Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the preacher discusses the importance of the mind in the preaching of the word of God. He refers to Matthew's Gospel chapter 10, where Jesus sends out his disciples and advises them to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. The preacher emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in empowering the disciples, as seen in Peter's preaching on the day of Pentecost and his boldness before the Sanhedrin in Acts chapter 4. He also highlights the need for believers to dedicate their time and attention to studying and understanding the Scriptures, as the mind is a crucial part of serving God effectively.

And we're at week number 20, and we're looking at the Spirits' Work, Saint Ward this evening. Spirits' Work, Saint Ward. Now we were singing a moment or two ago that the Comforter has come. And I think that every believer in here, I believe this, that every believer in here is perfectly sure that the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, is the third person of the Trinity, and we took a night on the personality of the Spirit, and I'm sure they're sure now about the third person of the Trinity. And they're very sure that He indwells at this moment every believer in this building. It matters not what flag you fly or what denomination you claim. If you're born again and you're saved by grace and washed in the blood of the Lamb, then you're indwelled tonight at this moment by the Holy Spirit. Can I prove this to you again? Let's have a look at 1 Corinthians chapter 7. And Paul's writing to these Corinthians, and remember in the third chapter, he had to say to them, I could not speak unto you without the spiritual. These believers at Corinth at that moment were very carnal. There was strife and divisions among them. Nevertheless, they were saved, you know. They were truly born again. But they were living carnal lives. But when we come to chapter 6 and verse 19, he says to them, What? One of those great questions of Paul's. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you? They're saying, carnal Christians. Of course he is. Of course he wasn't having his way in them. Oh no, they were grieving him and quenching him. Nevertheless, their body was the temple of the Holy Ghost. And so you see, the comforter has come. And you remember our Lord Jesus Christ said this in John 16. Let's go back to John 16. Verse 7. Our Lord speaking to his own here said, Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is expedient for you that I go away. For if I go not away, the comforter will not come unto you. But if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, we have noted this in the night gone by. He will reprove, or the word there, he will convince the world of sin. Of this sin of unbelief and of righteousness. And of judgment, not judgment to come. Judgment that's passed because the prince of this world is judged. He said in verse 13. When he the spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth. Now this is what he wants to do with believers. He wants to use them. To convince the world of sin. And of righteousness. And to convince the world that the old devil is judged. Just because they are absolutely set free. He wants to go a bit further. Last week we looked at him. Taking the believers to glorify Christ. He shall glorify me was the text. But tonight we are going to look at him. Taking believers. To guide them into all truth. Now I want you to notice the faculties he will use. First of all your body. You know I don't think that sometimes we get this clear enough. That the holy ghost needs every part of our body. If he is going to lead us into all truth. You see he needs your hands just now to turn over the pages. And I'll tell you this. He needs your eyes. So that you'll look at the truth. And examine it. Yes. And it doesn't matter who brings you to the bible class. There must be a place where you've got to use your feet. The holy ghost needs that body of yours. He needs it in its completeness, in its totality. If he's to guide you into all truth. We have a dear brother in here just now. He's got only one leg. But he's been here for 20 years more. I'm 25 here and he must be here as long as I am. He never misses. Another dear brother just at the back there. He comes on a walking aid. And we have to help him in. You know the lord wants your body. We're to present our bodies. A living sacrifice. Wants to take our eyes. Wants to take our ears. Wants to take our lips. Wants to take our hands. Wants to take our feet. And he needs all this. If he's to guide us into all truth. I don't want to linger here. You know he not only needs your body, he needs your soul. And there is a great difference you know between body and soul. You know there are also lights come and say to me there is no difference. Two of them at the door not long ago with the old yarn. I've had it since I was born again I think. Forty years ago. He said there is no difference between body and soul. He just knew on the road. You have to start over with him again. Have a look at this. So that you'll know how to treat them when they come to the door. This is Matthew's gospel chapter 10. This is what I turned up to. Poor wee fella he hadn't been long out of school. He's standing at the door all dressed up and he thinks he knows everything. And he said to me there is no difference between body and soul. And I said now this is Matthew's gospel chapter 10. And our Lord Jesus is calling his 12 disciples. And he's sending them out. You're in agreement with this. He said yes. Verse 16 he said behold I send you forth our sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents. Harmless as doves. What a message for preachers. And then I said he said this to them down the chapter a little bit son. He said at verse 28. Wait until he got his Bible open. Fear not them which kill the body. But are not able to kill the soul. I said you tell me there's no difference. I said surely our Lord Jesus Christ is differentiating between body and soul. You see the worst that the rebels could do to me would be to kill the body. That's all they can do. They cannot touch my soul you know. My soul is different from my body. You see my soul is myself. I just live in this body. This is the tent I live in. And the day I die or the day that somebody kills me. Then I shall be absent from the body. And our loved ones will have to bury it. Oh but I'll be present with the Lord then. Oh there is a difference. There is a difference. You see your soul is very wonderful. Have a look at this. It's way back in the book of Revelation. I got this wee fellow to look at this too. He stands looking at me as stupid as he is. And I rattled it into him because he needs it. I have no emotion I've gone easy with the devil. These same wee fellows I'll have to lash them. Yes. If he comes along he'll get them too. Yes. Ah the master just opened the book to the devil and scared the life out of him. He just said it is written. It is written. It is written. It's a pity the fellows we send out onto the TV couldn't say it was written. Fiddling around. Yes. Here we are. We are at Revelation chapter 6. And it's a terrible day on earth. Terrible things are happening. We've been through this here on Sunday evenings. This day of wrath. Verse 9. And when he had opened the fifth seal. That is when our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven had opened the fifth seal of this book that he took out of the hand of God. I saw under the altar. I saw under the altar the souls of them. I want you to get that word very carefully. The souls of them that were slain for the word of God and for the testimony they held. Now let's get the souls of them that were slain. Let's get the slain bit in first. What better than the slain. The body was slain. You see John's in heaven and he's seeing all this. He looks down. He can see the bodies that were slain. The Antichrist had beheaded these men. Everybody's got their heads off. But John sees the souls. Let me tell anybody in here that's got inoculated with soul sleep. One fellow tried to get out of this dilemma by saying but the soul goes to sleep when they die. And not the ones that I see I said. These are the souls. They're under the altar. He can see the bodies slain and the heads off. But he says I saw the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice. And no sleep about that. Roman Catholic fellow came here on Sunday night for the first time. He says boy you don't let them go to sleep here. Out of bit of it I said. I have no notion of letting them go to sleep. I'm able to shout yet. Thank God. And I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice saying. How long oh Lord holy and true. Dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth. Cause it was boys on the earth that took these heads off. And white robes were given unto every one of them. And it was said unto them that they should rest for a little season. Until their fellow servants. Watch this carefully. Their fellow servants also and their brethren. That should be killed as they were. Oh yes God has this time some of his servants. To be killed. Don't make any mistakes about it. Yes he has. James was killed with a sword. God says alright I'll allow this. Yes and Stephen was told while God stood still in the heavens. That there was a day when Paul the great Paul put his head on the block. And they took it off with one blow. You would never know what God wants you to do at the end. Whatever God wants us to do it will suit us. He must be right. I can tell you there's a difference between body and soul here. That's all the bit that I'm after just now. And I mustn't wander into other doctrines. Oh yes there's the body slaying the head off. Here are the souls shouting on their tiptoes in heaven. Oh come to the door to tell me there's no difference. You can't read that's your trouble. Oh no. Look the soul's a very wonderful part. It's the emotional part of me. And you. You see if the Holy Ghost has me properly. Then my soul shall be filled with love. And my soul shall be filled with joy. My soul shall be filled with peace. Now if he's going to guide us into all truth he needs your soul. You see can I confess something just to help everybody. There is nothing I love more and I say this very honestly. There is nothing I love more than to sit for hours and hours and hours and hours and ponder this book. And I shall tell you this and there's a boy here who can prove it. He's been in the house two or three times today. I've been at this book from six this morning to six this night. And it's the greatest joy. It's no bother to me. My bother is getting up and going to do something else. No bother at all. I can read this and study this hour after hour after hour. And it's not only a great love I have for it. I have a great joy in doing it. It is no work for me. It is joy. And I'll tell you that's where I get most of my peace. And if he's going to use you and guide you into all truth he'll have to have a bit more of your time. I would wonder how he could guide some of you into all truth when you're stuck with half of the night on the TV. And let's be very fair about this. He needs your body. He needs your soul. But you see this. He needs your mind. You know your mind's a very wonderful part of you. I've been trying to teach the boys out at the school for a long time. All about their mind. And I'm not a psychologist mind you. I happen to know you know that up here in here somewhere there's a thing called memory. And mine's a pretty good one and I thank God every day for it. And I can just remember almost everything I need to remember in this book. There's other things I don't remember. But there is a memory up here. And then of course you know that up here there is an understanding. Which is quite different from memory. Memory is just this faculty upstairs here. That can go back in a flash and get all the things that's back there you know. When I'm tracing truth sometimes I can put the light out and lie. And my memory can go back to Genesis 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and I know all the chapters right through to 50. And I know all the chapters in Exodus and Leviticus and Numbers and Deuteronomy and Joshua, Judges, Ruth and all around. And works. Works like that. It's been trained to work like that. Then of course understanding is up here. That's different. Just need to know the meaning of this. When I look at my times are in. Are in. How do they get in? What way did they get in? Tell me how they got in. I need to understand that. If I'm going to teach it I need to understand it. I need to ask a lot of questions. And I need to ask somebody who knows. I need to ask the Holy Ghost. He happens to know. And you see my imagination is up there too. Yes. You know your imagination is a mighty part of you. All the architects in the meetings a few years before me. They take a bit of blank paper and they are going to do something for an old fellow who owns a corner of a field. And they draft this out and they can see this whole thing. And the trees grown and everything else. It's not a bricklayed you know. But it's their imagination. And because of their profession they can do it pretty well. Our Holy Ghost wants to take that imagination you know. Wants to show you things. To come. He wants to open your understanding. He wants you to remember. Let's go back to John 14 just for a moment. I think you remember this but you know it's always good to go back. And this is John 14. And verse 26. Our Lord Jesus Christ is speaking and saying, But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you. You know that's what he's come to do. Saint one. He wants to get your body and we must get that bit over. And he wants to get your soul so that you'll love the thing and you'll enjoy it and you'll have peace in doing it. But he wants to go up to the upstairs here and he wants to take your memory. And he wants to bring all things to your remembrance. Yeah that's a great thing isn't it? Sometimes when we sit at this table on Sunday morning and we're taken up with the words this do in remembrance of me. Sometimes one of our young men will stand up and read a little phrase from the book of Job. And in the book of Job it says, remember the battle and do no more. But it's a great thing to sit down on Sunday morning and let the Holy Ghost take you back to Calvary. And you remember the battle. You don't need to do any more, that's all you do, you just remember the battle. And you remember when Peter had denied our Lord Jesus and he did it again and again and again and the last time he got cross about it and he denied him with laws and curses. And then the Lord turned and looked at him, just looked. And Peter remembered. That's the word. He remembered what the Lord had said. And you know when the day of Pentecost was fully come and Peter was filled with the Holy Ghost and he stood up to preach. You know the Holy Ghost not only took his body and soul but his whole mind. Go through the chapter and I don't want to take you back through but like a flash he went back to Psalm 16 and he could explain this to the whole crowd just there and then. Oh the Holy Ghost was taking his memory. And you'll find that when he stood before the Sanhedrin in Acts chapter 4 and they were pressing him to the gate you know and they wanted to take his life. You remember he stood up. Let's go to Acts 4 till you just see this demonstration of this thing. Acts chapter 4. This to me is thrilling and has always been encouraging to me. Great comfort to me. Verse 7 And when they have set them in the midst and the they is talking about the old Jewish Sanhedrin, the council of the Jews and they had authority to kill the member. When they had set them, it's Peter and John standing before 71 members of the council. They asked by what power or by what name have you done this? It was a very subtle question. Because there was a Jewish Lord in the book of Deuteronomy. If any man shall perform a miracle in any other name than the name of Jehovah he must be slain. So they're leading him into a trap. By what name or by what power have you done this? He had lifted the man at the beautiful gate of the temple and he was wonderfully miraculously healed. It says this miracle will get into it next week that was done. When they had set them in the midst they asked by what power or by what name have you done this? Then Peter, now watch this bit, filled with the Holy Ghost. You need to be filled with the Holy Ghost on these occasions. Said unto him, ye rulers of the people and elders of Israel I'm sure if we're filled with the Holy Ghost we'll always be nice. If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man by what means he is made whole Be it known unto you all, unto all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth and that was asking for trouble Whom ye crucify that's asking for more trouble Whom God raised from the dead and these were sadducees he was facing they didn't like this resurrection Even by him, not this man stand here before you all and then like a flash he's away back to one of the sands His memory must have been working Nay, the Holy Ghost was bringing to remembrance things that he must have read long ago This is the stone that was set at naught of you builders which has become the head of the corner My, if you'd work up the Bible for a month you wouldn't get a better text would you? Like a flash he got It's the Holy Ghost Not brilliance that, that's the Spirit of God And then you see Not only did he stand up and be truthful and go back and find the scriptures to back it But now he's as bold as a lion He says neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved No, when they saw the boldness I'll tell you this, this is what the Holy Ghost wants to do with us You see, I think this must be said now There is no chance of the Holy Ghost in a moment like this or in a crisis like this bringing things to your remembrance that you never read in your life There isn't a chance in the world Oh no, don't you think that he's going to work miracles up here Oh no Old F.B. Mair said on one occasion when he was talking about the marriage feast at Cana of Galilee How the Lord Jesus said to them, fill the water pots with water And he said, you know how often I felt just like a stone water pot And I said to myself, Mair, you're not much use And I knew that was the truth But I felt as if the Lord was saying, well never mind you're only an old cold stone water pot But fill it with the water of the word And I'll tell you, if you get filled with the word Then when the occasion arises Oh, the Holy Ghost can turn the water into wine And don't you think he's going to work the miracle if you're just reading the telegraph And not the book We need to get back to the book You young ones don't know the education you're getting in the book There isn't anything anywhere in any of the universities can give you it This is first and foremost And we must get down to it and we mustn't waste time Put your nose in the book, I know you haven't the time I have I've been set apart for this The Apostle said we will give ourselves unto prayer Unto the ministry of the word That's all they did, just prayed and ministered the word You see, he wants to take your memory, you see And he wants to take your understanding You know, he opened that understanding You remember our Lord Jesus In Luke 24 when the two came back From Emmaus, what a wonderful day it was Our Lord began at Moses, first five books of the Bible And all the prophets, and he expounded unto them and all the scriptures The things concerning himself Oh, how often I longed and I just walked behind them and heard them talking Like that, I suppose five or six hours of an exposition What a thrill it would be And these two were so thrilled, their hearts burned They began at the same hour and went back to Jerusalem, you know And when they went into the upper room and the saints were there The saints said, you know, the Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon Ah, these two said, yes, and we know, we know, we were with them on the road We will tell you what he told us And as they were just getting over the message to them, the Lord appeared Stood in the midst, he was there Then he opened their understanding See this thing up here, understanding Here's how the old school master used to bother me about He used to look into my face close up into it, you know, what a wee fellow He was a great big six feet three and broad shoulders Looked right in, trying to scare me, he was a fool for trying that And he says, you're stupid Can always see that big face close to mine, you're stupid Both of us were stupid Yes, I'll tell you this, the Holy Ghost can take your understanding You know, let's get all the clever fellows in Let's go to 1 Corinthians chapter 2 for a moment I think this is one of the mightiest passages in the book Concerning the understanding that's up here Watch this very carefully, because you need to read this carefully Verse 9 But it is written, I hath not seen, nor ear heard Neither hath entered into the heart of man The things which God hath prepared for them that love him Now, I'm about to say this to you When he says, neither hath entered Neither hath entered into the heart of man That he's talking about unsaved man Unnatural, unsaved natural man Talking about the natural man You say, how do you know? I'll tell you how I know Because it says here I hath not seen, nor ear heard Neither hath entered into the heart of man The things which God hath prepared for them that love him But, but, but, but God hath revealed them unto us Oh yes, I think that's quite easy You don't need to be in an upper class to get that bit There's a difference between them and us, that's all there is about it And it doesn't make a matter what school they go to Doesn't make a matter They just can't see the thing We'll approve this to you But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit That's the bit The Holy Ghost should take your understanding For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God For what man knoweth the things of man, sayeth the Spirit of man which is in him Even so the things of God knoweth no man but the Spirit of God Now we have received not the Spirit of the world But the Spirit which is of God That we might know the things that are freely given to us of God Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth But which the Holy Ghost teacheth Comparing spiritual things with spiritual The whole thing comes out into the open now But the natural man Receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God For they are foolishness unto him Neither can he know them Doesn't make a matter how clever he is You see I have seen natural men you know I go to Queens two or three times a week And I see the professors Yea, brilliant in their own department Absolutely brilliant But when they come into my department Absolutely dense They don't understand the things of God Neither can they know them The natural man just cannot know them That's all there is about it now You see his understanding is darkened But when you get saved you see The Holy Ghost takes this understanding And he opens your understanding That you might understand the scriptures He's going to lead you into all truth And he must get your understanding Oh how I have looked at this book at times And how things from Genesis And things from Daniel And things from Revelation have all come together And you say to yourself my that is wonderful Never say to yourself that you're wonderful Because it's not you It's the spirit leading you into all truth Needs your understanding You know he needs your imagination doesn't he If he's going to show you things to come You know we should take a light in that But we'll not do it You see he lets us see the rapture in that book The day when Jesus will come You know we believe this We can see this happening you know So I had this on my face to come to this Jesus will come to the air And we'll rise to meet him And then we can see the great tribulation period He has given this to us in this book And then we can see the whole millennial reign And all the things that will be done when Jesus reigns It's too big a bit of a book there to be missed By a millennialist What are you going to do with the things that's in the book I'll tell you this He not only lets us see all those things But he takes us on, on, on A way past When time shall be no more And we can see our eternal home And it's glories and wonders and comforts But we'll have to give the Holy Ghost a better time That's what I must plead for I'm sure we've been rushed I'm sure that we were never meant to be rushed the way we are I'm sure they all sense, the old Puritans Why they would sit down for hours But the book We are not doing it There we gather we bits up here and there And we love the world and we're going to heaven and all right Do we give them time? A wee woman came to me the other day She says to me You know my husband since you went to the Bible class He's sitting up for hours reading this book, is it right? So when he was out at the bottle you had more bother with him Oh let's give the Lord a chance Take time, give God time Give him your body Give him your soul Give him your mind Give him your memory Your imagination, your understanding Let him take you over And I'll tell you this he'll thrill you But he'll not only thrill you He'll talk to the woman next door And she might get saved Now don't miss next week Because it's important for you Let's bow together before the Lord Not sing anymore Let's spare her other hand just for the moment Lord we're at thy feet We praise you for yourself We thank you we live in this age when the Holy Ghost has come We thank you that our bodies tonight The temples of the Holy Ghost Which is in us Oh Lord it's true we have the Holy Ghost But the question is has the Holy Ghost got us? Or are we only giving them wee picks of time? Lord talk to us about this We would need to give you more time We would need you to take our whole body And then all the parts of our soul And every bit of our memory And fill it with the word of God that can be used when it's needed Lord take us into the deep things of God Make us understand Even when the most brilliant natural man cannot understand There is foolishness to him Lord just make us to be what you want us to be Bless this class tonight Part us now In thy feet And with thy blessing For thine own sake Amen
