Corrie Ten Boom

Cornelia Arnolda Johanna “Corrie” ten Boom (1892–1983). Born on April 15, 1892, in Haarlem, Netherlands, to a devout Dutch Reformed family, Corrie ten Boom was a watchmaker, evangelist, and Holocaust survivor. Raised in the Beje, her family’s watch shop and home, she became the first licensed female watchmaker in the Netherlands in 1922. A committed Christian, she ran clubs for girls and taught Sunday school. During World War II, she and her family hid Jews from the Nazis, creating a secret room in their home, saving many lives as part of the Dutch underground. Arrested in 1944, Corrie and her sister Betsie were sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where Betsie died, but Corrie was miraculously released due to a clerical error. After the war, she traveled globally, preaching forgiveness and God’s love, sharing her story in over 60 countries. Her book The Hiding Place (1971), co-authored with John and Elizabeth Sherrill, became a bestseller, detailing her faith and wartime experiences. Unmarried, she died on her 91st birthday, April 15, 1983, in Placentia, California, saying, “Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred.”

Sermon Transcription
I come to so many different churches and villages and cities, that when I heard that I had to come here, I couldn't even imagine where it was. And when I came here this evening, I thought, oh yes, that's true, I've been here. And now you can imagine that I can't even remember what kind of message I gave the last time. But I was told that it's not too bad if I say a lot of the same thing. I am so glad that we can now listen to each other for a few evenings, to what the Lord has to say to us. Oh friends, time is so short. I believe that we are, already are, or very soon will be, in the greatest crisis of world history. Now we have nothing to fear. We, children of God, who have the glorious book, the Bible, know who is coming. And when I read the Bible and the newspaper together, then I expect the Lord Jesus very soon. But we know that the Antichrist is opening up with a tremendous organization. And now I believe that for this world, not in the first place, the communists are the biggest problem. But I believe that the biggest problem for the world is that children of God, Christians, live like beggars. And Jesus did everything at the cross to make us royal children. And he rose up and he lives. And because Jesus is the winner, we can all be more than winners. And will you now pray that these ten evenings we open our eyes to the Lord, for what it means to be children of God. And that the Lord wants to show us the great joy of complete surrender. I want to start today, and I am so glad that I can really take the time for my message now. I don't need to say everything tonight. So I can just talk about this one text and tomorrow you will also pray a lot during the day that the Lord will do a lot in our hearts. And also for me that I do not stand in the way when God wants to speak. And that we also in this church, that Corinthians remains hidden behind the cross, that we look at Jesus. William Maganda was not at all disappointed when he met him. He said, oh, we don't need Corinthians, we need Jesus. And we have him, and that is true. We often look too much at people. Jesus is there and Jesus is the winner. And Jesus said, look, I am with you every day until the end of the world. And now he said, I am the door, in John 10, 9 and 11, I have come that you have the abundance of life and wealth. The abundance of life and wealth. I use the translation of Hans Brunsch, because I find it so very clear. The life of abundance is for all of us. I was told I would speak for children of God, for Christians. Are you a child of God? I want to say one more word to those who do not quite know that yet. And then I will continue to give my message to the children of God. You know, it says in Apostles 3, 9, 10, Therefore turn to you, that your sins may be purged, and the times of redemption may come from the face of the Lord. The times of redemption, that is the life of abundance. Do you already have that? Are you converted? Do not be alarmed if I use such a word, because it is a very good word. Jesus said, if you are not reborn, then you will not be able to see the kingdom of God and not enter it. Are you reborn? The conversion is to turn around. Originally a person lives away from God. But if you turn around, then you live towards God. Now I ask you, do you not know the day of your conversion? I asked a black man in America, Are you reborn? No, I asked him, when were you born? I did not talk about rebirth, but I just wanted to know how old he was. He said, I do not know when I was born, but I know that I was born. So I can also say, I do not know when I was born again, but I know that I was born again. And therefore I have the freedom to take all the commandments of God into the Bible. And if you have not yet turned around, if you have not yet made a decision for Jesus, do it tonight. And how do you have to do that? Jesus says, who accepts me as a redeemer, I give him the power to become a child of God. So accept Jesus as your salvation, as your redeemer. He will make you a child of God, and then you have to bring him all your sins. And at the same time, the door of the treasury opens wide for his children. And he invites you to come in here, and the treasures are at your disposal at all times. And that's why I want to talk to you today about the righteousness we have, the life of abundance. Not that we will have, yes, the best is yet to come, if we no longer need to live in faith, but look at Jesus face to face. But here and now, Jesus wants to give us life in great abundance. And not only when we live in a beautiful country, like in a church or in a building up there, in the middle of a beautiful country. I saw the view from my room. Oh, how beautiful it is here, wonderful. Well, we've all had enough to eat today. So when I look around like this, then I see that everyone is well dressed. We now live here in a country where you are well governed. But even if you starve, if you are surrounded by people, by people who have had an upbringing in cruelty, then life is still of great abundance for us. And I experienced that. You will still find a booklet on the bookshelf. In it you will read how I saved in Holland together with my friends and my relatives Jews and how the Gestapo brought me to the concentration camp. And there I experienced terrible things. But you don't have to be afraid to read the booklet. Because through the grace of God, I was able to tell in the booklet about the life of great abundance in the middle of, yes, can I say it, of a hell. I always believed, now I know from experience, that the light of Jesus Christ is stronger than the deepest darkness. And only those who are here and who have been to the concentration camp know what a finesse that was. That is why the booklet is not so difficult to read. There can be comfort. You know, what we need is that we become real people. The hair made me a real person. And because I am a real person, I believe in miracles. Because God's miracles are the greatest realities of the world, of the life of a child of God. You know, when the Bible authors speak about the great abundance that we have here and now, then it is often, I have the feeling, that they cannot find words to express it. And I believe that this is also a result of the fall of sin, that we cannot express it. Because there is actually heavenly abundance. And then the Bible authors spoke about a love of Christ, which surpasses all knowledge. This love of Christ is for you, for me. This is the love of God, poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, which is given to us. It is written in an English translation of Ephesians, God has welcomed us into the love that he has for his Son. Have you always trusted your love? I have not trusted my love. My love is so small. But have you trusted the love of God for Jesus? Yes, of course. Think about it, in this ocean of God's love that he has for his own Son, we are welcomed by the Lord Jesus. This is a love of Christ, which surpasses all knowledge. And Peter speaks of unspeakable and glorious joy. Yes, unspeakable. These are the riches, the grace that you and I have now. Paul also says, unspeakable grace and wealth, Ephesians 3, 8. A full-pressed, shaken and overflowing mass. Isn't it terrible that children of God often have long faces? I will also speak this week of the heart of every child of God. It is a cross and a throne. If Jesus is on the throne, then the ego is on the cross. If the ego is on the throne, then Jesus is on the cross. And the ego must be on the cross. And we have to lose our lives for Jesus' sake. Then we will win it. If the ego is on the throne, then it goes very badly. One thing that the ego always gives me is self-pity. Do you know that? Oh, and self-pity. I am so terribly stupid. Then, you know, one often asks me, is it not difficult for you to always travel? I have been traveling for 14 years. And I have been young for a long time. And my friends of my age have a completely different life than me. Much easier. Much easier. But my life is much richer. Because I travel the world with the book in my hand. The wonderful book. It almost bursts with good revelations. 17,000 revelations. And in this book, I can tell everyone all over the world who wants to hear it. Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. And God wants to help everyone. So it is a very rich life. But from time to time, the devil says to me, poor Corrie. Do you always have to travel? Today he was back again. And the self-pity came into my heart. Oh, and it was so terribly warm, so hot in Austria. And I was so terribly thirsty. And I was so happy when I finally came to my room. And there she brought me a whole pot with tea. Oh, that's so wonderful. And I thought, now I can drink tea. And there it was. Peppermint tea. Now they say that it is so terribly healthy. But I think I'd rather be sick than drink peppermint tea. Then the self-pity came and I said, oh, poor Corrie. It's terrible. Yes, then I said, oh Father, forgive me in the name of Jesus, my self-pity. And then he forgave me. And then he said, that's wonderful, when you bring a small or a big sin to the Lord. Then you have forgiveness and the blood of Jesus makes us clean of all sins. We also need the blood of Jesus for the little decent sins. And I was really, I was ashamed. But I had forgiveness and I was hoping to find the tea very tasty. But I didn't have much success. And one minute later, my dear sister came and brought me real black tea. And not too soft, but real black tea. Yes, then I was very happy. And I was so happy that I had already brought this sin to the Lord. It was just as if the Lord said, now Corrie, I have forgiven you. And now you will also get your good tea. Yes, friends, we must understand that the unspeakable and wonderful riches are not only for the great crises of your life, of our lives, but also for the little crises. And a man in Germany once told me, he had a very big business, a shopping business, and it was before Christmas. And he said, oh, I have so much to do. I don't know how to get through the day. I have so many difficulties with my employees. And I said to him, how wonderful that you don't need to do this alone. I knew that he was a child of God. Yes, he said, what do you mean? He said, which friend is our Jesus? Yes, he said, do you really think that I have time to think of Jesus when I am so busy? He said, oh, man, you are just like a mountain climber who has to climb a terribly heavy mountain. And the mountain guide says, well, man, give me your hand now. Now I want to help you. And he says, yes, mountain guide, don't you see how difficult this mountain is to climb? Do you really think that I have time for a mountain guide now? Yes, we are so stupid. Luther said, when I have a lot to do, I have to pray for two hours instead of one hour. Yes, we need the Lord every moment and especially in the crisis of everyday life. And there is never a problem too big for God's almighty and never a problem too small for his love. Yes, we are very rich. And the unspeakable joy and wealth is 24 hours of the day for us. But we have to learn to deposit our checks. I don't know if that's German. Do you know the moment that you are born into the family of God? All 17,000 checks are written in your name and signed by the Lord Jesus. And now you have to use the checks too. I like to pray with an open Bible and say, Father, you said it, now you have to do it too. And God likes that. Because he really meant business with his promises. And he likes it when we really mean business with his riches. God is not at all satisfied with his children who live like beggars. He likes it when we go through life as royal children. Oh, we pray and we liturgize and we sing ourselves so often into poverty. There is a love, a little sentimental song that is, I need you. Oh, I need you. Every moment I need you all the time. Instead of us cheering, praise the Lord, I have you. Yes, I have you. Every moment I have him. That is true. Jesus said, see, I am with you every day until the end of the world. And then we don't have to say, I need you. Thank you, Lord, that I have you. That is reality. Let us grasp reality from the word life. You know, these riches, that is not a question of feeling. Not even of experience. You don't have to recognize your wealth by your experiences. But you have to bring it out of the word. Bring your experiences to the height of the word of God by being obedient and grateful to read the Bible. I was in New Zealand and I worked there with a team of Dr. Edwin Orr. We were four evangelists, but there was so much work to do that we all had our own villages and cities. One week I was alone in Thames. A week after that I could take a vacation. But Edwin Orr wrote, Corrie, there is an awakening here in Dalgeville. And I have to go to another city on Monday. But the people want to hear more. Don't you want to come here? You have to speak in Thames on Sunday. Come here on Monday. So I took my vacation. But I was very happy to hear that there was an awakening there. So I tried to find out how I could get there. But then I heard that it would take me nine hours by car. And the roads are like that, with a lot of curves. I think they are called rainbow roads here. Nine hours by car makes me tired. I thought, what do I have to do? When I arrived there, there was a church where people were awakened. Awakened people always want to receive a lot. They are hungry for a strong message. And then to speak to a great, world-famous preacher like Dr. Edwin Orr. It is not so easy to govern after Napoleon. I thought I had to have a conversation with my father in heaven. He said, Heavenly Father, you know that I am not so young anymore. And you know that I am always very tired when I have been driving for a long time. And now I have to be there on Monday evening in Dargaville. I think you have to give me a plane. Then I will not be so tired. In the evening a man comes to me and says, Is it true, Mr. Bohm, that you have to speak Monday in Dargaville? I said, yes, that's true. Yes, how do you get there? He said, by plane. I said, there is an airline to Dargaville. He said, yes, I know. But our problems are meant by God as material for his miracles. And if we need a great miracle, then we have to submit our impossibilities to God. He said, that's interesting. I work in a company where we spread fertilizers. And now the fields in New Zealand are so huge, that you do that with small planes. And he said, my boss is a Christian. And he said, you have to find out if it is true that you have to be on Monday in Dargaville. And if it is true, then you can use one of our planes. I said, thank you, Father. Yes, he said, but my boss also said, if I wanted to tell you that the pilot has fallen back. He was a Christian, but now he doesn't want to believe anymore. And he is concerned about his soul. And he is now praying, if the Lord wants to use you to bring this man back to Lord Jesus. Yes, that was really New Zealand way. In New Zealand you organize conversions, I have often said. There you bring me together in a room with a drinker and in the church or in another house or in another room, then you are on your knees and pray, oh Lord, use me to convert this man. I like to do it. When people pray, then the enemy can't do much. So I knew what to do when I got on the smallest plane I've ever seen in my life. I was sitting very close to the pilot and in my hand I had my book. That was good, because there was no room to get it out of my pocket. Yes, the first thing that happened was not very encouraging. The pilot had things in his ears. I said, Father, this is so often when I want to talk about you, people have things in their ears, they don't want to hear. I started talking to him. He said, what do you say? I spoke a little quieter. I said, I can't understand you. And he took the things out of his ears. I can't understand what you say. He said, no wonder if you have the stupid things in your ears. Why do you do that? He said, that's the noise of the machine. But now, don't stop talking and I had a real conversation with him. He didn't put the things back in his ears happily. He told me about his reasons. He said, oh, why did my wife have to die? I have four little children. Why didn't God heal them? I can't live without them. Yes, I used to believe in a God, but now I have thrown all my faith overboard. I don't want to believe anymore. Why? Yes, he still has more problems. And then I told him about my reasons. I said, why did my father have to die in prison? After ten days that he came to prison, he died. He was 84 years old. All his children were in the same prison. Three daughters, a son and a grandson. And many friends. But the enemy didn't leave us with him. Why did my sister Betsy have to die in prison and concentration camp after ten months of terrible suffering? Die in prison and concentration camp. One week before I was released. Yes, there are many reasons in my life, but I have a book. And in this book is the answer to our reasons. He said, in this book we can read that God has a plan for our lives. No problems. I showed him a piece of work and told him a little poem, a little like this in German, Life is a piece of time where thread rides on thread. The threads run cross and cross. You don't see a right pattern anymore. But we will understand it roughly when we see the right side. One day we will recognize in light what was dark here on earth. Call it wonderful and holy what happened to us here on earth. Then we will see full price and thanks the sending in connection. And all the time we see the wrong side, God sees his side. And God has no problems with our lives, only plans. There is no panic in heaven. And then I opened my Bible and I showed him different texts. Such words as those whom God loves work best with me. And the suffering of this time cannot be compared with the glory that will come. Now the good thing was, he could not run away. He had to read what was in front of his nose. At the end he said, It is very beautiful in the book. But I don't feel that it is true. Then he said, Can I interrupt our conversation for a moment? We are now going with the plane into that cloud there. And when we are in the cloud then you will have the feeling that we are heading to one side. But you don't have to be afraid because I will hold the plane absolutely upright. So you have to look at this instrument. And when the pointer goes up, points to the zero, then you can know that the plane is upright. Even if you have the feeling that you are going to one side. I said, Man, this is the best illustration you can give me. Feelings come and go. But the word of God stays forever. This is my instrument. When I fly my life pilot to this Bible, then my life is upright. And I am so glad that I was able to bring this man to Jesus for a new year. Yes, God knows his flock of believers who do not look, but who trust in the invisible, who are witnessed by the word, who come near by the word, who bow before the word, who come near by the word. In this book is the answer to your problems. And therefore there is no more important book in the whole world than the Bible. This is a love letter of God for every man who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ. So often people come to me who do not believe and say, Oh, the Bible, that's also a book. You can't understand that. I say, No. In the world it is so. First you have to see something and then you believe it. With the things of God it is You have to believe first and then you see it. You don't have to think that I understand everything in the Bible. Oh, I don't understand that much. But it wasn't your Luther who said, If I don't understand something in the Bible, then I take off my hat and then I go on. I always say, I hang it on a hook. And later I read something about it again and then I take it off the hook again. And then you can also enjoy the Bible if you don't understand it yet. Well, yes, this book. That makes us rich. And we can know our wealth because we not only have the book, but also because the Lord gave us the Holy Spirit. We don't have a spirit from the world, but a spirit from God, so that we can know what is given to us by God. The Holy Spirit makes us get enlightened eyes. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes for the life of overflow. The Holy Spirit makes us understand this book. That is why it is so important that before you read the Bible, we always pray, Lord, enlighten my soul, the eyes of my soul, through your Holy Spirit. And then it's wonderful how the book gets richer and richer. If you read a book for the tenth time, then you think at the end, well, now I have enough of it, give me another book now. When I was in solitary confinement for four months, I often got one book in two weeks. Then I read the book ten times, because I had nothing, nothing, nothing else to do. But now it is so very special about this book that the more we read about it, the more beautiful it becomes. But this is only possible when we give room to the Holy Spirit. And now we will hear about it this week. The Holy Spirit has been given to us and the Holy Spirit wants to show us how rich we are. Pray that we get a new layer. On the wealth of the children of God. And when we are rich, then we also have a message for the world. Children of God with long faces have no message for the world. Children of God must have round faces. And I hope and pray that the Lord will make many of the long faces around this week. Through his Holy Spirit. You know, tomorrow I will tell about a palace of wealth. And in the palace there are different rooms. And I will only tell about one room tonight as a conclusion. And that is a room of peace of heart. My youngest sister, Nolly, a mother of six children, was the first in our family who was arrested. Two Jews were found in her house. When I heard that she had been brought to a police station, I ran there. And I saw her coming from the door to the prison car. And I put my arms around her. I did not pay attention to the policemen who stood around and wanted to keep me away. I had to hold her in my arms again. And I was very, very sad. She was the first in the family who came in contact with the police. And when Nolly saw my sad face, she said, Corrie, God is love. I could not understand that. She would have said, Corrie, can you believe that God is love? That he allowed the enemy to bring me here? Yes, then I would have understood her. But no, no, she did not say that. She said, God is love. And she smiled. And in the prison car she wrote on the wall three words, Jesus is the victor. And when she came to prison, there were five women in the cell. And I asked her, don't you cry? We all cry when we go to prison But Nolly said, no, I don't cry. God makes no mistake that he allowed the enemy to bring me here. Do you see the visible reality that she, a mother of six children, was brought to a prison where very few came out alive. The invisible reality was that Jesus is the victor, that God is love, and that he never makes a mistake. And she was in this room, peace of heart. And there you see the things from God's point of view. And then you can say, even if it is very dark, my God's ways seem strange to me, puzzling and difficult. And if the wishes I have often come from sorrow, want to destroy the day that only brought me pain and suffering, then I will focus on one thing, that God never makes a mistake. When, about unresolved questions, my heart is filled with despair, in the love of God we despair, because the misunderstanding arises, then I want to lay all my tired souls in God's hands, and weep these words, that God never makes a mistake. So be quiet, my heart, and forget what earthly and past is. In the light of God you will see that God shows you the way. And did you have to miss your beloved? Yes, it went through darkness, but our dark night holds fast to this soul of knowledge, that God never makes a mistake, we pray. Thank you, Father, in the name of Jesus, for your book, the Bible. Thank you that you have shown us in the book, your side of the stitchwork of our life. Thank you that you have given us the Holy Spirit, so that we understand what has been given to us from you. Thank you that this week you will give us a new layer on our wealth. Hallelujah. Amen. If you want, you will enter your name under the threshold. If there is no paper on the book table, then you write it down somewhere and give the paper. You know, I can only be brief here, and I will then through my letter, which is called Hello Friends, if you want to have this, then you have to give your name, and then the only thing I expect from you is to pray for me from time to time when the Lord tells you.
