Text

JESUS was born. Never had there been such a night.

Jesus was born of a Virgin. If not, we face the blasphemous alternative, the slanderous implication that Mary was guilty of immorality and Jesus was illegitimate. Perish the thought! To deny the virgin birth is to impugn the veracity of Scripture and to undermine the whole scheme of salvation. The Apostle's Creed states clearly, 'Conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary.' The normal laws of biology were either suspended or transcended. 'With God nothing shall be impossible' (Luke 1:34,37). His birth was a special divine act, a supernatural event, an intervention of God.

Jesus was born without sin. He was called 'the holy child Jesus' (Acts 4:27). He asked, 'Which of you convinceth me of sin?' John 8:46). He said to His disciples. `The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in Me' John 14:30). 'He is without sin' (Heb. 4: 15), He was 'holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners' (Heb. 7:26). He is the sinless Son of God and only as such could He effect our salvation.

Jesus was born to die. Because He had no sin He was not under the sentence of death. He need not submit Himself to death. No man could take His life from Him (John 10:17,18). But He laid down His life. The purpose of His birth was His death. He was born to die. It was the fulfilment of a divine plan devised in eternity. 'The Son of Man is come to give His life a ransom for many' (Matt. 20:28). The Via Dolorosa stretched back into eternity. He was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world' (Rev 13:8).

He came from heaven and returned to heaven, but now there is a difference; He carries with Him a glorified human body, the body born in Bethlehem's stable which suffered death as a perfect sacrifice for sin. The shadow of a cross lay over the stable, the carpenter's shop, the home in Nazareth and over all His Life and ministry. His sinless birth made possible a redeeming efficacious sacrifice. Now we have access to God through the sacrificial pathway from Bethlehem to Calvary. Oh, the wonder of that unique birth in the stable! It has changed all our lives!
