I'm a big believer in the power and influence of Christian literature, having devoted the better part of my life to produce it. I've been asked from time to time how to find my published works. Well, this list I'm providing today, friends, is a summary of the books God has been pleased to allow me to write through the years.
Every book mentioned can be found on the internet, and may I say this, I have never, ever taken a dime from royalties from my books, but redirected those funds back to further foreign missions, to spread the gospel, and to print and distribute Bibles in other languages. Here, now, is a comprehensive list of my publications, and a brief overview of each. I pray that it's helpful.
Number one, A Heart Awake, the authorized biography of J. Sidlow Baxter, Baker Books, foreword by Adrian Rogers, prefaced by Stephen Olford. Dr. Baxter was a prolific Christian author, and his Bible commentary explored the book, and his devotional, Awake My Heart, each sold over a million copies. His preaching ministry was international and far-reaching.
Number two, No Turning Back, Gospel Folio Press. This is a book on discipleship, which William MacDonald encouraged me to write, with the sage advice, take the gloves off, and don't state the obvious. Number three, Know the Book, Gospel Folio Press, is a survey of each book of the Bible, written for Bible study or teaching.
This book was translated into Swahili, and drop-shipped into the heart of the Congo. Number four, Are You in the Book of Life, Gospel Folio Press. This is an evangelistic booklet, geared for soul winning.
Number five, The Master's Plan, Gospel Folio Press, a ten-week devotional workbook for individual or group study, unfolding God's blueprint for your life. Number six, Walking with God, Gospel Folio Press, forward by Ted Randall, where he states, be prepared to be challenged concerning your own walk with God. Number seven, Return to Me, Gospel Folio Press.
This is a book on repentance, and a necessity to return to God. Number eight, Realities of Revival, Gospel Folio Press, forward by Stephen Olford. Dr. Olford was my homiletical mentor and colleague, and he took this manuscript on revival with him on his last vacation, to edit it before his home going.
He died before it was published. Number nine, The Church in Revival, Gospel Folio Press, forward by Richard Owen Roberts, who writes, I beg you, as you read this book by E.A. Johnston, that you understand that revival is our only hope. Number ten, A Call to Revival, Gospel Folio Press, forward by Colin Peckham, who writes, This book is a serious call to holy living, to repentance, to total commitment, and to prayer in the Holy Ghost.
May God use it for his glory. Number eleven, Olford on Scroggie, Gospel Folio Press. This book was co-written with Stephen Olford, as he comments about his Bible training under his homiletical mentor, Dr. Graham F. Scroggie.
I had the supreme pleasure of going over Graham Scroggie's handwritten sermons and outlines, which are in the possession of Olford Ministries. In this book, Stephen Olford talks about the golden hammer that was taught to him by Graham Scroggie in sermon preparation. It's worth the price of the book.
This was the last book Stephen Olford wrote, and he died before it was published. Number twelve, Sermons for Revival, Revival Literature. This book contains thirty sermons that I preached on revival.
The photo on the cover shows me standing in the pulpit where George Whitefield preached his very first sermon that drove fifteen people mad. It's the church, St. Mary the Crypt, in Gloucester, England. Number thirteen, George Whitefield, the definitive biography in two volumes.
First printing was in England, with Tentmaker Publications. Second printing in America, with Revival Literature. J.I. Packer wrote the foreword, and Richard Owen Roberts wrote the preface.
In the foreword, J.I. Packer writes, If you care about the glory of God in the salvation of souls, you'll find this book a tonic. By the way, friends, Packer's well-written foreword is worth the price of the book. Number fourteen, Azahel Nettleton, Revival Literature.
Azahel Nettleton was the primary figure of the Second Great Awakening, and this definitive biography of this eminent evangelist was a labor of love as I traveled to over sixty sites and four states where Nettleton's ministry saw glorious revival. The foreword is by John Thornberry, and the preface by Richard Owen Roberts, who was the main one to encourage me to write this in-depth biography on Nettleton. J.I. Packer wrote in his endorsement of the book, And may I add, friends, Nettleton, if he had been alive today, he absolutely would have cringed at his far-reaching insight and predictions as to where the methodology of Charles Finney would take us.
It's a great read for those who care about evangelism and how New England theology deteriorated in that time period. Number fifteen, God's Hitchhike Evangelist, the biography of Rolf Barnard, Revival Literature, foreword by Bob Dume. I can honestly say that I learned the gospel from listening to hundreds of sermons by Rolf Barnard, and this biography on his mightily used life should be read by all preachers who care about the souls of man.
Barnard saw great revival where his preaching shook entire communities. It's an interesting read and an interesting preacher. Number sixteen, Why God Used Stephen F. Olford, Union University Press, is a tribute to Dr. Olford's International Preaching Ministry.
Well, I hope, friends, that you have found this list helpful and that the spread of Christian literature will be accompanied by your prayers.
