God lives and works today. This certainty is a great comfort which we all need more than ever in today's world. Is there any way we can find security for today and the future? Listen to today's meditation by Basilea Schlink called Surrounded by Angels.
One of our ministries was to the slum areas of our city. We drove from quarter to quarter in our traveling chapel, an old beat-up blue bus. Everywhere we stopped, women and children would gather to worship and learn about Jesus.
In one of these areas, there was an especially rough gang. A special police squad had to roam the area to handle all the fights and hold-ups and similar incidents. Nor did these rowdies spare us.
They tried to frighten us by threatening to set fire to the bus, by letting the air out of the tires, or by rocking the bus in an attempt to tip it over. So we never drove to our lessons in this area without first asking all of our sisters to pray for the protection of the angels. One day, we had especially asked for prayer, and not without reason.
We soon found out that the troublemakers had planned a surprise attack on us. A gang of ten young men came who were especially notorious for their surprise attacks and rumbles. However, for some inexplicable reason, they all stayed a safe distance from the bus, and nothing happened.
We thanked our sisters for their prayers for angel protection. We had experienced that there is indeed power in prayer. God had fulfilled His promise from Psalm 91, verse 11.
He will give His angels charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. The next time we drove into that district, we had new courage. The conviction was strong within us that we were not defenseless against these planned attacks.
The power of God's angels is stronger than all the powers of darkness. Their attacks wouldn't have a chance. And indeed, when we arrived, the leader of the gang came up to me and asked in a very quiet voice, Why do you always come to us? You know we might attack you one of these days.
This young man had already been in jail several times for assault and robbery. But before any of us could answer him, he added reflectively, No one can do anything to you. Is it true that God is with you? Each one of us can and should experience the same as we did.
That a strong watch of angels surrounds, protects, and serves those who love the Lord. For God doth yearn to answer such who cry for grace and mercy. So he who prays with heart and soul to Him who made him to His own Will find God wants to apply it.
