Asa Alonso Allen (1911–1970). Born on March 27, 1911, in Sulphur Rock, Arkansas, to A.O. Allen and Leona Clark, A.A. Allen was a Pentecostal evangelist known for his faith healing and deliverance ministry. Growing up in poverty with alcoholic parents, he faced a troubled childhood, running away at 14. Converted at 23 in 1934 at Onward Methodist Church in Miller, Missouri, he embraced Pentecostalism, receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and preaching by 1936, ordained by the Assemblies of God. Married to Lexie Scriven in 1936, they had four children—Paul, John, James, and Mary—but divorced in 1967. Allen joined the Voice of Healing movement, holding tent revivals with reported miracles, peaking in the 1950s with a 22,000-seat tent. His Miracle Magazine reached 450,000 subscribers, and his radio and TV broadcasts spanned 58 stations. Controversies, including a 1955 drunk driving arrest in Knoxville, led to his departure from the Assemblies of God; he continued independently, founding Miracle Valley in Arizona. Allen authored books like God’s Guarantee to Heal You (1950). He died on June 11, 1970, in San Francisco, from liver failure tied to alcoholism, with a blood alcohol level of 0.36. Allen said, “God’s power is real, and it’s for today’s needs.”
