Bill Gothard

Bill Gothard (November 2, 1934 – N/A) was an American preacher, speaker, and founder of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), whose ministry profoundly influenced conservative evangelical circles from the 1960s through the 1980s. Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, to William W. Gothard Sr., a manager involved with ministries like the Gideons, and Carmen Christina Torres, of Mexican-American descent, he was the third of six children in a devout family. Converted at age 15 after a personal crisis over his peers’ lack of direction, he graduated from Wheaton College with a B.A. in Biblical Studies (1957) and an M.A. in Christian Education (1961), later earning a Ph.D. from Louisiana Baptist University in 2004. In 1961, he launched Campus Teams, renamed the Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts in 1974 and IBLP in 1989, focusing on youth and family guidance through seminars. Gothard’s preaching career peaked in the 1970s with his Basic Youth Conflicts Seminar, drawing crowds of 10,000 or more weekly across the U.S., teaching seven “Basic Life Principles” like authority and design, rooted in strict biblical interpretation. He founded the Advanced Training Institute (ATI) in 1984, a homeschooling program tied to his ideals of large families, modest dress, and obedience, influencing figures like the Duggar family.
