Gilbert Beebe (November 25, 1800 – May 2, 1881) was an American preacher, editor, and hymn writer whose ministry within the Primitive Baptist movement shaped its theology and practice across the 19th century. Born in Norwich, Connecticut, to David Beebe and Eunice Case, he grew up in a modest family, joining the Baptist Church at Norwich at age 11 and baptized by Elder John Stipp. Largely self-educated, he moved to New York City in 1816, where he joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, was licensed to preach in 1818, and began itinerant ministry across several states. Beebe’s preaching career took root with his ordination in 1823 at Ramapo Baptist Church in New York, followed by pastorates at New Vernon, New York (1826–1881), and churches in Virginia and Washington, D.C., totaling over 10,000 sermons in 63 years. A fierce advocate for Old School Baptist doctrine, he founded and edited Signs of the Times (1832–1881), opposing New School Baptist innovations, and compiled The Baptist Hymn Book (1858). Married to Phebe Ann Cunningham in 1823, with whom he had twelve children—including Gilbert, Harriet, and George—he passed away at age 80 in Middletown, New York.
