Archbishop Chrysostomos

1 Sermons
Archbishop Chrysostomos II, born 1941, died 2022, was a Cypriot preacher and primate of the autocephalous Church of Cyprus, whose outspoken leadership from 2006 to 2022 blended spiritual authority with bold political engagement. Born Irodotos Dimitriou on April 10, 1941, in Tala village, Paphos, British Cyprus, he lost his father at age 10 and, two years later, joined the Monastery of Ayios Neophytos as a lay brother after primary school. He graduated from Paphos Gymnasium in 1963, was ordained a deacon that November, and studied theology at the University of Athens (1968–1972). Rising through the ranks, he became hegumen of St. Neophytos Monastery in 1972 and Metropolitan of Paphos in 1978, confronting mismanagement in the Archdiocese before succeeding the ailing Chrysostomos I as Archbishop in 2006. Chrysostomos II’s preaching championed Orthodoxy’s moral and cultural heritage, often delivered with a conservative edge—he supported the far-right ELAM party and opposed gay adoption—while his tenure saw reforms like founding the Theological School of Cyprus and revising the church’s charter.
