGU I. 69 .19 (A.D. 120) (= Chrest. II. 142) ἔ [γ ]ραψα ὑπὲρ α [ὐ ]τοῦ ἐρωτηθὶς διὰ τὸ βρα [δ ]ύτερα αὐτὸν γράφιν , αὐτοῦ γράφοντος [τὸ ὄ ]νομα , and P Lond 1164 ( k ) .23 (A.D. 212) (= III. p. 167) ἔγραψα ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα τῆς ὑπογραφῆς , αὐτοῦ ὕστερ [ο ]ν ὑπογράφοντος βραδέως upon which follow the painful uncials of Philantinous Demetrias. So the Ptolemaic Ostr 1027 .9 διὰ τὸ βραδύτερα αὐτὸν γρά (φειν ). Outside this special use, in OGIS 502 .17 (ii/A.D.) we have τοῦ ] βράδειον ἀπολαῦσαι τὴν πόλιν τῆς [προσηκούσης προσόδου . The positive adv. occurs in P Oxy VIII. 1088 .50 (i/A.D. a medical receipt) βρα [δέως ] πινέτωι μετὰ γλυκέως ἢ μέλι̣τ̣ο̣[ς , to be drunk slowly with raisin wine or honey (Ed.) It is curious that we cannot illustrate the adj. from our sources, while the adv. is so common. Syll 221 .12 (latter part of iii/B.C.) has εἴς τε τοὺς μισθοὺς [τοῖς ] βραδέσιν , eis qui non in tempore veniebant (Ed.). MGr βραδειά and (neut.) βράδυ = evening : cf. βραδύνω ad fin.
