Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Sermon Transcription
But there was a mighty sign. Men of Egypt began to tremble at the power of God. Then with a mighty hand, these people came out. They saw a cloud of fire going for them. They saw the Red Sea being parted in two. Then they came to the wilderness. God called his servant, Moses, on the mountain. And he kept him there for forty days. During that time, God gave him a heavenly plan. Heavenly plan of trouble maker. Mobiles came down. All people gathered around him. He told them. God has given them the opportunity to build a house for him. But there was a mystery. Why should God want a house? He is everywhere. He lives everywhere. Why should God want a house? Have you ever seen a gate king going about in search for a hut? Imagine a gate king going in your seat. And you question him. Your majesty. What are you searching for? And he may say to you. I am looking a habitation for myself. I am looking a hut for myself. And you may say to him. Your majesty. You have so many palaces. Why are you coming over here looking for a hut? Why do you want to live among us? You find it very very hard to understand this. Why should a king of that stature come like a beggar? But this truth is still more mysterious. God is saying to those people. Those who have grieved him. Those who have failed him. Oh my people. The mother blood build me a sanctuary. Even though they would have thought for centuries. They could not have understood the meaning of it. But they knew one thing. They were words of God. Because they have seen Moses on the mount. They have seen God's cloud on the mount. So they knew fully well. Then Moses was not a mad man. He was a man of God. And he was speaking as a man of God. And they must obey what he says. And he obeyed. And whatever they felt like. They brought offerings. According to God's command. That tabernacle was built. It was a unique structure. No other building was ever built like that. Going by the dimensions. Going by the material. It was unique. No engineer or architect ever have designed such a building. It was God's house. The note was complete. And the cloud came as upon it. And the fire came on sacrifice. And from that day. God began to speak in a new way. He began to speak from between cherubims. Above the mustard seed. Above the earth. In all the tabernacles he passed. In the outer court. In a holy place. The most holy place. There was sunshine. There was sunlight. In a holy place. Light made by oil. In the most holy place. No door. No window. No hole. Only divine light. Sunlight. All light. Divine light. In the most holy place. There was an ark of God. The ark was made of a sheet of wood. Overlaid with gold on both sides. On the top of the ark was a golden plate. A mustard seed. And the same golden plate. Turning both sides became cherubim. And we are told. God began to speak from between cherubims. From that day. You know God already spoke to Moses. In the burning bush. Then he spoke to him on the mountain for 40 days. Then he spoke to him from the cloud. But now it is an entirely different speaking. It is wonderful to see God speaking from a bush. Imagine the burning bush. In the fire. And there came the voice of God from that bush. And Moses. I see no person. Yet I hear the voice coming out. The voice came from the fire. Then the voice came from the fire. The cloud. Then God spoke to him face to face on the mountain. Giving every detail a cover knuckle. But now he is speaking a different way. He is speaking an entirely different way. God was telling Moses his heart secrets. God has been keeping in the heart many secrets. From eternity. But from that day. God began to reveal to him all his hidden heart secrets of centuries. From that day they became God people. Even though they could not understand what God was saying. But the facts remained. God was speaking. And he spoke clearly. And he spoke lovingly. And he kept on reading his mind. That is why God had brought them out of Egypt. That is why he had told them to build a sanctuary. Not for the sake of gold and silver and brass and blue and purple and scarlet. God had no need for these things. He owns everything. But he told them how they can hear the voice of God so clearly. How can a mortal man. A wretched man. A ruined man. Hear the voice of God so clearly. How can the mind of God be revealed to a wretched man. How can the heavenly mysteries. Hidden from ages. Be revealed to a man. The mysteries hidden from angels also. What God had been hiding from angels. Was now being revealed through those cherubim. As long as God could speak. It was a tabernacle. But when people failed God. It was no longer a tabernacle. It was only a perishing material. And that is a very solemn warning. Every building. Doesn't matter who builds it. Or how you build it. It is only a perishing material. But when God does speak. And he speaks clearly. It is only then. Only then the house of God. And that is our longing for this poor structure. That the loving God. The holy God. The mighty God. May speak to us. We don't want good sermon. Either we want some very good Bible teachings. We are never going to find the miracles. Or large numbers or large income. Our longing is. The loving God. The mighty God. The great God. The merciful God. May speak from the heart. Every gathering. We may gather for weekly meeting. Or Sunday meeting. Small or big gathering. Or only a small number. At any time of the night. Our prayer is. God may speak out his heart. He may tell us everything. He may not withhold from us. What he has longing to reveal. Have you seen two friends. For sometime they are thick friends. They confide very freely. They tell everything. Then through some words spoken. There comes a standing in between. There comes some distance. Outwardly they smile and meet together. But the heart has been changed. Every time you want to say something. There comes in a voice. Do not tell him everything. Do not tell him everything. Be very kind. Be very polite. Give him tea and cake and coffee. It does not matter. Let him eat everything. Give money also. But be careful. Do not tell him everything. You cannot trust him fully. He will fail you. He will fail you. Be careful. It is very very painful. When such thing happens. We find very hard to bear it. But when bond again is stored. What a joy come back. Again come confidence. Same with God also. There are chaos when God is silent. We pray and heavens are closed. We come to a meeting nothing happen there. And there is a very sad thing happening. When God the loving God is silent. Even though he supplies our need. Also our prayer. But he does not tell us everything. Please see book of Genesis. Book of Genesis. Chapter 18. Chapter 18. Verse 17. And Lord said. Shall I hide. Abraham there thing which I do. At that time Abraham never knew. Abraham never knew. He never knew what was going to happen. He never even heard of God. But God is saying. How can I hide this thing from my dear loving intimate just body friend. God is saying. I cannot move a step further. I cannot do anything. I am helpless. I must open my heart to my dear Abraham. Isn't it mystery. God is saying that way. I won't do anything. Then God himself came Abraham. His own loving way he opened heart to Abraham. Then God said. Now I am quite happy and free to my God. This is God's word. God longed to speak to us. Today we want to wash his heart in more secret. That our prayer for destruction. That our prayer for destruction. God may feel free to speak with us. God may not withhold any mystery, any secret, any plan, any word from us. Even though that word may hurt us. It may be word of rebuke. It may be word of warning. But even may be. That's a very hard command. Our prayer is. Go God go speaking from thy throne every meeting. Give us thy full message. Pour out thy heart secret. Pour out thy heart secret. God don't spare us. He tells how to tremble thy word. Oh that's our longing. We say before God. We have no desire for lie numbers of the crowd. Or outward miracles of signs. We want to live close to God. With heart. His own heart can be opened. God can say to us. How long my son. How long my son. Look into my heart. And let me tell you everything. Do you want that experience? That's why God told you. That's why God began to speak from that day. When he sat in God. They as a nation. Did not appreciate. The love of God. They only wanted God. When they were in trouble. They only shed tears. When they were in trouble. After all there's no time for God. And there's violence in our cases. They only think of God when we are in trouble. Oh how sad it is. Somebody has only come to God in trouble. Oh do not wait for someone to come to God. Come out day and night. And ask him to speak to you. And tell him very clearly. Lord reveal to me thy heart secret. Things which are hidden from the great man. See Matthew Gospel. And chapter 17. And verse 16. And 17. Matthew Gospel. And chapter 17. And verse 16 and 17. But blessed are your eyes for they see. And your ears for they hear. For they shall you many people of his judgment. Have desire to see those things you see. Have not seen them. Either be here or heard them. See the same words are being repeated. God was asked to know a secret. My only goal by our desire. Now what is your desire in coming to the house of God? Do you come for sermons? Do you come for good Bible teaching? Do you come for good fellowship? Or what is your motive? Please see for yourself. And then you will know how close your God to you is. So we pray from very beginning. The holy God, the loving God may speak. From between each other to all of us. Day by day, week by week, month by month. Revealing us all things in the heart. And may it be our daily experience. A daily enjoyment. Now shall we pray. Our loving Heavenly Father. In the name of Lord Jesus our loving Savior. We are thanking for this happy day. Thank you for those who have come. Take their share of blessing. Thank you for those who have done for us already. Now we pray the promise of number 7. And verse 89. We fulfill it day by day. Lord take away our eyes from perishing things. And take away our eyes from things of naught. Take away our eyes from signs and miracles. Give the hunger and thirst for the living God. A longing to be with thee and live truly. A desire to hear thee speaking from thy heart. Revealing all our secrets. A desire to hear thee speaking from thy heart. Lord make the house of revelation every day. May we gather on weekdays or Sundays. May we be here for a public meeting. Or just for a personal testimony. May we find the loving in the living God. Speaking, revealing, showing things beyond our own capacity. Lord bless thy word. We pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. These messages recorded in 1959, September 25th. By the Bucksing, a message for the Pandal dedication.
