E.A. Johnston warns that many in the church are spiritually dead 'walking dead' who need genuine regeneration through Christ to truly live.
In 'The Walking Dead Are in Your Town,' E.A. Johnston challenges believers to examine their spiritual condition, warning that many in the church are merely 'walking dead' without true life in Christ. Using vivid imagery and key scriptures, Johnston contrasts the life-giving power of Jesus with the deadness of sin. This evangelistic sermon calls listeners to genuine repentance and faith, emphasizing that salvation is found only through Christ.

There are some folks today who really believe that zombies are going to come out of the graves and take over society, that a zombie apocalypse is probable, and even the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom did a zombie study and concurred that a zombie apocalypse would wipe out humankind in a hundred days, that the walking dead will stagger down Main Street in your town sooner than you realize. Well, I've got news for you, friends. The walking dead are here already, and you can find some of these zombies in your local church.
One may even be animated behind the pulpit, all excited and waving his arms, but he's dead anyway. That there are zombies in the church is a case I can argue from scripture, and I present my evidence to you. There are two verses of scripture I will present before you today, friends.
The first is John 14, 6, where Jesus makes a declaration about himself. He says, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me.
The second verse is found in Ephesians 2, 1, which is a declaration about man. And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins. So we have two contrasts here between God and man.
One has life, the other death. One is a pure fountainhead from which all living waters flow. One is a putrefying corpse with one foot in the grave.
A man apart from life in Christ is a dead man walking dead in trespasses and sins. And I fear there are many today in our churches who just went through the motions trying to save themselves by joining a church and believing church membership was salvation. They just walked in now to make a decision for Jesus and have never been awakened to their lost condition, never been convicted of sin, and know nothing of a work of grace upon the heart that God performs in regeneration.
They are yet dead in sin. They are the walking dead in our churches today. These religious zombies comprise much of the membership in our churches today.
They are the walking dead who do not possess life and Christ. All they have to show is a church membership and an empty religious profession. And some of these poor souls graduated seminary and are propped up behind pulpits and spew out a message of death because that's their experience.
But there's a crossroad between life and death. At a place called Calvary, Jesus came into the world doing good. He healed the sick and gave sight to the blind.
He fed the hungry and made the lame to walk again. Jesus even raised the dead to life. Yet what happened? Man cried away with him and nailed him to a cross.
The cross is the place where man sought to get rid of him. Yet by his death, the cross becomes a place where his saving power flows out to all who come in repentance, confessing they are sinners, and own him as their Lord and Savior. And in John 14 6, Jesus answers the three greatest questions of the human heart.
How can I be saved? Jesus says, I am the way. How can I be sure? Jesus says, I am the truth. How can I be satisfied? Jesus says, I am the life.
Christ is life to a person dead in trespasses and sins. You must get to Christ, friend, and get under his blood for pardon of sin to have eternal life. In John 6 36, Jesus declared, I am the bread of life.
He that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. The gospel is for the hungry, the weary, and the thirsty. Are you hungry for God? Are you weary of your sins? Are you thirsty for Christ? Then come.
Christ is the bread of life. He invites poor sinners to come to him and believe on him. The duty required is to come to Christ, and he has a pure gospel promise to all who come.
And him that cometh to me, I will and no wise cast out. Come to Christ, friend. He is life abundant.
Let us pray.
