Corrie Ten Boom

Cornelia Arnolda Johanna “Corrie” ten Boom (1892–1983). Born on April 15, 1892, in Haarlem, Netherlands, to a devout Dutch Reformed family, Corrie ten Boom was a watchmaker, evangelist, and Holocaust survivor. Raised in the Beje, her family’s watch shop and home, she became the first licensed female watchmaker in the Netherlands in 1922. A committed Christian, she ran clubs for girls and taught Sunday school. During World War II, she and her family hid Jews from the Nazis, creating a secret room in their home, saving many lives as part of the Dutch underground. Arrested in 1944, Corrie and her sister Betsie were sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where Betsie died, but Corrie was miraculously released due to a clerical error. After the war, she traveled globally, preaching forgiveness and God’s love, sharing her story in over 60 countries. Her book The Hiding Place (1971), co-authored with John and Elizabeth Sherrill, became a bestseller, detailing her faith and wartime experiences. Unmarried, she died on her 91st birthday, April 15, 1983, in Placentia, California, saying, “Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred.”

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the speaker emphasizes the importance of having a heart turned towards God rather than the world. They use the analogy of a glass of water to illustrate this point, explaining that if the heart is divided between the world and God, nothing can flow in or out. The speaker encourages listeners to fully commit their hearts to God, stating that only when the glass is lifted 100% can the stream of life water flow freely. They also discuss the significance of having the Holy Spirit in one's heart and the need to prioritize spiritual matters over worldly possessions. The sermon concludes with a message of hope, highlighting the belief that the knowledge of the Lord will one day cover the earth.

Have you experienced that in the last weeks, streams of living water have flowed through you, on the thirsty humanity around you? Eh? Then I have to ask you something. If I hold this glass down, do you think that water will come in and out? Of course not. Did you ever think that if your heart was turned to the world, that you could be a channel of streams of living water? Of course not. But that's not the case, is it? No. Are you 50%? 50% directed to the earth, and 50% directed to God? You have to see what happens. Nothing comes in and nothing comes out. But maybe you are better. Are you 90% directed to God, and 10% directed to the earth? You have to see what happens. Yes, water comes in, and water comes out, on one side. There is only one way, that the water flows over on all sides, and that is if the glass is directed 100% upwards. Look, now the water flows on all sides. What are you? You are not this, are you? You are not directed to the world. Are you 50% directed to God, and 50% directed to the world? Or are you 90% directed to God, and only 10% to the world? In the book of the Bible, in the Old Testament, there is a beautiful text, in 2 Corinthians 16, verse 9. Because the Lord's eyes go over the whole earth to stand by them powerfully. His heart goes out to Him completely. That means everything except a compromise. That means the complete surrender. That means losing your life for the sake of Jesus. Does that sound a bit too harsh to you? Yes, it is a lot. Losing your life. If you lose it for the sake of Jesus, then you enjoy it much more, because then you take it all from the hands of the Lord. Look, that means the complete surrender. But that surrender is not something terrible. Yes, it is losing your life, but for the sake of Jesus, and that means winning your life. Look, it is like throwing an empty bottle into an ocean. Then it is immediately filled and enveloped with the ocean water. If you completely surrender to the Lord, if you make an end to the compromise, then you are completely filled and enveloped by an ocean of God's love. And that is so great. And then you can do what He tells you to do. Then you can do what Jesus tells us to do. You must love your enemies. I couldn't. I hated them. That man who treated us so terribly, an officer, I saw him afterwards. And when I saw him, it was in Berlin, he came to me and said, I would like to tell you something. I am one of the officers from Ravensbrück. I don't know if you know me. I can tell you that I found the Lord Jesus. I became a Christian. And I know that all my sins are forgiven, because I read it in the Bible, and I also believe in the Bible. And when I brought my sins to the Lord, I asked the Lord to give me the grace that I can also ask forgiveness for one of my victims. And that is why I am here. Fräulein ten Boom will forgive me. Miss Juffert ten Boom wants to forgive me. And when that man said that, a bitterness came to my heart. I saw again how my dying sister suffered because of him. And that moment I suddenly felt, I have no forgiveness, because I have not forgiven. That is what Jesus said. I said, oh Lord, I can't do it, I can't do it. She suffered like that. And then I received that beautiful text again. Romans 5 verse 5. The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. And then I said that prayer again. And listen carefully, because you should also use it if you can't forgive and have love for your enemies. And then I said, thank you Lord for Romans 5 verse 5. Thank you Jesus, that you have brought into my heart the love of God through the Holy Spirit. And thank you Father, that your love in me is stronger than my hate. And when I had prayed that, then I could forgive that man and I could shake his hand. And I said, brother, I have forgiven you everything. And when I shook his hand, then it was as if I felt the love of God You will never touch the ocean of God's love if you have love for your enemy. And you and I can do that through the Holy Spirit. How wonderful. Thank you, thank you, that your eyes go over the whole earth to strengthen all who give themselves completely. Thank you. Thank you that you don't want a compromise, but one hundred percent. Amen. It is also a feeling that your heart is so heavy with worries, like for example a heavy suitcase. Do you know? Last week I had... What was the reason? At first there were such horrible news about the TV. All catastrophes. There was nothing happy about it. Well, you sometimes have those times when everything works so badly. We had a leakage in the basement. I heard about friends who had such a fight. And then I felt so... Yes, I felt 84 years old. I felt weak and old. And the difficult thing was that I am 84. And then I had such a heavy feeling. Then I opened my Bible and then I read, Be not concerned with anything, but let all your wishes be fulfilled and be known to God with love and thanksgiving. And the God of peace, who goes above all minds, will protect your heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus. Well, then I did it. I started to take my heart out of all worries. And I said, Lord, here are the news reports. Oh Lord, what is hopeless in the world? No, not hopeless. There is hope for the world. Then I am glad that I know that this earth will be covered with the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the bottom of the sea. Huh, Lord Jesus, what will that be a wonderful time. And then, Lord, those friends of mine, oh, oh, oh, what are they always mumbling? I told them as often as possible, take your wealth that you have. They are Christian people. Take it. It is written in Romans 5, the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Take it. Claim it. Then you won't be so giddy. Here they are. I can't teach them anymore, but speak to them. Well, and then there was the, yes, the, uh, the leakage. Lord, will you give me, that the right, the right person will find who can repair the leakage. It is absolutely necessary, Lord, that you help me with that. And then here is my health, Lord. I can be so beautified. Lord, let your power of resurrection go through my body, soul and spirit, so that I am healthy and strong for the many works that are to be done. So, and then I unpacked everything else. Everything that was in my suitcase, what was in my heart, and when it was completely empty, then my heart felt just as empty as this suitcase. That was good. And then I said, thank you, Lord, amen. That was good what I did. But do you know what was not good? What I did afterwards? I put everything back in my suitcase, in my heart. All worries went back in. And, do you believe it? My heart was even heavier after my prayer than before. But that was not praying. That praying, that really frees your heart completely, when you bring your worries to the Lord and leave them with Him. And I found that so wonderful. I read that in Romans 8. If you ever have trouble, like I have, that everything is so difficult, then you should read Romans 8. Always when I read Romans 8, I read things that help me. And there I read, in Romans 8, that the Spirit Himself takes care of us and prays for us. And He teaches us to pray. And then I had to think of that boy in Africa. Someone said to him, yes, you have to pray. And he had never prayed in his life. And then he was sitting in the corner of his hut in the afternoon, and then his mother heard him say A, B, C, D, E, F, G. His mother said, what are you doing? He said, Mother, they said that I have to pray. I have never prayed in my life. And now I said, God, I give you the whole alphabet, and you have to make a good prayer for it. That boy will understand Romans 8. Oh Lord, how wonderful it is that you teach us to pray. Forgive us, if we do it so hopelessly badly, that we do not deserve anything. May you teach us to pray, through your Holy Spirit. Hallelujah. Amen. Have you ever thought that in the Bible it says that we should be the light of the world? If you know the Lord Jesus. I have here a sacral lantern and he does not do it. Then I always have to think, a sacral lantern, who does it? It is just like a Christian with a long face. If you are a child of God, then you should have a round face. Poor, poor dark world. If the children of the light are in darkness, then I will show you why this lantern cannot give light. I only have one battery in it. And I could not get this second battery in it, because the thing is full of feet. You probably understand what I mean. This is you, and this is my heart. And those feet are sinful. This was arrogance, this was a sense of inferiority, that is also arrogance, that is that you do not accept your own limitations. This was hatred, unforgiving family, ignorance, rebellion, impurity. I don't want to talk about all the sins, but I believe that it cannot be wrong that you pray today, through me, and know my heart, oh Lord. It is in the psalms. And you can also say, Lord, let me see if there are feet in my sacral lantern. It is exactly the same. And then the Lord will say to you, yes, you are jealous, you are selfish, whatever the Lord says. You should not make an excuse, because the blood of Jesus never made an excuse. But it instructs. And the Bible says, if we instruct our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins. And the blood of Jesus makes us pure of all the sins that we instruct. And when the blood of Jesus has purified you, then you should claim the fullness of the Holy Spirit. And that is the second battery. And the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, and then, in the light of the world. Can you see it? It doesn't work. No, it doesn't. Do you know what I think? I think that I have seen a little foot over my head. Look, I sometimes have the idea that we decent sinners, I am a decent sinner, have to learn how to make a clean deck with our decent little sins. It is quite possible that there is a little bit of good in it, or a little bit of self-pity. Yes. Indeed, I have forgotten a foot. Oh no, that is not a foot, that is paper. Oh, 25 guilders. Nothing wrong with those 25 guilders. It was only in the wrong place. It has to be in my wallet, not in my pocket. If you have too much money, too many guilders, or too few guilders, then the devil would like to put the money in your heart, instead of the Holy Spirit. And that means that you don't have the money, but that the money has you. We live in a time that we can expect the return of Mr. Jesus very soon. And when Mr. Jesus told about the signs of the times, we read that in Lukas 21, he made a remarkable statement. He said, this genocide will not pass before all this has happened. And in the New Testament we read, this generation will experience it all. I thought for a while, what does he mean by that? This generation is the generation that will be there, and that is there, when all these things happen. And read in Lukas 21 what all the signs of the times are. And then we know that we are the generation that we can expect Mr. Jesus. I don't like at all the gossip about the specialties. There is a lot of gossip about the moment of the ascension over a thousand years. And I don't believe that anyone knows that exactly. Of course we can read a lot about it in the Bible, but I believe that it is very regrettable to gossip about it. What I find much more important is what Peter said. He said, in 2 Peter 3 verse 14, Do you expect in this expectation to remain undisturbed and indistinguishable, to appear to him in peace? And in the New Testament, in expectation of this, then you must do your best to be indistinguishable and indistinguishable in his eyes, and to live in peace with God. I find that much more important that you and I are indistinguishable and indistinguishable, that when Jesus comes, we are not ashamed. On the other hand, are you ready? Are you indistinguishable and indistinguishable? Do your best. I remember two boys who said to each other, they made a covenant, they never wanted to sin again. And they made a paper and they wrote on it, from now on we will never do wrong things again. And then they even pricked their arm, they signed it with blood. After fourteen days they burned the paper with both good intentions. Indistinguishable and indistinguishable and then do your best. That is not to be done. But now it is so wonderful that there is an answer to it. I saw them in Germany as a woman in a meeting. And suddenly I recognized her. That was the nurse who was so angry towards Betsy when she was dying. And when I saw her, there was hate in my heart. Why couldn't she be a little friendly to my dying sister? But the moment I felt that I did not forget her, I knew two things. First, I knew that I was not ready for Jesus' return. And I knew that I did not have forgiveness. Because Jesus said that if you do not forgive, you will not be forgiven. But I said, Lord, I can't, I can't forgive her. And then suddenly I received that wonderful text, the Romanian Piper's Pipe. The love of God poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit that was given to us. And I recited this prayer. And you have to listen carefully, because if you ever have trouble with it, you also have to pray that prayer. Thank you, Lord, for the Romanian Piper's Pipe. Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you have brought God into my heart and love by the Holy Spirit that was given to me. And thank you, Father, that your love is stronger than my hatred. At the same moment I could forgive that woman. Do you know what happened? The Lord used me to be more committed than the Lord. It is not only that we are freed, but we can also be used again. And there is nothing that makes you so free as to forgive. And that is what the Lord does. An ocean of God's love through Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! At school, I saw those students making beautiful patterns. And I asked one of the students, if you make a mistake, do you have to cut it out and start all over again? No, he said, that is not necessary. Our teacher is such a great artist that if we make a mistake, then he uses that mistake to increase the beauty of the pattern. Well, I loved that. And I experienced that. I remember that I was in Japan for the first time and I had such a hard time that I thought that the Japanese were lying on top of each other. There were maybe ten types, but apart from that, they all had the same faces. It was only my first month. But I remember that I was at a student meeting and then a latecomer I thought, oh yes, that is the director of the Bible school. When I was finished with my speech, I said to him, would you perhaps like to close this meeting with prayer? Then he said, me? I have never prayed for my life. I thought, what a fool. It was completely, the director of the Bible school was a professor of a non-Christian university and then I saw it, of course. But I said, oh, professor, I will do it. But the Japanese are always very experienced and afterwards he comes to me and bows several times very deeply in front of me. He said, I am sorry that I could not do what you asked, but I had never prayed. I said, professor, I honor you that you did not do it. If you had been a bit more modest, you might have said a prayer without believing it. But, professor, may I ask you something? Why are you not a Christian? No, he said, then I must first study Christianity thoroughly. I said, I have a book here and in this book it does not say if you study Christianity thoroughly then you can become a Christian. But it says, if you accept the Lord Jesus as your Savior and Lord, then he makes you a child of God. And then I went to tell him what that meant, how to accept the Lord Jesus, how the Lord Jesus says, come to me, all who are troubled and burdened, he said, I will give you rest. Well, I really took my time, I may have talked with that man for half an hour, and then he made that decision that makes the angels rejoice. Do you know that? Do you know that you too and every person is so important in the eyes of the Lord, that if one sun is turned there, then the angels rejoice. Well, do you see here what happened? God used the blunderer of that stupid tree to lead this man away and save him for eternity. But of course you have to hand it over to the Lord. And no compromise, completely hand it over to the Lord. And then we are more than victors. Well, life of my life, Jesus, death of my death, which you have given to me in the bitter distress, because I do not die hopelessly, but inherit the glory. A thousand, a thousand you say for this, thanks and honor. Amen.
