Sermon Summary
In this sermon, Jesus performs miracles by healing the mute, the crippled, the lame, and the blind, which leads the people to praise the God of Israel. Jesus shows compassion for the crowd who have been with him for three days and have nothing to eat. Despite the disciples' doubts about finding enough bread in a remote place, Jesus miraculously feeds the crowd of four thousand with seven loaves and a few small fish. After everyone is satisfied, the disciples collect seven basketfuls of leftovers. Jesus also addresses the request for a miraculous sign, stating that the only sign given will be the sign of the prophet Jonah, foreshadowing his own death and resurrection. He emphasizes the importance of being with him and gathering with him, warning that those who are not with him are against him. Jesus teaches about the power of words, stating that people will be held accountable for every careless word spoken. He then shares the parable of the sower, explaining the different responses to the word of God. Finally, Jesus goes to the sea of Galilee, where he heals many who are brought to him, including the lame, the blind, and the crippled.
Sermon Transcription
In his name, nations will put their hope. Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you. A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Find me in me. He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken, for by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seeds, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow, but when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil where it produced a crop a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear it. But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it. Listen then to what the parable of the sower means. When anyone hears a message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his land. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. Trouble and persecution comes because of the word. He quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word. But the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop yielding a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown. Have you understood all these things? So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet. I will open my mouth in parables. I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world. Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. A great crowd came, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid the middle seat, and he healed them. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking in the blind sea, and they praised the God of Israel. Now Jesus called his disciples to him and said, I have compassion for these people. They have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat, and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they may collapse on the way. His disciples answered, Where could we find enough bread in such a remote place to feed such a crowd? How many loaves do you have? Jesus asked, Seven. And a few small fish. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterwards, the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was four thousand, besides women and children. In his name, nations will put their hope.
