Jesus spoke often about hell and its torments. Jesus described hell as a bottomless pit, a region of outer darkness, a place where the worm dieth not, a place of punishment for sin, where flames burn endlessly for all eternity. He said it was a region of wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Wailing speaks of grief and loss. Gnashing of teeth signifies great anger and regret. We get a sense of the shock of landing in hell, quite unprepared and unexpectedly, by the verse from Isaiah which states, The sinners in Zion are afraid.
Fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites, who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire, who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings. The title of my message this evening, friends, is One Hour in Hell Will Change You Forever, because I want you to come with me, on a visit to hell, as I walk over to that bottomless pit and lift the lid off of it, and we descend together in spirit to tour this nether world. We are unseen by the damned and untouched by their sufferings, but we can see them, we can hear them, we can sense what they sense.
In your mind's eye, I want you to descend with me now to that nether world of smoke and heat and intense darkness. There will be familiar figures as they appear to us, and we will see them very clearly. They are the people that you knew in life.
Their faces appear before you, one by one, your former co-workers, your neighbors, and your friends that you knew in life. There they are, there they appear, their familiar faces pass before you. Relatives appear before you as well, as you see them in their agonies.
Look at them suffer the miseries of a burning hell. Listen to their cries and shrieks and pleas. Look at their twisted faces locked in a grimace of pain and suffering.
Listen to the noise of the damned until your ears ring with their cries. Each of these tortured souls share a common denominator with you. Not only did you know them in life, but they are individuals whom you failed to witness to on earth.
You never told them about Jesus. You never shared the gospel with them. Oh, one hour in hell will change you forever.
Never again will you shrink from witnessing for Christ. Never again will you fail to hand out a gospel track to a stranger. Never again will you keep Jesus selfishly to yourself as you smuggle your soul to heaven while others perish around you.
One hour in hell will change you forever. Look at them now, hear them now. Oh, why, why, why didn't you tell me about Jesus who among us shall dwell with this devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
