Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the preacher discusses the issue of killing animals for food in relation to the commandment "Thou shalt not kill." He points out the story of Cain and Abel, where Abel offered the firstborn of his flock as an offering to the Lord. The preacher argues that Abel did not necessarily kill the animals, but rather presented them as an offering. He then challenges the idea that things changed after the crucifixion of Jesus by referring to a passage in John's Gospel where Jesus stands on the shore of Galilee after his resurrection. The preacher also briefly mentions a young Indian boy who is believed to be a guru and claims to be the new son of God. The sermon ends with a mention of continuing the discussion on the topic in the next week's sermon.
Sermon Transcription
And God said, let us make man in our image, and it's very wonderful, that's the day that God made man. Verse 27, so God created man, there's the word for you now, He made him, He created him in his own image. Verse 29 says, And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of the earth, and every tree in the which is the fruit of the tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for meat. He said, I think you've never seen that before, Mr. Mullins. You see, God has given us vegetables and fruits, every tree and every herb bearing seed, and when we say that we're talking about corn and wheat and barley and rice, we're talking about apples and pears and oranges and all the rest of it, cabbages, leeks and onions, bearing seed. He says that's, that was his meat, is fair enough. He says, you see, you've left that all together. When you come into the second chapter, he said to me, verse 15, the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. Just of the trees of the garden, just of the herbs of the tree. He said, you know, it's entirely wrong to eat meat. I said, well, all you have to say about it is just where you put the first off. He says, it's quite plain to me, quite plain to me that you don't see something this year. I said, I want you to see that this was before the fall, because the fall comes in chapter 3, doesn't it? I will also take you back over it again, friend, and I will show you this, that before the fall, if you go to chapter 1, see verse 30. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the earth, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat. And it was so. Before the fall, did the lion eat straw like an ox? Yes, he may do it again soon. He wasn't eating anybody then. He just ate the herbs of the field, that's what was given. Because he was a different janitor before the fall. It was when the fall came, you know, that the whole creation began to grow. He said, I think you're trying to make something out of this. Oh no, I'm not trying, we've got a long way to go, I said. Let's go over to Genesis chapter 9, and they're coming out of the ark, because the fall brought the whole creation into such a state that God had to destroy it with a flood. What you're talking about was before the fall and before the flood. Is Moses coming out of the ark? And God blessed Noah coming out of the ark. And God blessed Noah and his sons and said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the field and upon every pile of the earth, and upon all that moveth upon the earth and upon all the fishes of the sea. Into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meek for you. I've thought them back now, haven't I? I said, I'm afraid it's you that hasn't read this book. It's just after the fall. And God just saying, every moving thing that liveth shall be meek for you. You see the old fellow staring at it, you know. He says, there's something wrong here. I said, it's you? He says, you know there is a commandment. Do you know the fixed commandment? I said, I do. It's thou shalt not kill. He says, you can't say thou shalt not kill and then kill these animals and eat them. You can't do it. There's something wrong. I said, you know, if you go back to chapter 4, you're going to be in a fix again. Because there's Cain and Abel here. And you know all about them. Abel was the keeper of sheep. Cain was the pillar of the ground. And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel he also brought of the first springs of his flock and of the vipers. I said, did he kill them? He says, I think your reading killed him to death. I said, I don't think so. Because when you come to Hebrews chapter 11 it says, By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice. That's what it says. I said, you would like the wood killed, would you? He says, yes, I would love the wood killed to see it. I said, I'll show you it. Have a look at Exodus chapter 12 now just for a moment. Exodus 12. And you remember this because you'll get all characters who'll come and argue. And this is about the Passover lamb. It says, verse 3, Speaking unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, a lamb for a house. And it says in verse 6, And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month, and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. Is that it? I'm beginning to knock him about a bit now. He's not sleeping, you know. Yes. He said to me, It must be different after the cross. I said, you're beginning to rave now. I said, would you like me to show you something after the cross? Have a look at this just to please yourself. John's Gospel. It's the last chapter. Jesus Christ was crucified in chapter 19. He rose again in chapter 20. And in chapter 21, He has come to the shore when the disciples were away out in the bush. You remember that. Verse 4 says, When the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore. I said, was He standing on the shore of Galilee? He said, yes. He said, was there anybody with Him? He said, no. Who was He watching? He was watching for these souls who were out in the bush. And He saw them coming in and He called them. Verse 9 says, As soon as they were come to land, They saw a fire of coals there, And fish laid thereon. They said, Did He catch them? Did He kill them? Did He roast them? You know one of these dense old fellows that you look at and he looks past you. Do you know that sort of thing? That's what he was. Stupid as could be. Thought he was clever, you know. Look at the verse we're at. We're at 1 Timothy chapter 4, so you see. 1 Timothy chapter 4. In the last days, you know, These seducing spirits will bring these doctrines of devils, Speaking lies and hypocrisy, Forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from each Which God hath created. Because He didn't only create Adam and Eve, He created the animals too. Says you didn't know. Says they teach you evolution where you go to. They're teaching you nonsense. God created the animals. And God created them to be received with thanksgiving Of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, And nothing could be refused. They could be received with thanksgiving, For it is sanctified by the word of God and blessed. So in these last days, you know, The permissive society is bringing the doctrine of demons about marriage. I am bringing the doctrines of demons about me. Now I'm leaving this one out because this is a long one and I'll do it next week. They're bringing the doctrines of demons about marriages. I'll just take that up for you now. I'll spoil it if I do it now, but let me do something else. There's meat and lunch and miracles and we will do it next Tuesday if the Lord will. There's this medication lot that's going on now. You know, I have a book here. It's by Harlan Lindsay. It's just a paperback, you can buy it in any shop round the block. He got it in the shop. Harlan, he has. Yes, it's called Kitchen is Alive and Well on Planet Earth. I think he's too well, that's the trouble. I assure you it's a great book. And I endorse every page of it. This is a man who has learned. Now when he talks about this meditation, you know what I'm talking about, don't you? The Beatles wedged away to the Holy Man in India. They should have kept them there. Go on, that's it. Look, this meditation, all the Hollywood stars and the entertainers and the pop groups of some content, they're all going into this meditation. This is what Harlan Lindsay said, meditation is very big. In America, it's called the meditation movement. And in some parts of the United States it's called the Transcendental Meditation Movement. A study made over three years of twenty communes in the university of the state, in the universities of the states, shows that the Transcendental Meditation Movement has thirty thousand members. Take this meditation now. Dr. Stanley Kruppner who studied it, he says it tends to make a person become sceptical of God. It tends to make a person doubt any concept of life after death. It tends to make a person discard many beliefs. He may have hardly fully delved into meditation and psychic phenomena. Then he talks about the guru, which is the word for Indian, holy man. He mentions a thirteen year old guru from India visiting America and the British Isles. And it may shock you. This little thirteen year old Indian boy who is supposed to be a great guru, he was on the streets the other day, on the streets. All the boys playing around him with banjos and singing, dancing. He stands there, he's only thirteen, he's a kid. Now this is what they say about him. He's empowered, this kid is empowered, to impart the imperishable good of God to all sincere seekers who seek for perfect tranquillity of mind through spiritual might. It is reported that this, the world's youngest guru, is the new son of God. Jesus Christ put into the background what him I've known. This is the new son of God, thirteen years of age, Indian, black hair. He travels by jet of the Lord from heaven, bringing what he says are messages of hope and wisdom to troubled souls. Some of his devotees who come to worship him say they are saved each time in his presence. A man called McCandless Phillips, who is a journalist for the New York Times, writes, Demons of the east are coming into the United States now, bringing with them the religious teachings and the occult arts with which they have long deceived the people over there. That fellow, a journalist, he's a good one. Demons, he says, of the east are coming, he writes. Tell me that a kid of thirteen from India is taking a place of the son of God, must be the doctrine of the devil. Oh yes. See the thing they call Scientology? You know something about it, don't you? Well, I'll tell you something about it just now. It was founded by a man called Ron Hubbard. It should be Rubard, but it's not. Ron Hubbard, he was the man who dreamed up Scientology, and certainly dreamed up is in the right sense. It came up all right from the place it did. He has written a book called Dianetics. He calls it the modern science of mental health. He claims that Scientology is both a religion and a science. He says, Scientology claims we are evolving man to a higher state. Oh, what a mighty saying. He's pointed by saying we are. We are evolving. The evolutionists are not like it. They don't believe that that's evolution when a man does the thing for them. We are. It's like the old communist I met up the street some time ago, thought of Stalin in his hand. He says, there's the man that brought Stalinanity, there's the man that brought Christianity to the world. I said, friend, Christianity belongs to Christ. The only thing he ever brought was Stalinanity, and it wouldn't look well on people. He says, I want to tell you he was the figure of the world, sir. He says, it's a pity you haven't proved he was yet, isn't it? Because when we talk about the figure of the world, we say he is. You say you're dead. It's a pity of you, you're an orphan. They amuse me, just amuse me. Honest to goodness, they amuse me. See this Scientology, one of the journalists for Life magazine, which is no mean magazine, he went into this to find out all he could about it. This is what he wrote. Scientology is scary because of its size and growth. Because of the potentially disastrous techniques it so causally makes you soft. The young man who got involved in this wrote in his later days, I have who God to thank for a nightmare of life that nor that my family relationships saddled me with a burden of guilt. I don't know where to get it read. See this? See these things? Now behind this meditation, this Scientology, we must put witchcraft, virtue, we must put spiritism. Now why all these things we will draft in this meeting? I think the most dangerous thing of the hour for the believing person is the charismatic movement. There's a father here, he said to me the other night, Willie, when you're doing this, you'll do it well. You can be sure I'll do it well. You can be sure I won't rush it. You can be sure we'll stick with our nose in the book until we have it perfect. And that I mean because I feel that the devil can get it. You'll be there. The book will be before you. Now we'll have to go back on to the subject next week again. It's a pity I didn't print about a million of those notes whenever we were at it, but we'll do them over again next week. We'll start with these medicals and we'll see the old devil at work again. I have lost the handbook and the hymns and everything. Oh, here we are, Lord, I've stopped. Thank you, dear. Just two verses of 685. Firmly stand for God in the world's mud strife. Nor the bleak winds roar and the waves beat high. Says the rock alone, give us strength and life when the hosts of sin are nigh. First and last verses, 685, please. Lord, we thank thee for thy precious, holy, infallible, unchangeable, eternal words. Pray, Lord, that thou would help us to look through these pages. Yea, Lord, that the truth might make us free. Part us now in thy fear and with thy blessing and take us to our homes in safety through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
