George Verwer

George Verwer (1938 - 2023). American evangelist and founder of Operation Mobilisation (OM), born in Ramsey, New Jersey, to Dutch immigrant parents. At 14, Dorothea Clapp gave him a Gospel of John and prayed for his conversion, which occurred at 16 during a 1955 Billy Graham rally in New York. As student council president, he distributed 1,000 Gospels, leading 200 classmates to faith. In 1957, while at Maryville College, he and two friends sold possessions to fund a Mexico mission trip, distributing 20,000 Spanish tracts. At Moody Bible Institute, he met Drena Knecht, marrying her in 1960; they had three children. In 1961, after smuggling Bibles into the USSR and being deported, he founded OM in Spain, growing it to 6,100 workers across 110 nations by 2003, with ships like Logos distributing 70 million Scriptures. Verwer authored books like Out of the Comfort Zone, spoke globally, and pioneered short-term missions. He led OM until 2003, then focused on special projects in England. His world-map jacket and inflatable globe symbolized his passion for unreached peoples.

Sermon Transcription
I believe that here in Mexico, you are going to have an exhibition on the assassination of Spanish grammar. I hardly have the opportunity to speak Spanish in the last 20 years, but I feel that I should try to speak Spanish, and my friend may be able to help me a little. My heart is very, very full. I have just returned from Pakistan, North Africa, Syria, Jordan, Arabia, and other countries where there are millions and millions of people who have not heard the blessed name of Jesus even once. I cannot explain the burden that is in my heart this morning. In this country of two million evangelicals, more than two million evangelicals, I have just come from the city of Mexico where we have a thousand temples, a thousand churches, if we also talk about the churches at home, there are many, of different types of churches, and we have this great burden. I cannot express it very well, to see the Church of Mexico taking its part in sending workers to other parts of the world. I thank God for the privilege of being here in Veracruz. I was here in this city until I was 24 years old to open a bookstore. I don't know if some of you remember that bookstore. 23 years ago, Vida Nueva bookstore. I was here for a while, and I'm sure there are other bookstores now. I can remember my time here in Veracruz very well because there was a very big color in May here in this great city. And I thank God for each one of you, each church. And we are not here in Mexico primarily to teach. We are here to learn. This is not a missionary boat. It is a boat of men and women who want to learn from other countries, from other cultures. And when we leave here, we want to have more vision to pray for each one of you and for the Church here in Mexico. And at the same time, we do have a vision. I'm sure some of you, men and women of God, already have this vision. And if you already have this vision, you don't have to listen so much now. You can pray or read your Bible or learn some verses by heart. But the vision that we have is a vision that we have found here in the New Testament. And we are going to dedicate our time until now to look at some verses in the Word of God. My Spanish is not very good and I cannot communicate very well. But the Word of God, written here in Spanish, can communicate very strongly to our hearts. And we do not have or do not want the philosophies of men. We want to hear the voice of God. We want to open our hearts and receive the message that the Holy Spirit wants to bring to each one of us. I thank God, brothers and sisters, for the books that we have here on the boat. I believe that it is a service to the evangelical people to bring these important books. And I hope that you can take these books and read them and put into practice the message that we can find in these books. I have chosen four books. Actually, three. One is a book that I have written. It is not a very big, very important book. But it is a message that is in my heart. A revolution of love and balance. I have a great desire to talk about this subject. How to maintain spiritual balance. Very important. Because when we are very dedicated to the Lord, and full of the Holy Spirit, and we want to make a great war against the enemy of our soul, the devil, the evil one, then the enemy wants to destroy our life. And a way in which the devil has destroyed many, here in Mexico itself, is through extremism. Extremism. And it is important to understand this subject. Spiritual balance. And here is something about this subject in this book. Three more important books. One, disciplined life. Disciplined life. Billy Graham has said, if we do not have discipline, despite any other thing that we may have, in reality we are not going to do much for the Lord Jesus Christ. Is that true? I think so. And here is a very important book. Disciplined life. How to have control over oneself. Over the tongue. The eyes. And for this reason, to live a life of many years for the Lord. Very important. We have seen in other countries, some people who run well one year, two years, and then nothing. And our desire is to see leaders, Christian leaders, who are going to live a life for all their lives for the Lord Jesus Christ. There are two other very important books. Errors and sexual sin. Probably, in some countries, I do not know as much as Mexico or about Mexico, but in many countries, the number one problem is sexual sin. And in some countries and churches, we do not want to talk about this topic. There are more than 400 verses in the word of God on this topic. More than 400 verses in the word of God. But we are not going to say anything. And I think that every pastor here must have 10 messages about sex. For the youth. How to win victory. How to receive forgiveness. How to develop a disciplined life. And how to stop the darts of fire that the enemy is going to shoot at each believer, especially the leaders. A very important book. And then, how to share your faith. This brother, a friend, died a few years ago in a car crash. A big thing. But thank God, his book lives. How to share your faith. It is a book for the members of your church. You should not think about taking two or three or four books. You should think about taking a quantity of books and selling them to your members or giving them away. Because they are very important books. How to share your faith. Glory to God for the power of literature. I have written a book about literature. I have not seen it in the library, but it is probably in the exhibition up there. It is called, The 29 Soldiers of Lead. About how the Holy Spirit can use literature to win souls. Do you know where I learned to sell books? More than anywhere else here in Mexico. I was not here in Mexico for 19 years. In Monterrey and Mexico City. In two years, in response to prayer, we have opened eight bookstores. One here in Veracruz. And I could see, in those days, how to win souls. Using literature. Using correspondence courses. Distributing leaflets. We have had the pleasure of distributing 5, 7, 8, 9 million leaflets in Mexico. And there are people in every part of Mexico who have received the Lord Jesus Christ because of these leaflets. The word of God, as it says in the Bible, is strong. It is like a two-edged sword. And we must use this great sword. Let's look at some verses in the word of God. Romans 12. Romans 12. Let's see how many people here have their Bibles. Let's see their Bibles, please. Glory to God. Glory to God. If you don't have a Bible, you must get one. Because here we are to study. And to see what the word of God says. Let's pray. Let's pray. Everyone. Holy Father, we thank you for your mercy. The power of your Holy Spirit. The reality of your presence. Lord, help me with my poor Spanish. To express what you are putting in my heart. Help us not to listen too much to the grammar. But to listen to your voice. And to receive everything you want to give us this morning. Oh Lord, break us. Teach us more of your word. Teach us more of the reality of the spiritual war we are in. So that we can return to our towns. So that we can return to our churches. And see a great revival that can capture the mind of all of Mexico. Lord, help us. To be humble of heart. And receive what you want to receive. What you want to give us. In the name of Christ Jesus. Amen. Romans 12. Two verses. So brothers. Verse 1. I pray you for the mercy of God. That you present your bodies in sacrifice. Living, holy, pleasant to God. That it is your rational worship. Do not conform to this century. But transform through the renewal of your understanding. So that you can verify what is the good will of God. Pleasant and perfect. If we want to be the leaders. The type of leader that the Lord can use. If we want to see revival in our churches. If we want to evangelize the world. If we want to have reality in our homes. A very important thing. And glory to God for some books here. About the home. I have one wife. And three children. Well, two children. And a daughter. One is 21 years old. I started her life in Mexico. But now she was born in Spain. And another son was born in England. And a daughter was also born in England. And I believe that one of the greatest responsibilities for the man of God. Is his home. And sometimes it is much more difficult to guide our home. Than to guide the whole church. There are 1,600 people in Operation Mobilization. 1,600. 25 years ago. Arriving in Mexico City. Three of us. With a lot of fear. Ignorant. Young. With some phrases in Spanish. But with hearts full of God's fire. And the Lord has given his mercy to us these 25 years. In a way that I cannot explain. Because our God knows how to answer our prayers. And because our Lord knows how to use weak people. And you are looking at a very weak person right now. And when we see what the Lord has done for the whole world. Operation Mobilization. We have to confess that we have a God. Who specializes in miracles. In miracles. But if we are winning souls. And evangelizing the world. Helping people in our churches. Not only preaching. But helping. The Ministry of Compassion. The Pastoral Ministry. Is there a word? Pastoral? Then we have to have this reality in our lives. We have to have the reality every day. That we are going to have by presenting our bodies. In sacrifice. Alive. Holy. Pleasant to God. That is our rational worship. A complete dedication. A complete surrender. Complete to the Lord Jesus Christ. It is absolutely necessary. To be a man and woman of God. I am almost 24 years old. 26 years old. I was converted in the year 55. By the ministry of Billy Graham. Maybe I could explain a little bit about. How my conversion to Christ has happened. To maybe help understand. The burden that is in my heart this morning. I was not from an evangelical family. I did not know almost anything about the word of God. I was well into the world at 16 years old. Earning money. I had three small businesses. Living near New York. Deceiving people. And doing many things. I do not want to mention them. Lost. Slave of sin. It says in John. The Gospel of John. When we sin. We commit sin. So. Sooner or later. We are going to be slaves of sin. Thank God. Thank God for a miracle. A woman of prayer. A woman of prayer. In Iraq for me. This woman was. Praying for the high school where I was. For 15 years. And we have to remember these days. Brothers and sisters. That our great weapon. Weapon. Is prayer. Prayer. And a woman. Be Mexican, American, English. A woman of prayer can move the world for Christ. And it is needed today. More women. More men of prayer. Many churches now in America. So sad the churches. Many there. They do not have worship. They do not have worship in the church. And then. They have questions. Why so many pastors have fallen. In impurity. And divorce. And almost. Almost. Any problem we can mention. Without prayer. We can not do the work of God. Without prayer. Without prayer. We can not evangelize the world. Without prayer. We can not have a healthy church. Without prayer. We can not have a happy home. With spiritual balance. With reality. Where children. And children. And daughters. They are receiving the word of God. I think. I have to thank every week. For this woman. I was praying for me. She also sent me a gospel of John. By mail. The word of God. I hope that each of you. Is distributing gospels of John. For brochures. Sending them by mail. Giving them in the buses. The Lord wants to use his word. But he can not use the Bible. And new testaments and gospels. That are still there. In the Bible society. Or in a winery. We have to distribute the word of God. Freely. With faith. Because the Lord wants to use his word. And this woman has sent me a gospel of John. In the middle of. I was reading pornography. How do you say? And other books. And my mind is deceived. The word of God has entered my heart. Like an atomic bomb. And I had to read that book every day. Every day. For two years. Because I was a hard man. Like a donkey. Because my father was from Holland. An atheist from Holland. My father. No. Not his father. An atheist. My father also from Holland. A journalist. My other grandfather. A drunkard. From Scotland. I am an international man. I do not know where he comes from. Where am I going? Only to heaven. And my father and my mother. Well, there were no bad people. I thank God for them. But they did not have personal knowledge of our God. And they could not then teach me. Of the new birth. Of the power of the blood of Christ. The reality of the Holy Spirit. And so I was very lost. But thank God for the prayers of that woman. And her word could begin to see the light. By a miracle of God. Billy Graham was in the city of New York one night. Billy Graham. He is a man. We should not give honor to men in a sense. They are instruments. Like a microphone. But I went to hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. There in Madison Square Garden. They always have. How do you say? Huxing. I think half of them here speak English. At least some important words. And there I could hear the gospel. How Christ died on the cross for my sins. And by a miracle. A shameless like me. A weak, ignorant, proud. I could receive Christ as my Lord and my Savior. And receive forgiveness for my sins. I cannot explain to this day. How the Lord could change my life. And clean me. And give me strength. To gain victory over impurity. Over lies. And all kinds of sin. That has captured my life. And was destroying my life. We are going to give thanks every day to our Lord. For this great salvation. I don't understand. I don't understand. Some people sitting there in the church. Sunday morning. With a face. Like a bottle of tomato sauce. I cannot explain that in Spanish. A sad face. Sometimes singing hymns. In Spain. I remember in a church. Some people well asleep in the church. Singing. We are a small town. Very happy. We are a small town. Very happy. We are a small town. Very happy. Maybe it's not like that here in Veracruz. I hope that all the saints are enjoying salvation. At least you are. We are going to look at another very important verse. In Galatians. Or Galatians. How is it? Well, let's find it in the Bible. To find things in my Bible. In Spanish. It's not that easy. Galatians. Galatians. Chapter 5. Verse 22. Galatians 5.22. Casi no he comprado ropa yo en 25 años. Ayer he visto esas montañas. Vamos a ver Efecios. No creemos exactamente igual. Diferentes personas dan diferentes nombres a esa crisis. Y hoy. Hoy. Estas lleno hoy con el Espiritu Santo. Estas experimentando el fruto hoy. En su lugar, en su ministerio. Es otra cosa. Yo tenia que. De vez en cuando. Go a little slower. Un poco mas lento mi vida. Para aprender mas. De nuestro Dios. Y ser cada dia. Lleno. Del Espiritu Santo. Hechos 1-8. Hechos 1-8. 1-8. Aqui hablamos otra vez del Espiritu Santo. Muy importante. Pero recibirez poder. Versiculo 8. Yo creo. Que cuando el Espiritu Santo. Esta. Obrando en nuestras vidas. Entonces vamos a tener. Vision por todo el mundo. Y vamos a tambien. Obedecer a nuestro Dios. Y llevar el Evangelio. A todo el mundo. Vamos a ver dos otras referencias. Muy importantes. Segundo de Corintios. Diez. Dieciséis. Segundo de Corintios. Diez. No. Si. Diez. Y dieciséis. Muy importante. Segundo de Corintios. Diez. Dieciséis. 15, 20. The same vision, the vision of Paul. And I believe that the vision of Paul must be our vision. Our vision is not a Mexican, or American, or European vision. It is a New Testament vision. It is an apostolic vision. The vision of reaching the world with the Gospel. See Romans 15, 20. And in this way, I strive to preach the Gospel. Verse 20 in Romans 15. To preach the Gospel from where Christ had already been named, so as not to build upon the foundation of others. The Holy Spirit, by revelation, wants to give, this same day, more vision of the last parts of the earth. And also, the part that the Church in Mexico must take. Sunday night I was preaching in the Baptist Church on Mina Street. Almost the largest in Mexico. I have given the Christian leaders there, and some more that were there with us, the message, in Spanish, for my brother here, easier to understand. The strongest message I have given in Mexico for 25 years. The Lord has given us a vision, and Sunday night we have broken this vision with all our hearts. And this vision includes the need for the Church in Mexico to send workers to other parts of the world. We have some very false ideas in our minds here in Mexico. Not all, some. Because we have received a lot in the past years, not so much now, but in the past years we have received a lot. Bibles, literature, missionaries from other countries. England, some very strong missionaries from England have arrived here. Maybe people forget these things. I remember that man, Mr. Ingram, in Mexico City, 70 years ago, working, working. It's a miracle, this man. And others, others. Now the Church in Mexico has arrived to adult-ship. Say it here, it's a very important phrase. It has arrived to adult-ship. She doesn't have to think only about receiving missionaries, or more Bibles, or things, but she has to think about what she can give. What she can give. And especially men and women, full of the Holy Spirit, crucified with Christ, and ready to work. Now we're not going to do this overnight, but we have to start. And there are churches here, that could send at least one. One! I'm not asking for much. Look at your Bible, very quickly, because time is almost passing. Matthew 9, very important, St. Matthew 9. I wanted to say that if there are some who want this tape, that we have in Mexico. No, we don't have it here, and we're not going to have it for a week. But if you want that tape, the message of this vision that has been given, in the Church of Mina, we're ready to send the tape. But you have to give your name and address, and you can explain how they can do that. St. Matthew, chapter 9, the last verses. Then he said to his disciples, the truth is that there are many, but the workers are few. And now I can also say, few. And many times there are no Mexicans. Because there are almost no Mexicans, working in other parts of the world. There are some, yes, in the United States, that's fine. That's fine. I'm not going to talk about that. And some, very few, have gone to Spain. Glory to God! I don't despise anything that the Church has done. But until now, the vision to vandalize the world with Mexicans, is not there. Very few. I don't know how they pray here, with this passage, where he says, then he said to his disciples, the truth is that there are many, but the workers are few. Pray, then, to the Lord of the workers, that he send workers to his workers. How do we obey this verse here in Veracruz, in Mexico? When we have a worship cult, when we are obeying the word of God, as Jesus teaches here. Then, in obeying the Lord, we have to pray, we have to pray, that the Lord of the workers, send workers to his workers. How do we pray? Oh my Lord, the workers are many, workers are needed. I ask in your name, send more workers from New York, to evangelize the world. I ask in your name, Lord, send more from Argentina, or send more from England. How? It's nonsense. We have to pray, brothers, we have to pray, Oh Lord, we ask in your name, send Mexicans, send people from our church. And it is the responsibility of the pastors, and pastors, brothers, the blood of this world is in their hands. Because there is nothing in the word of God to evangelize Mexico. There is only to evangelize the world. You have done a great job in Mexico. There are two million evangelists, and I know that there is much more need still, for sure, for sure. But at least we can think of sending some. I'm not even talking about Operation Mobilization, because we don't believe that we are the organization to take 100 Mexicans to other parts of the world. But there are other organizations, and there are churches, and there is a revolution in the missions these days. I'm not talking about myself. There are many leaders, including leaders of the church, who believe that the hour has already passed. It has already passed. And we have to repent, and begin to obey the word of God, by saving, by fasting, by working, to send Mexican workers to Spain, to the Arab world, where there is almost no testimony. Thank God there is a Mexican there now, Pablo Carrillo, working in the Arab world. Let's pray for him, because he is almost the only Mexican working in the Muslim world. One in every five people in the world is a Muslim. One in every five. And less than 2%, less than 2% are working among themselves. There are more foreigners working in Central America, in Mexico, than there are workers working all over the Muslim world. All over the Muslim world. 900 million inhabitants. One in every five in the world. How many churches are saving for the Muslim world? How many are taking books, like the book of prayer, about the whole world, using it for prayer, and believing that, like in the New Testament, some workers can leave their churches. I cannot explain well the vision that is in my heart. I have to ask for your forgiveness if I have not explained well. I have to ask for your forgiveness.
