βορρᾶς [page 114]
The contracted form, which is found in the two NT occurrences of this word ( Luk_13:29 , Rev_21:13 ), is almost universal in the Ptolemaic papyri, e.g. P Lille I. 1 recto .4 (B.C. 259 8) ἀπὸ νότου εἰς βορρᾶν , P Petr I. 21 .11 and 18 (B.C. 237) ἀπὸ δὲ βορρᾶ , P Par 15 .16 (B.C. 120) ἀπὸ βορρᾶ τοῦ δρόμου τοῦ [ἄ ]γοντος ἐπὶ ποταμὸν τῆς μεγίστης θεᾶς Ἥρας , and other examples in Mayser Gr. p. 252; but P Hib I. 27 .59 (a calendar, B.C. 301 240) βορέαι πνείουσιν ὀρνιθίαι , the north winds which bring the birds are blowing. P Leid W xix. 24 has βορεας , some five centuries later, but it is always rare. Cf. Job_26:7 , Sir_43:17 ; Sir_43:20 . Priene 99 .19 ( c. B.C. 100) has τῆς στοᾶς τοῦ βαρέου : cf. Syll 552 .70 (latter half of ii/A.D.) εἰς τὴν παραστάδα τὴν ἀπὸ δυσμῆς τῆς στοᾶς τῆς βορεί [ας with corresponding adjective. From inscrr. cf. OGIS 176 .8 (ii/i B.C.) ἐπὶ βορρᾶν , ib. 178 .10 (ii/i B.C.) ἐπὶ βορᾶν , Michel 1357 .9 (B.C. 300 299) βορρᾶθεν . The adj. βορινός occurs in P Oxy I. 43 verso i. 10 (after A.D. 295) ῥ (ύμῃ ) τῇ βοριν [ῇ ] ἐκκλησίᾳ North Church St, ib. III. 498 .8 (ii/A.D.), al. ; but in ib. VIII. 1112 .22 (A.D. 188) βορ̄ [ι ]νοῖς implies ρρ , and so P Ryl II. 157 .12 (A.D. 135). Thumb, Hellen. pp. 56, 65, notes that βορρᾶς is a Dorism in the Κοινή .
