There are folks tonight walking all over this town. They are looking for a bar to get drunk in. They are looking for a partner to fornicate with.
They are determined tonight to be reckless in sin. They believe themselves to be brave men and women because they are not afraid of God and they are not afraid of eternity and they are not afraid of the judgment because they are so in love with their sins that they are greedy for hell. And that's the title of my message this evening, friends.
It's a terrible message because it's a terrible thing to be greedy for hell. Some folks don't believe in literal hell and if they do, they don't fear it because they believe God wouldn't send them to hell because they have some finer qualities in them. They will help a stranger in need.
They will mow the lawn for a sick neighbor. There's enough good in them, they believe, to keep them out of hell. In their minds, hell is only for the really evil sociopaths like Hitler or serial killers.
And the fact that they don't fear hell is because they don't reckon they will ever land up there. So by that very belief, they live their lives in the gratification of self-recklessly sinning because they are greedy for hell. Our Texas evening, friends, explains why they are greedy for hell.
It is found in Ecclesiastes chapter 8 and verse 11, which states, Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. That explains why the bars are full tonight. That explains why the strip clubs are full tonight.
That explains why there's enough booze they'll be drunk in this beach community this evening to drown the entire city. This text from God's word explains why there'll be so much fighting and swearing and fornicating tonight because the hearts of unregenerate men and women are fully set in them to do evil. The Bible describes the condition of unregenerate man in the book of Job by showing how abominable and filthy he really is in his natural loss condition when it says, How much more abominable and filthy is man with drink of iniquity like water? Tonight, friends, in this city and all across this nation, there is enough sin taking place for God to destroy the entire country.
Drunkenness and stealing and robberies and murders and adultery and fornication and perversion is going on in your town tonight because men and women are greedy for hell because they love their sins and don't fear God because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily. That's why their hearts are fully set on doing evil this evening because they know they can sin all they want to and get away with it. They are drunk on booze and high on drugs and in the arms of their lover tonight and they sin with abandon and they are reckless in their sins because they are greedy for hell.
But no one ever told them the truth about sin, that the soul that sinneth will surely die, that God is angry with the wicked every day. They have never heard a preacher preach from the text from Malachi 4, 1, which declares the end of the wicked. For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall be stubble.
And the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. They are greedy for hell and hell is where they will go when they leave this earth by death. I used to work in a grocery store when I was in high school and one of my duties was to take the cardboard boxes that the produce came in and break them down with a box cutter, stack them up, and then carry them to a cast iron furnace in the back of the store and burn them.
I'll never forget the heat of that furnace as long as I live. When I pulled open that heavy cast iron door, white-hot flames would twist and crackle. As the skin of my face was singed by that force of heat, it was powerfully hot.
Hell is a burning region that will burn with intensity of a smoking furnace, fueled by the wrath of God on sinners. Those that are enjoying their sins as I preach this evening will die in their sins and be cast into that devil's hell. They are greedy for hell now and the devil is greedy for their lost souls.
And as they burn in their lusts right now, they will surely burn in hell forever. The only hope they have is that God will get a hold of them by his spirit and bring them under conviction of sin and make them tremble as a hell-scared sinner who needs a savior from sin. That savior's name is Jesus Christ and he died for sinners on a bloody cross.
Are you a sinner, friend? Are you in need of a savior for sin? Do you want pardon for sin so you won't end up in that house of horrors called hell? Come to Christ and believe on him and repent before it's too late. Seek ye the Lord while he may be found. Call ye upon him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts. And let him return unto the Lord and he will have mercy upon him. And to our God for he will abundantly pardon.
Let us pray.
