Jim Shaddix (1960–2025) was an American preacher, professor, and author whose passion for expository preaching and pastoral mentorship left a lasting mark on evangelical Christianity. Born in Alabama, he came to faith at age 9, later reflecting on how the gospel’s truth shaped his life, though a youthful disillusionment with hypocritical preachers drove him to pursue authenticity in ministry. With a BS from Jacksonville State University, an M.Div. and D.Min. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, he pastored churches across Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Colorado. In 2012, he joined Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) as Professor of Preaching, holding the W.A. Criswell Chair of Expository Preaching until his death, while also serving as a Senior Fellow for the Center for Preaching and Pastoral Leadership. Married to Debra, with three children and eleven grandchildren, his family life fueled his focus on discipling young leaders. Shaddix’s ministry emphasized Spirit-empowered, Christ-centered preaching, influencing thousands through his teaching at SEBTS, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (where he was Dean of the Chapel), and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He authored books like The Passion-Driven Sermon and Decisional Preaching, and co-wrote Power in the Pulpit with Jerry Vines, advocating that sermons demand a response to the gospel. A sought-after speaker, he mentored countless pastors, often memorizing Scripture and modeling humility—once found weeping in prayer for his children. Diagnosed with brain cancer in 2024, he died in 2025, leaving a legacy of integrity and faithfulness, celebrated by peers like David Platt and Danny Akin for his unwavering devotion to God’s Word and the church.
