God lives and works today. We all know from experience what power a name can have. It can arouse warm feelings in us if it happens to be the name of someone we love.
Or it can awaken fear and dread in our hearts. Or if it's the name of someone rich and influential, it can open doors for us that would otherwise be closed. Today's meditation by Basilea Schlink tells about the most beautiful and powerful of all names and what that name can mean for us if we call upon it.
O Jesus, name of beauty, to you I lift my heart. I praise that you, Lord Jesus, my King and Master are. Your name, Jesus, is shining with glory great and bright, a sun that knows no setting, that ever gives its light.
Yes, whoever loves Jesus has a secret in his heart. It's the name of the one he loves, the name of Jesus. I've experienced in my own life that whenever I let the name of Jesus sound in my heart, as the name of the one I love above all else, and when over and over again I pronounce this name, my love for him grows more and more brightly.
I have to praise him. New songs continually flow from my heart, for I can't suppress my joy at his wonderful, wonderful name. One name there is, one name in earth and heaven, one that alone has glorious power, victorious might.
It is the name of Jesus. Yes, it was incomprehensible to me that we can claim this name for ourselves, that we have a right to it. And so my heart is overwhelmed whenever I call upon this name of Jesus.
What a Lord I have! He's the bridegroom of my soul. What a prince of victory! He's fought the battle against Satan and has trampled him underfoot. Yes, when we call upon his name, all bonds must break, and the powers of Satan must flee.
Yes, the soul who loves Jesus says, This is my beloved. This is my friend. He's the almighty.
He's the all-powerful victor. It is my privilege to call upon the name of him who is there to serve me in love. He lives completely for me, just as I want to live completely for him.
Jesus is here. He stretches forth his hands to me. He sets his almighty power into action for me.
If I speak his name in my heart, something happens. Therefore, call upon the name of Jesus today, wherever you are, whoever you are. You'll experience for yourself what a power, what a blessedness lies in saying this name, Jesus, the most beautiful name.
