Lester Sumrall

Lester Frank Sumrall (1913–1996) was an American Pentecostal preacher, evangelist, and missionary whose dynamic ministry spanned over 65 years and touched more than 110 countries. Born on February 15, 1913, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to George and Betty Sumrall, he was the sixth of eight children. Raised in a Christian home by a devout mother who prayed for him to become a preacher before his birth, Sumrall experienced a life-altering encounter at age 17. Suffering from tuberculosis and facing death, he received a vision of a casket and an open Bible, hearing the words, “Lester Sumrall, which of these will you choose tonight?” Choosing to preach, he awoke healed the next morning and began his ministry soon after. In 1944, he married Louise Layman, whom he met in South America, and they had three sons—Frank, Stephen, and Peter. Sumrall’s preaching career began at 19 when he founded a church in Green Forest, Arkansas, and was ordained by the Assemblies of God. He later traveled globally, ministering with Howard Carter in Asia and Europe, and establishing churches in places like Brisbane, Australia. In 1957, he founded the Lester Sumrall Evangelistic Association (LeSEA), which grew to include over 100 books, television and radio stations, and World Harvest Bible College. A pioneer of Christian broadcasting, he launched World Harvest Television, earning the title "father of Christian television." In 1987, at age 74, he established LeSEA Global Feed the Hungry, delivering millions in aid worldwide. Sumrall died on April 28, 1996, in South Bend, Indiana, leaving a legacy as a preacher who combined fervent evangelism with humanitarian outreach.
